If Yahoo Mail shows 1 unread message in your inbox but you cannot see one, compare the inbox on desktop and in the mobile app, then use Yahoo’s unread filter to look for a message that is easy to miss. If the count appears only in the app, focus on the app; if it appears on the web too, check other mail apps and devices connected to the account. Yahoo does not document one guaranteed fix for this exact persistent count.
First, check whether the unread count is only in the app
Open Yahoo Mail on a computer and compare it with the phone app. Yahoo recommends checking mail on a computer when troubleshooting mobile mail. If the count appears in both places, it is not limited to the phone app’s display. If it appears only in the app, proceed to the app-specific checks below.

On desktop, open the relevant folder and use Yahoo’s Unread filter to surface messages that are not obvious in the normal list. Yahoo documents this filter for New Yahoo Mail desktop; the interface may not be available in every region. Yahoo’s New Yahoo Mail message-selection help describes the unread selection option.
Check whether another mail app or device is accessing the account
If a message is being retrieved by an external mail program, its read state may differ from what you expect in Yahoo Mail. Yahoo Help says: “An external mail program, such as Outlook or Mac Mail, retrieves messages from Yahoo Mail and downloads them to your computer or mobile device, making them appear as read in Yahoo Mail.” That is a possible clue about account activity, not proof that another app caused a lingering count.

Review mail apps and devices where you have added this Yahoo account, including desktop programs and older phones or tablets. Check their account and POP/IMAP settings if you use them; Yahoo’s client troubleshooting guidance recommends checking connected devices and client configuration. If the count appears only in the Yahoo mobile app
Try Yahoo’s basic app troubleshooting steps: update the app, sign out and back in, and reinstall it if needed. Yahoo lists these steps for certain mobile mail problems, including mail not appearing on a device. Mark a message read only after you locate it
When you find the message, use its read/unread control rather than changing messages at random. Yahoo Mail for Android supports marking messages read or unread with swipe actions and offers bulk actions when you tap and hold a message. The exact controls vary by platform and app version. On iOS, Yahoo’s Revisit feature can surface a recently marked-unread message for some users, but Yahoo says the feature is rolling out in phases. It is not documented as a universal way to fix a persistent inbox count. See Yahoo’s Revisit help page.

When to consider account security
A count of one by itself is not evidence that someone accessed your account. If you have other reason to suspect that your computer is compromised or your account is being accessed remotely, Yahoo recommends scanning the computer for viruses and spyware. Its security guidance is conditional, not a claim that malware commonly causes an unread-count mismatch. Yahoo Help’s guidance on messages showing as read discusses external mail programs and this security consideration.
