If Xfinity marks a router or gateway as end of life (EOL) or unsupported, it no longer supports that device on its network and says it will not install, activate, or recommend it. That does not establish that every device already connected will be disconnected immediately. Check the exact model in Xfinity’s device information and read any notice sent to your account before deciding what to do.
What losing software support means
There are two related but different issues: whether equipment receives software updates, and whether Xfinity still supports it on the network. Comcast says leased cable modems and wireless gateways receive automatic software updates. For purchased modems, updates depend on the device remaining compatible and its vendor continuing to maintain the software.

Xfinity’s EOL guidance says, “Devices that are identified as EOL are no longer supported on the Xfinity network.” The page does not state a universal cutoff date for every model or say that support ending automatically disconnects every existing connection at once. Verify your model’s status and follow any account-specific notice.

Comcast explains that older equipment may not have current speed and security capabilities, and that devices can become less secure over time as vulnerabilities are discovered. Those are general reasons to keep equipment maintained; they do not establish that a particular Xfinity model has a specific vulnerability.

What to do based on who owns the equipment
If you rent your gateway or modem
Check Xfinity’s equipment update information or contact Xfinity to ask about an order or exchange. The online update option is not available to every customer, and some routes may involve additional fees, so confirm eligibility and any cost before proceeding.
If you own the modem or gateway
Look up the exact make and model in Xfinity’s current device information. Confirm both that it is compatible with Xfinity service and that it supports your subscribed speed tier. Do this before purchasing a replacement; compatibility can depend on the service and speed you need.

How to handle the old device
Use Xfinity’s listed return options where applicable, or find a local electronics recycling option. Xfinity advises customers not to put old equipment in household trash.

The choice is between continuing with compatible customer-owned equipment and using rented equipment. A rented gateway comes with Xfinity-managed automatic updates, while a purchased device’s updates depend on compatibility and vendor maintenance. Either way, confirm current compatibility and speed support rather than relying on a model’s age or general specifications alone.

- Confirm it can handle the speed tier on your account.
- Consider the modem and Wi-Fi capabilities your home actually needs.
- If renting, ask about update or exchange eligibility and any fees.
