Choose an Xbox Series X with an optical drive if you own compatible Xbox discs, want to keep buying physical games, or want to play UHD Blu-ray discs. Choose digital games if you prefer an account-based library and a disc-free routine. In either case, games use the console’s local storage; for a disc game, the disc generally remains the play license.
What the disc-drive Series X can do
The optical-drive Xbox Series X can play supported physical Xbox games and UHD Blu-ray discs. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page describes the console’s UHD Blu-ray Disc player and disc support.

Physical media does not mean a game runs directly from the disc. Compatible games install to the console’s local storage. For a compatible disc-based backward-compatible game, the disc must remain inserted while you play: it supplies the license. Xbox explains this distinction in its storage primer.
How to choose between discs and digital purchases
| Consideration | Disc-capable Series X and physical copies | Digital purchases |
|---|---|---|
| Existing library | Use compatible Xbox discs; compatibility depends on the individual title. | Access compatible digital titles through your account library. |
| What you need to play | For compatible disc-based backward-compatible games, keep the disc in the drive. | Access the game digitally through your account; check applicable account and platform terms. |
| Installation and storage | Games install to local storage. The disc does not replace storage. | Games also use local storage. |
| Convenience | You need to handle and keep track of discs; the drive also plays UHD Blu-ray discs. | No disc handling; access games digitally. |
| Price and resale | Availability, price and resale value depend on the title, edition, market and condition. | Prices and promotions vary. No format is established as always cheaper. |
To compare cost, check the same game and edition in your market at the time you plan to buy. Physical and digital prices can change, and a physical copy’s resale value is not guaranteed.

Can you use old Xbox discs on Series X?
Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games—not every title from those generations. For a supported disc-based backward-compatible game, the console downloads the game to storage, and you need the disc inserted to play. Check the individual title against Xbox’s backward-compatibility information.
This distinction matters when choosing a console: Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. A Series X disc drive does not make every older Xbox game compatible.

What the August 2026 disc-to-digital feature changes
On August 26, 2026, Xbox announced a feature that lets eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs claim a digital entitlement. Xbox said Insiders could begin testing it on August 31, 2026, and that it was starting with thousands of titles, with not every title available at launch. The feature is title-specific and its availability can change. Xbox’s announcement says the supported disc must be inserted and launched to claim the entitlement.

- Insert a supported Xbox One or Series X game disc into an Xbox Series X with an optical drive.
- Launch the disc and check whether the console prompts you to accept a digital license.
- If prompted, follow the console’s instructions. If there is no prompt, the title may not be eligible.
Xbox says Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not supported by this announced feature. The entitlement option is an added possibility for eligible titles, not a conversion guarantee for an entire disc library. Xbox VP Jason Ronald described its aim as making “it easier for those libraries to move forward with players.”

Which option should you buy?
Choose the disc-drive Series X if…
- You already own compatible Xbox game discs and want to keep using them.
- You expect to buy or borrow physical copies.
- You want the console’s UHD Blu-ray playback.
Choose digital purchases if…
- You do not have a disc collection to use.
- You value an account-based library and prefer not to handle discs.
These are preference-based recommendations: the evidence does not establish a universal price winner. If you are buying a disc-drive console specifically for older games, confirm that the particular titles you care about are supported.
