It is worth considering if you use Windows and want a guided scene setup; its free plan streams without a watermark up to 720p, while output above 720p is watermarked. Mac users should skip it: XSplit says there is no Mac version planned. OBS Studio is a strong alternative if you need macOS or Linux support or prefer free, open-source software.
What XSplit Broadcaster does
XSplit Broadcaster is a desktop production app for combining media and live inputs into scenes, then streaming to a configured platform or recording locally. A scene is a layout; its sources can include camera feeds, video, gameplay, images, GIFs, webpages, and other media. It is not a cloud service that keeps an uploaded video playing when your computer is off: Broadcaster is software you run on a Windows PC. Your computer and internet connection therefore remain part of a live production workflow.
Does XSplit Broadcaster work on your computer?
Windows requirements
XSplit’s current support page lists Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. It specifies a minimum of 8 GB RAM, a GeForce- or Radeon-class GPU supporting DirectX 10.1 or better, 250 MB of storage, and broadband internet. The page gives 500 kbps upload as the minimum for streaming at the lowest settings and distinguishes CPU recommendations for 720p versus 1080p recording or streaming. These are published baseline requirements, not a guarantee of smooth performance for a particular game, encoder, scene complexity, or output quality. A heavier production can require more capable hardware and upload bandwidth. An older XSplit product-page listing gives different details, including a 5 Mbps HD recommendation; for compatibility, use the current support page rather than treating that older figure as the current minimum.
Mac and Linux
XSplit’s support answer to “Does XSplit Broadcaster work on Mac OS?” is no: Broadcaster is Windows-only, and the company says it has no Mac version planned. OBS Studio is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

What you get, and what the free plan limits
XSplit’s plan comparison identifies limits around scene count, output resolution, watermarks, virtual camera, audio and source transitions, projector, preview, and commercial use. It advertises four scenes on Free and unlimited scenes on Premium. The Free virtual camera includes a watermark; Premium removes it. Premium also lists simultaneous broadcasting to multiple services and commercial use. Confirm the feature comparison for your account and region before buying because plan terms can change.
For the key resolution decision, Free supports streaming up to 720p without a watermark and adds a watermark above 720p. Premium lists unlimited output resolution. If you only need an unwatermarked stream at 720p or below, the free tier may cover that requirement; if you need higher output, more scenes, multistreaming, or commercial use, check whether the paid plan is necessary for your workflow.

How to set up a first stream or recording
XSplit’s documented setup follows a straightforward sequence: make a scene, add sources, configure an output, then stream or record. The exact destination authentication steps depend on the platform and output selected. See the Getting Started guide for vendor instructions.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the PC meets the Windows and hardware requirements above and that its upload connection can support your intended stream settings.
- Create a scene. Sign in to XSplit Broadcaster and use the Layout Wizard for a guided starting layout, or create a scene and add sources manually. Arrange and resize the camera, gameplay, video, images, or other inputs as needed.
- Configure the output. Select a streaming platform and follow XSplit’s output setup to authenticate it. For a destination that supports it, XSplit also documents custom RTMP as an output option. Treat the stream key like a password: enter it only in the intended output configuration, do not share it, and reset it in the platform’s settings if it is exposed.
- Check the production before going live. Confirm that the correct scene and output are selected and that the desired sources and audio are present. XSplit’s setup guide describes selecting a configured output and clicking Stream; verify the destination’s live preview or status where available.
- Start the stream or record locally. Choose the configured output and click Stream to broadcast. To record, confirm which canvas to capture and click Record.
A USB webcam is an optional camera input, not a requirement for using XSplit. The software can work with other scene sources, including gameplay and media.

OBS Studio is the clearest alternative if XSplit’s operating-system restriction or plan gates do not fit. OBS describes itself as free and open source, with Windows, macOS, and Linux support.
