Flattening offers a practical escape hatch: it turns the form’s rendered appearance into static page content, but sacrifices fields, scripts, and other interactive behavior. A Rust flattener can address that gap, though the phrase “pure Rust” says nothing by itself about which XFA features it supports or how faithfully it renders them.
Why XFA forms are different from ordinary PDF forms
XFA, or XML Forms Architecture, is an XML-based system for describing interactive PDF forms. It is not merely a set of conventional PDF form fields layered over an otherwise fixed page. The XML can describe a template, form data, calculations, validations, formatting, and other behavior. Adobe’s historical PDF Reference, version 1.6 describes the PDF form dictionary’s XFA entry as pointing to an XML resource, which may be a stream or an array of packets.

That distinction matters when a viewer tries to display the document. A conventional static page has its layout already established. An XFA form may need to interpret its template and data to determine what the page should look like.

Static and dynamic XFA need different levels of support
Static XFA keeps its layout fixed
In a static XFA form, the layout does not change at runtime. The form may still contain fields and other interactive features, but its page arrangement is fixed.

Dynamic XFA can change as data changes
A dynamic XFA form can alter its layout and pagination in response to data, sometimes using client-side scripts. Adobe’s example is a purchase order that expands and paginates to accommodate different amounts of data. Rendering such a document is not just painting a pre-existing page: the viewer must produce the appropriate layout for the document’s current contents.
Adobe says modern browsers’ built-in PDF viewers can render static XFA PDFs but cannot render dynamic XFA PDFs. That is a narrower claim than saying browser viewers fail on every XFA document, but it explains why a form that works in one environment can be blank or unusable in another.

What flattening fixes—and what it gives up
Flattening turns a form’s graphical appearance into static-looking document content. Adobe’s Assembler Service and DDX Reference defines it this way: “Flattening means that form fields retain their graphical appearance but are no longer interactive.” Once flattened, the fields cannot be filled as form fields, and associated scripts no longer function.
Adobe’s documented Acrobat workarounds for XFA editing—saving as EPS or printing to Adobe PDF—also warn that flattening can remove fields, layers, interactive objects, buttons, and JavaScript. These are documented workarounds, not guarantees about every third-party converter. The practical rule is to keep the original XFA file if anyone may need to edit, calculate, or submit the form later.

Flattening is useful when the goal is a stable visual document: for example, sharing a completed form with someone whose viewer cannot display its dynamic layout, or assembling it into a document where the form need not remain editable. It is the wrong choice when the recipient must continue entering data or rely on the form’s scripts.
What a Rust flattener needs to make clear
“Pure Rust” describes an implementation or dependency choice, not a compatibility guarantee. It does not establish whether the program handles dynamic layout, executes form scripts, preserves fonts and images, or produces faithful pagination. Those questions require project-specific documentation or tests; the available evidence does not establish the capabilities or quality of the particular flattener named here.

- Static versus dynamic layout: Does it render a fixed template only, or recalculate layout and pagination when data changes?
- Script behavior: Are scripts executed, deliberately skipped, or unsupported? A static rendering that omits script-dependent layout may differ from what a full XFA viewer produces.
- Visual fidelity: Check the output for fonts, images, barcodes, field values, and page breaks against a trusted rendering of the same document.
- Output semantics: Confirm that recipients understand the result is no longer an interactive form.
- Execution boundary: If a renderer runs form-provided scripts, consider the security implications and whether execution is isolated.
The Rust crate pdf_xfa demonstrates that XFA-specific tooling can expose extraction, layout rendering, flattening, and validation APIs. Its documentation says forms requiring JavaScript produce static-layout output by default; full JavaScript execution requires its xfa-js-sandboxed feature. That is useful context about the range of engineering choices in this space, not evidence that another Rust flattener uses the same approach or has equivalent support.

These options serve different needs: a local library or utility may suit an automated workflow, while Adobe’s documented desktop or enterprise routes have their own workflow and service requirements. None should be treated as a lossless conversion when the objective is flattening.

A practical check before sharing a flattened form
- Keep an untouched copy of the original XFA PDF. Flattening removes functionality that cannot be recovered from the flattened appearance alone.
- Render the form with a viewer that supports its behavior. For dynamic forms, Adobe says modern browser viewers cannot render the dynamic XFA content.
- Flatten only when static output is acceptable. If calculations, scripts, or recipient data entry matter, use a workflow that preserves an interactive form instead.
- Inspect the resulting pages. Check all pages and any variable-length sections for missing content, unexpected pagination, or visual changes.
- Label the output clearly. Tell recipients that the flattened PDF is for viewing or printing, not continued form entry.
XFA persists as a problem not because every PDF viewer fails on every form, but because dynamic forms ask a viewer to do more than display fixed page content. A flattener trades that behavior for a more portable visual result; the useful engineering question is how much of the source form it can render correctly before making that trade.
