Is the XREAL xbx a01+ worth it? It is worth considering if you want a lightweight, private screen for movies or handheld gaming and already own a compatible video source. It is not a standalone headset: the glasses need a device that outputs DisplayPort video over USB-C, and some consoles require an adapter or hub. For text-heavy work, the reported edge blur and small-text difficulty are reasons to be cautious.
What the xbx a01+ is—and what it is not
The xbx a01+ is a pair of glasses that displays video from a connected device. XREAL describes a one-cable USB-C DisplayPort connection and says the glasses have no battery to charge. That makes them simpler than a headset that runs its own apps, but it also means you need a compatible phone, computer, handheld, or other video source. The glasses do not independently run streaming services or games. XREAL’s product page presents the product as a large virtual display, while its user manual identifies the xbx a01 series as entry-level viewing glasses.

XREAL advertises a 147-inch equivalent virtual screen, 62 g weight, 50-degree field of view, HDR10, and refresh rates up to 120Hz. It also claims peak brightness of 1,600 nits. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent measurements. The screen is a personal display in your field of view; the 147-inch figure should not be read as a physical panel or as a guarantee that every viewer will perceive the same size.

Movies and video
The lightweight design and bright image are among the strengths reported by Tom’s Guide. The review also found blur toward the edges, so the center of the image may be more satisfying than content that depends on uniform sharpness across the whole view. This is a reviewer observation, not a measurement by this publication. The glasses support Standard, Cinema, and Eye Care display modes, as well as SDR, AI-HDR, and HDR10 options, according to XREAL’s manual. Those mode names describe available settings, not a clinical eye-protection benefit.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Handheld gaming
A handheld with compatible video output can make the glasses a private gaming screen. XREAL lists Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED among its connection examples. Refresh rate and stabilization matter: the company says stabilization requires a 120Hz-capable source. Tom’s Guide reported warping and ghosting when using stabilization, so a source that meets the refresh-rate requirement does not guarantee that every player will prefer the stabilized image.
Text-heavy work
Tom’s Guide reported that small text was difficult to read for productivity use. That makes the xbx a01+ a less certain choice for spreadsheets, code, or long sessions with dense documents than for video or games with larger interface elements. If your main goal is a portable second monitor for detailed text, treat the reported edge blur and legibility limits as central drawbacks rather than minor caveats.

Check your source device before buying
A USB-C port by itself is not enough. The source must support DisplayPort video output, and XREAL specifies 5V/1A power for the large-screen use case. The company’s device connection guide lists examples and adapter requirements, but support can vary by specific device model.
- Phones, tablets, computers, and handhelds: Check the exact model for DisplayPort video output over USB-C and the required power support before relying on a direct connection.
- Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED: XREAL’s guide says these require an XREAL Hub.
- PlayStation, Xbox, and other HDMI sources: XREAL says they need an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Engadget’s July 2026 review says it does not connect directly without an additional dock solution. That is not the same as an official compatibility confirmation; check with XREAL for current support and the specific connection hardware before purchasing.
Count the hub or adapter in the total cost if your source needs one. The box listing includes the glasses, USB-C cable, S/M/L nose pads, cleaning cloth, protective case, and manual; it does not make every console connection plug-and-play.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Comfort, image quality, and stabilization trade-offs
Tom’s Guide described the glasses as lightweight and the display as bright, while also reporting edge blur and difficulties with small text. Its review lists 1080p micro-OLED screens and 1,600 nits peak perceived brightness; the latter is the reviewer’s reported figure and should not be confused with a universal brightness guarantee. Comfort and fit are personal, so the included three sizes of nose pads are useful, but they do not establish that the frame will suit every face or prescription.
Stabilization is optional rather than an unconditional advantage. XREAL says it depends on a 120Hz-capable source; Tom’s Guide described warping and ghosting in stabilization mode. The same review says HDR modes reduce refresh to 60Hz or 90Hz. Those observations make the practical choice dependent on what matters most in a session: refresh and steadiness, or HDR presentation. They are review findings, not independent lab results.

How it compares with alternatives
Tom’s Guide compared the xbx a01+ with RayNeo Air 4 Pro and judged the RayNeo stronger in audio, vividness, and raw panel sharpness, while favoring XREAL for comfort, brightness, design, and ease of use. That is one publication’s evaluation, not a universal ranking; the best fit depends on whether sound and sharpness or comfort and brightness carry more weight for you.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Engadget framed the xbx a01+ as a stripped-down display option and contrasted it with XREAL’s more expensive One-series glasses, which it described as having more sophisticated AR capabilities. If you want anchored spatial features, compare the actual feature set and complete price of the alternatives. If you mainly want a lightweight mirrored screen, the simpler approach may be preferable. The xbx a01+ itself should not be treated as a full spatial-computing headset.

Price, accessories, and who should buy it
When checked on October 7, 2026, XREAL’s US shop listed the glasses at $299 and showed $359 as the crossed-out price. Prices, promotions, stock, and bundle offers can change; the displayed crossed-out price is not a guarantee of a prior or future selling price. The listing also offered model-specific prescription lenses and a Beam Pro bundle option. Beam Pro is optional, not required for the basic connected-display use case. Check the current shop listing for the current price and what is included: XREAL US Shop listing.
- Good fit: You primarily want movies or handheld gaming on a private screen, have a confirmed compatible source, and value light weight and brightness.
- Think twice: You mainly need sharp, small text for work; you are sensitive to edge blur or stabilization artifacts; or your console needs accessories that change the overall cost.
- Look elsewhere: You want glasses that run apps on their own, or you need more sophisticated anchored spatial features rather than a display connected to another device.
Engadget rated the product 9/10 in its July 17, 2026 review, but that score is the publication’s assessment rather than a substitute for checking compatibility, fit, and your preferred use case.
