The Xiaomi Mi 3 was a 2013 flagship with a 5-inch Full HD display, 2GB of RAM and a choice of Snapdragon 800 or Tegra 4 hardware. It helped establish Xiaomi’s reputation for offering high-end specifications at aggressive prices. In 2026, however, Xiaomi no longer provides security updates for it, and its age, battery condition and network variant make it a poor choice as a primary phone.
It may still appeal to collectors or people seeking a Wi-Fi-only device for offline media or experimentation. Before considering one, identify the exact model: the Mi 3’s processor and cellular technology varied by region.
What was the Xiaomi Mi 3?
The Mi 3 was Xiaomi’s third-generation Mi flagship, positioned after the Mi 2 and Mi 2S and before the Mi 4. Announced on September 5, 2013, it brought a 1080p screen, a high-end processor for its era and a 13MP rear camera to a lower-priced flagship than many established competitors. Contemporary coverage compared its specifications with 2013 flagships including the Nexus 5 and LG G2 (TechRadar’s review).
Its importance is historical as much as technical: the Mi 3 helped Xiaomi build a reputation for strong specifications at an aggressive price, including in markets such as India and the Philippines. It was not one identical global handset, though; processor and cellular-network support depended on the regional variant.

| Storage | 16GB or 64GB, depending on market and model; no microSD slot |
| Rear camera | 13MP autofocus, f/2.2, dual LED flash |
| Front camera | 2MP |
| Video | 1080p recording; some specification listings also cite 720p slow motion |
| Battery | 3050mAh, non-removable when new |
| Connections and ports | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/GLONASS, micro-USB and 3.5mm headphone jack; listed wireless features may vary by model |
| Dimensions and weight | 144 × 73.6 × 8.1mm; approximately 145g |
| Launch software | MIUI on an early Android 4.x base; starting version varied by market and build |
These are original specifications, not a description of a used phone’s present condition. In particular, a decade-old battery is unlikely to retain its original capacity, and a 16GB model has little room for current apps and media. The hardware figures are listed by PhoneArena.
Release dates and regional availability
Xiaomi announced the Mi 3 on September 5, 2013. It went on sale in China in October 2013; India’s official launch followed in July 2014. Availability in other markets, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, varied by market and network version. A single worldwide release date would therefore be misleading. Regional history is summarized by Gadgets 360.
Mi 3 variants: Snapdragon 800 versus Tegra 4
The processor difference is tied to network configuration, not just performance. A seller’s “Mi 3” label does not establish which version is being offered.

Snapdragon 800 models
Snapdragon 800 models use a 2.3GHz quad-core chip and Adreno 330 graphics. They were associated with WCDMA- or CDMA-oriented variants, with supported bands depending on the specific model. Do not infer carrier compatibility from the processor name alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The China Mobile-oriented version used NVIDIA Tegra 4, commonly listed at 1.8GHz, and was designed for TD-SCDMA rather than the WCDMA networks used by many international models. NVIDIA’s launch material described the Mi 3 launching on China Mobile with Tegra 4.
What to verify before relying on cellular service
- Get the precise model or variant designation and supported 2G/3G bands.
- Confirm whether the handset is WCDMA, CDMA or TD-SCDMA-oriented, and whether it is carrier-unlocked.
- Check that the intended carrier still operates the relevant legacy network. The Mi 3 lacks 4G LTE; retired 3G networks, particularly in the United States, can leave an otherwise working handset without service.
- Do not assume an imported China-market unit will work like an international model. Treat cellular compatibility as unverified until the exact bands and current carrier policy are checked. Variant listings can be compared at GSMchoice.
Display, design and everyday hardware
The 5-inch 1080p IPS display was a strong feature for a phone at its original price. Its approximately 441 ppi resolution looks sharp for the period, and IPS generally offers natural colors and good viewing angles, though it cannot produce OLED-style blacks. The phone has capacitive navigation buttons below the screen, rather than on-screen controls, as noted in TechRadar’s contemporary review.

- Can connect to two devices simultaneously
- Dust and water resistant

The angular slab measures about 8.1mm thick and weighs roughly 145g. Its polycarbonate construction is not a metal body, and it has no water-resistance rating. Those specifications cannot establish the condition of an individual used unit: worn buttons, scratches, display problems or poor-quality replacement parts are possible after years of use.
There is no microSD slot. The 16GB model is especially restrictive because the operating system and apps consume part of its advertised capacity. A 64GB version is more practical for offline files, but storage does not solve the phone’s outdated software or network limitations.

Camera
The original rear camera is a 13MP autofocus unit with an f/2.2 aperture and dual LED flash; the front camera is 2MP. Those figures were competitive on paper in 2013, but megapixels do not indicate modern image quality. Expect limited low-light performance and dynamic range compared with current phones, and do not expect today’s computational photography features. On a used handset, check that autofocus works and that the lens and camera module are undamaged.

Battery
The 3050mAh figure describes the original non-removable battery, not the battery health of a handset sold in 2026. All original batteries are many years old. Ask for evidence that the phone charges and holds power; sudden shutdowns, rapid drain, overheating or a lifting rear cover are warning signs. A swollen battery should not be used. Replacement may be possible, but part quality and repair safety vary. PhoneArena lists Quick Charge 2.0 support for the Snapdragon variant, but charging capability cannot restore a degraded battery (PhoneArena specifications).
Software history and security support
The Mi 3 shipped with MIUI on an Android 4.x base. Listings cite different starting Android versions, including 4.2, 4.3 or 4.4, reflecting market, build and update differences; there is no single launch version that applies universally. Its official update history reached the MIUI 9 era, with Android 6.0 reported for WCDMA/CDMA variants. The final build depended on model and region; MIUI ROM’s history provides variant-specific firmware context.
In 2026, Xiaomi lists the Mi 3 among end-of-life products and says it no longer maintains software, firmware or security updates for listed products (Xiaomi Security Center). That means there are no current manufacturer security patches. Modern apps may not install or work reliably, and sensitive apps may reject the old software. An Android 6 installation or an unofficial ROM does not make the device currently supported or secure. Custom firmware also varies by exact model and can involve unlocking, wiping data and troubleshooting hardware features; it does not fix radio-band limitations.

Is the Xiaomi Mi 3 still usable?
Reasonable limited uses
- Collecting or exploring early Xiaomi and Android hardware.
- Offline music or video playback, especially on a Wi-Fi-only device.
- Retro Android experimentation or a deliberately limited secondary device.
Even for these uses, a tested battery, working charging port and enough storage matter. A 64GB unit is more suitable for offline media than a 16GB one.
Uses to avoid
- Primary smartphone duty or essential communications.
- Banking, payment, password management, work authentication or other sensitive accounts.
- Dependable navigation or cellular service without confirmed carrier and band compatibility.
- Modern app-heavy use, current camera expectations or a device that needs ongoing support.
It was fast for a 2013 flagship; in 2026, old software, limited RAM, internal storage, network support and battery condition matter more than its original performance.
Quick Recap
Used Xiaomi Mi 3 buying checklist
- Identify the phone. Confirm it is the Mi 3, not the different, later Redmi 3, and obtain the exact variant, processor and storage capacity. Do not rely on the listing title alone.
- Check network and ownership status. Compare supported bands with the carrier’s current network policy, confirm whether it is unlocked, and check the IMEI status where applicable.
- Check account access and software. Make sure it is not stuck at a Mi-account activation screen, verify the installed software, and test whether Google services work if you need them.
- Inspect screen and body. Test touch across the whole display and look for dead zones, discoloration, ghost touches, loose buttons, cracks or signs of poor-quality repair.
- Test battery and charging. Ask for a low-charge-to-charging demonstration, check for unusual heat or rapid drain, inspect for a lifting rear cover, and test the micro-USB port for looseness.
- Test components. Check both cameras and flash, microphones, speaker, vibration, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the headphone jack.
- Price the risk. Used prices vary by country, storage, condition and variant, and no reliable universal 2026 price is established. Consider one only at a low price, fully tested, for a specific collector or secondary use; repair costs can exceed its practical value.
Who should buy one?
| Buyer or use | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Collector or Android-history enthusiast | Potentially worthwhile if the unit is correctly identified and in acceptable condition. |
| Experimenter or offline-media user | Potentially suitable as a limited, non-sensitive device, especially with adequate storage. |
| Primary phone user | Avoid: no current security support, no 4G/5G, and uncertain app and carrier compatibility. |
| Security-sensitive user | Avoid for banking, authentication, passwords or sensitive communications. |
| Buyer seeking current mobile service | Proceed only after exact-variant and carrier verification; a current replacement should be assessed for LTE/5G, security-update support, battery condition, warranty, storage and carrier compatibility. |
