The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro was a strong-value Indian midrange phone when it launched in 2018. In 2026, it is an old 4G handset with obsolete official security support, aging batteries and limited remaining app life. It can still handle basic tasks if you find a very inexpensive, well-checked unit, but it is a poor choice as a secure primary phone or long-term purchase.

Which Redmi Note 5 Pro is this?

The Redmi Note 5 Pro was launched in India on February 14, 2018, above the standard Redmi Note 5. Its defining upgrades included the Snapdragon 636 and dual rear cameras. Xiaomi also sold a closely related phone called Redmi Note 5 in international markets, but regional versions could differ in firmware, camera hardware, memory and network bands. Do not assume every specification listed for a global Redmi Note 5 applies to the Indian Pro. See Xiaomi’s India product page, its UK Redmi Note 5 page, and AnandTech’s launch report.

The first Indian sale was reported for February 22, 2018. At launch, the 4 GB RAM/64 GB model cost ₹13,999 and the 6 GB RAM/64 GB model cost ₹16,999. These are historical launch prices, not current used-device prices; actual resale offers depend on condition, battery, location, seller and stock. AnandTech reported those launch configurations and prices in its launch coverage.

Specifications are based on Xiaomi’s product information, AnandTech and Android Authority. Xiaomi’s marketing figure is a typical battery capacity, not a measurement of what remains in a particular used phone. Launch sources vary between Android 7.1.1 and 7.1.2, so Android 7.1.x is the safer general description. This is a 4G phone, not a 5G model, and it uses micro-USB rather than USB-C.

Design and display

For its price in 2018, the 5.99-inch Full HD+ LCD was sharp and offered a broad 18:9 viewing area. The phone has a metal-bodied design and rear fingerprint reader. It is not an OLED display, has no high-refresh-rate mode, and its bezels look large beside current phones. Contemporary reviews found the display and build solid for the class, while noting the design’s age and the lack of USB-C. A used unit may also have discoloration, dead pixels, touch problems or display separation. Reviews: Android Authority and TechRadar.

Performance in 2026

The Snapdragon 636 was a notable step up for Xiaomi’s budget line in 2018. Today it remains adequate for calls, messaging, browsing, music and video streaming, social apps and light multitasking. Less demanding or older games can run, but newer games may need reduced graphics settings. Performance on an individual phone also depends on storage wear, background software, heat and battery condition. The 6 GB model offers more room for multitasking than the 4 GB model, but battery health, firmware and repair history matter more when assessing an eight-year-old device. Its 64 GB internal storage is tight by current standards; microSD can hold media but does not replace internal space required by many apps.

Cameras: useful for basics, not modern-phone quality

Rear cameras

The 12 MP main camera is paired with a 5 MP depth sensor for portrait effects; the second camera is not an ultrawide or telephoto lens. It could take pleasing daylight pictures for a budget phone of its generation, but low-light detail, autofocus, portrait cutouts and video stabilization fall short of current expectations.

Front camera

The 20 MP Sony IMX376 selfie camera and its selfie light were prominent launch features, and contemporary reviews considered the front camera a strength for the price. Treat that assessment as a comparison with 2018 budget phones: processing and low-light results do not make it a current camera-phone substitute. See the camera discussion in Android Authority’s review and TechRadar’s review.

Battery and charging: launch endurance is not used-phone endurance

The 4,000 mAh typical battery helped make the Note 5 Pro a strong endurance phone when new; reviewers reported all-day or better use depending on workload. That 2018 experience cannot predict a used unit’s capacity after more than eight years. The phone uses micro-USB and launched with a standard 5V/2A charging arrangement; reviewers criticized the lack of a fast charger in the box. Contemporary battery context is available from Android Authority, Android Central and TechRadar.

A battery-health app can offer only a rough estimate on an old Xiaomi. During any return period, observe battery behavior during cellular use, video playback, camera use and standby. Avoid a phone with a bulging back or lifting screen, unusual heat, a chemical smell, or a battery percentage that drops abruptly; these can indicate a damaged or swollen battery.

Software and security support

The phone launched with MIUI 9 on Android 7.1.x Nougat. Later official software reportedly reached the Android 9/Pie era in supported regions, but the exact firmware on a surviving device depends on its market and installed build. It is unsafe to assume a specific final version without checking the phone’s regional firmware; there is no basis here to claim current Android or HyperOS support.

In 2026, treat official security support as obsolete unless Xiaomi’s product-specific information establishes otherwise. Xiaomi says smartphone security maintenance is generally provided for at least two years after first shipment, subject to model conditions, and publishes end-of-life information through its security-update policy and Security Center. An unsupported phone is not a sensible primary device for banking, work, password management, sensitive personal information or unsupervised use by a child.

A used phone may carry Indian or global firmware, an unofficial reseller ROM, an unlocked bootloader or a custom ROM. Modified software can cause missing OTA updates, certification or banking-app problems, and other compatibility issues. Custom ROMs are an enthusiast route, not a reliable way to turn the phone into a secure everyday device: maintenance is uncertain, and camera processing, DRM or apps may break.

Check 4G, bands and carrier support before buying

The Note 5 Pro is 4G/LTE-only. Regional variants support different LTE bands, and carrier VoLTE requirements have changed since 2018. Before paying for an imported or used handset, check the exact model and region, supported bands, SIM-lock status and VoLTE support. Enter the IMEI in the intended carrier’s official compatibility checker rather than assuming that a phone which once worked on a network will still work there. Also confirm the IMEI is valid and not blacklisted, and check Google Play certification if you rely on apps that require it. Do not infer compatibility with a particular carrier or country from Indian-model specifications.

Used and refurbished buying checklist

Confirm identity and ownership

  • Check Settings → About phone and verify that the device is the Redmi Note 5 Pro, not the standard Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi Note 5A or another similarly named model.
  • Dial *#06# to display the IMEI; compare it with the box or labels if available and check it with the relevant carrier or blacklist service.
  • Confirm RAM and storage, ask which regional firmware is installed, and ask whether the bootloader is unlocked or the phone has been repaired.
  • Have the seller remove their Xiaomi account and demonstrate that setup completes after a reset. A reset does not necessarily remove activation lock from a previous owner’s account.
  • Get the return window, warranty provider and terms in writing before payment.

Inspect and test hardware

  • Look for display dead pixels, discoloration, image retention, touch dead zones and separation; test both cameras, fingerprint reader and face-unlock behavior.
  • Test the speaker, microphone, headphone jack, vibration, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SIM slots, mobile data, voice calls and VoLTE on the intended network.
  • Connect and disconnect a micro-USB cable several times and inspect the port for corrosion or looseness.
  • Look for a raised rear cover or lifting display. Do not buy a visibly swollen-battery phone for ordinary use.

Judge refurbished claims and battery condition

“Refurbished” does not mean factory-new. Ask whether the battery, display or charging hardware was replaced, who performed the work, what cosmetic grade means, and whether warranty is provided by Xiaomi or only the seller. A seller warranty does not restore software support. If a return period is offered, use it to watch for rapid battery drain, overheating and unexpected shutdowns under sustained use; software health estimates alone are not conclusive.

Is it worth buying in 2026?

The right comparison is total ownership cost, not the phone’s launch reputation: purchase price plus likely battery replacement or repair, the inconvenience of old connectivity and the risk of unsupported software. A bargain can become poor value if the battery is exhausted, repairs are needed or the handset cannot reliably connect to the intended carrier.

Buyer or use Verdict
Existing owner using it for basic, low-risk tasks It can remain usable if the battery and hardware are sound, but avoid sensitive activity on obsolete software.
Very low-cost backup, offline media or testing phone Potentially reasonable after inspection, with a working battery and network if needed.
Primary phone for several years, banking or work Poor fit because official security support is obsolete and future app compatibility is not assured.
Buyer needing 5G, USB-C, modern cameras or fast charging Choose a newer phone; this model does not meet those requirements.
Buyer whose offer is close to a newer refurbished or entry-level phone Compare remaining security support, battery guarantee, storage, network compatibility, warranty and return terms; the newer device is usually the more sensible value.

For alternatives, compare current Redmi models through Xiaomi India’s storefront or consider a newer refurbished phone from a reputable seller. Check the specific model’s update commitment, USB-C, storage, battery warranty and carrier support rather than choosing by brand alone. No current price or specific alternative model is assumed here.
