In 2024, the most reliable way to get “sender-sorted” behavior is to use the built-in sort control when it exists, or fall back to search queries and sender-based filters.
This guide covers the full set of practical methods that work across the Yahoo Mail web interface and the iPhone/iPad and Android apps, with concrete steps and troubleshooting for when the UI you see doesn’t match screenshots you’ve found online.

What Sorting by Sender Means in Yahoo Mail
When people say “sort by sender,” they usually mean one of these outcomes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- A visual ordering of messages in the inbox list where senders are grouped or sorted alphabetically.
- Focusing results so only messages from a specific sender (or domain) are shown, ordered by date.
- Automatic organization where mail from certain senders goes to a folder/label so it’s effectively grouped over time.
Yahoo Mail’s UI may support the first option in some views, but the second and third options are consistent even when the “sort by sender” control isn’t present.

Prerequisites and Where Yahoo UI Can Differ (2024)
Before you change anything, confirm two things: which platform you’re using (web, iOS, or Android) and which Yahoo Mail view you’re in (Inbox, All Mail, a folder, or search results).
- Web: Use a current desktop browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox). Yahoo’s list header controls can change depending on the layout.
- iPhone/iPad (iOS): The mobile app usually emphasizes search and conversation views rather than advanced sort.
- Android: Similar constraints to iOS—search-driven sender filtering is the most dependable approach.
If you don’t see a specific control, use the next method in this guide instead of forcing it. That’s not you doing it wrong—Yahoo’s interface can vary by account type and rollout.
Method 1 (Web): Use the Inbox List Sort Control
On the Yahoo Mail web inbox list, you may see a sort drop-down or sort icons in the message header area. If you do, this is the fastest route to a sender-based ordering.
- Go to mail.yahoo.com and sign in.
- Open Inbox (or another mailbox view like All Mail if that’s where your messages are).
- Look above the message list for a Sort control or a drop-down labeled Sort / Order.
- Choose Sender if it appears as an option.
- If you see From instead of Sender, select that.
- Confirm the list re-orders. If the change is subtle, switch the view to a different folder (like All Mail) and try again.
What to expect: If “Sender” is offered, Yahoo typically orders by sender name (A–Z) or groups senders. Some accounts only offer sorting by Date, Unread, or Subject, not sender.
Method 2 (Web): Sort via Search Results (from: queries)
Even when a sender sort option is missing, you can get “sender-sorted” results by narrowing the mailbox to a specific sender using the search bar, then ordering by date (or whatever sorting the results list supports).
Yahoo search supports queries similar to email search operators. The most useful pattern is from:.
- Open Yahoo Mail on the web and go to your mailbox (usually Inbox).
- Click the Search mail box.
- Enter one of these formats:
from:[email protected]from:john(works best if the sender name is unique)from:@example.com(if available in your account; otherwise usefrom:example.com)
- Press Enter.
- On the results list, use any available sort control (commonly sorting by Date or Relevance). If you can’t sort inside results, it usually still shows messages in a consistent order (often newest first).
- Repeat with different senders to simulate a sender-sorted inbox.
Practical approach: If your goal is to review one sender, search-based “sender grouping” is more actionable than alphabetical sender sorting. It also avoids mixing newsletters, receipts, and personal mail.

Method 3 (Web): Create Filters to Group by Sender Automatically
If you want consistent organization (messages from specific senders always end up in a dedicated place), filters are the durable solution. Sorting is temporary; filters change where messages go.
On the Yahoo Mail web interface, filters are usually configured under settings.
- Open Yahoo Mail on the web.
- Click Settings (gear icon).
- Select More settings (or Settings → Mailboxes depending on your UI).
- Find and open Filters (sometimes shown as Filters and Blocked Addresses).
- Choose Add new filter or Create.
- Set the condition to match a sender. Use fields like:
- From contains
[email protected] - Or From includes the sender name
- From contains
- Create or select a destination folder/label (for example, Important, Receipts, or a new folder like Work – John).
- Save the filter.
- Optionally, apply it to existing mail if the UI offers an “apply to existing messages” checkbox.
Result: Instead of sorting the inbox every time, you build sender-based buckets and let Yahoo’s filter engine keep them organized.
Method 4 (Web): Use Saved Search / Folder Views When Available
Some Yahoo Mail layouts allow you to save searches or quickly access recent searches. While it’s not always a formal “sort by sender,” it gives you repeatable sender views.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Run a sender query like
from:[email protected]. - Check whether Yahoo shows a way to save the search or keep it in a recent list.
- Pin or bookmark the results (browser bookmark is fine if Yahoo can’t save it).
If saving isn’t available in your interface, bookmarking the web results page can still be a practical workaround for recurring sender checks.
Method 1 (iPhone/iPad): Find Messages from a Sender and Reorder Results
On iOS, Yahoo Mail typically doesn’t expose a full “sort by sender” control in the inbox list. The reliable method is to filter by sender using search, then use the results order (often newest-first).
- Open the Yahoo Mail app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Search field at the top.
- Enter the sender search, for example
from:[email protected](or the sender name if from: isn’t supported in your version). - Tap Search.
- If there’s a sort or filter control in the results screen, choose the available ordering (often Date or Newest).
Method 2 (iOS): Use Yahoo Mail Search Operators (from:)
If from: works on your device, it’s the most consistent way to target a sender from anywhere in Yahoo Mail.

- Open Yahoo Mail app.
- Tap the search box.
- Try one of these:

If from: doesn’t return results on your mobile app, use the plain-text search (Method 1 fallback): type the exact sender email address or the sender name as shown in the From line.
Method 3 (iOS): Create Filters or Use Folder Moves (App vs Web)
Sender-based filters are usually easier to set up on the web interface because the settings UI is broader and more configurable.
- Create filters on the Yahoo Mail web version (follow the Method 3 (Web) steps).
- On iOS, verify the results by checking the destination folder.
- After filters are in place, you won’t need “sort by sender” frequently—you just open the sender folder/label.
If your iOS app offers a filters screen (some accounts do, some don’t), look under Menu (☰) → Settings → Filters.
Method 1 (Android): Find Messages from a Sender and Reorder Results
Android behaves similarly to iOS: sorting by sender directly is often limited, but sender search is dependable.
- Open the Yahoo Mail app on Android.
- Tap the Search bar.
- Type the sender query (prefer the address format like
from:[email protected]). - Tap Search to view results.
- If the results screen offers ordering, select the option that keeps the list in a consistent order (commonly newest first by date).
This gives you a “sender view” even if the inbox itself can’t be sorted alphabetically by From name.
Method 2 (Android): Use Yahoo Mail Search Operators (from:)
When from: works, it’s your best friend for sender-specific organization.
- Tap the search field.
- Try one query:
from:example.comfrom:[email protected]from:newsletter@(only works if your app supports partial patterns)
If you get zero results, switch to plain-text: enter the sender email address exactly as it appears in the From field of a message.

Method 3 (Android): Filters and Auto-Organizing (Best Done on Web)
Because the web interface typically provides the cleanest filter-builder experience, set sender filters on the desktop and let them do the heavy lifting.
- Create filters on the Yahoo Mail web site (see Method 3 (Web)).
- On Android, open the destination folder/label to confirm messages land there.
- Fine-tune filters if you see misclassification (adjust the From match to use email address instead of only a display name).
Troubleshooting When You Can’t Find a Sender Sort Option
If you expected a “Sort by Sender” option and can’t find it, don’t waste time clicking around randomly. Use these checks in order.
1) You might be in the wrong view
Try switching between Inbox and All Mail. Some list controls appear only in specific views.
2) Sender sort may not be available for your account
Yahoo has rolled out UI variants over time. If “Sender” isn’t in the sort drop-down (or there’s no sort drop-down at all), use search results (Method 2) or filters (Method 3).
3) Browser extensions or tracking protection can break the UI
Try a different browser profile, disable ad-blocking temporarily, or allow scripts for mail.yahoo.com. If the header controls don’t render, sorting options can disappear.
4) Mobile apps favor search over list-level sorting
On iPhone/iPad and Android, it’s normal to not have advanced sort criteria in the inbox list. Use from: search and sender-based filters.

- Trying to sort instead of filtering: If your goal is long-term organization, filters matter more than sorting.
- Using only a display name: Display names can change or overlap. Prefer the exact sender email address in your filter.
- Assuming all From values match: Some services send from no-reply@ and others from rotating addresses. If the filter doesn’t catch everything, broaden carefully (domain match) or create multiple rules.
- Searching in the wrong scope: If the app supports scoped search (Inbox vs All Mail), be sure you’re searching where the messages actually are.
Comparison: Sorting vs Filtering vs Searching

|---|---|---|
| Instant sender-focused view | Search by sender (from:) |

FAQs
Why can’t I find “Sort by Sender” in my Yahoo Mail inbox?
In many 2024 Yahoo Mail interfaces, sender sorting isn’t offered as a list sort option. If it’s missing, use sender search (from:) or set filters to group messages automatically.

Does Yahoo Mail support from: search on mobile?
Often yes, but not always. If from: doesn’t return results in your iOS or Android app, try searching the exact sender email address or the exact sender name as shown in the From line.
Can I sort all mail by sender without switching folders?
Usually not as a permanent inbox-wide alphabetical sender view. The closest alternatives are: (1) sorting the current list by whatever Yahoo offers, (2) running sender-specific searches, or (3) using filters to route senders into dedicated folders.
How do filters handle newsletters vs personal emails?
Filters match the sender From field. If a newsletter uses multiple senders or rotating addresses, you may need multiple rules (or a domain-based match) to capture everything consistently.
Will filters affect existing messages already in my inbox?
Some filter creation screens offer an option to apply to existing messages. If you don’t see it, you’ll only affect mail that arrives after the filter is saved.
Bottom Line
If you truly have “Sort by Sender” available in your Yahoo Mail web view, use it—it’s the quickest answer. For most accounts and for mobile, the most dependable workflow is sender search with from:, plus sender-based filters created on the web to keep mail automatically grouped.
Use sorting for short-term review, and filters for long-term organization. That combination gives you the “sender-by-sender” experience even when Yahoo’s UI doesn’t offer a single universal sort toggle.
