When should you clear the Xbox Series X cache?
Try cache clearing when a game freezes, fails to load, or has connectivity problems. Rockstar Games Customer Support and Activision Support describe it as troubleshooting, not routine maintenance. Neither cited guide recommends clearing the cache at a set interval, so there is no supported weekly or monthly schedule.

Cache can refer to different kinds of storage. Microsoft’s Xbox developer documentation distinguishes temporary local storage from title-specific persistent local storage. That distinction is useful context, but it does not establish that a consumer-facing option clears every cache or every game’s data.

Which cache-clearing method should you use?
The cited support articles describe two separate procedures. Begin with the shutdown-and-unplug method for general cache-related troubleshooting. The Settings option is a distinct Blu-ray persistent-storage procedure; the sources do not say it clears the same data as unplugging the console.

How to shut down and unplug the console
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s Series X|S instructions, last updated July 29, 2025, specify a two-minute wait. Activision Support gives the same unplugging method.
- Shut down the Xbox Series X using the console’s power button.
- Unplug the console’s power cord.
- Leave it unplugged for two minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the console on.
Rockstar says this procedure does not affect save data, but resets brightness and language settings. Those effects are reported by Rockstar; they should not be read as a broader Microsoft guarantee.

How to clear Blu-ray persistent storage
Rockstar and Activision list this as a separate Series X troubleshooting procedure. On the console, open the Xbox guide with the controller button, select the profile icon and Settings, then follow this path:
Settings > Devices and connections > Blu-ray > Persistent Storage > Clear persistent storage

Menu labels can vary with system software and region. Because this is a separate option, do not assume it has the same effect as disconnecting power or that it removes every kind of cached data.
What “cache” means on an Xbox
There is more than one storage layer. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes temporary local storage, whose files are guaranteed only while a title is running and are not guaranteed to remain between launches, and persistent local storage associated with a particular title. The developer documentation says persistent local storage can hold non-save data such as cache; it directs game saves to connected storage or another cloud-storage mechanism.

This is an explanation of storage terminology, not a consumer procedure or a promise about what the Blu-ray menu clears. It is one reason not to treat the two support procedures as interchangeable or assume either one clears every game’s data.

Cache clearing may help with the symptoms described by the support pages, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every freeze, load failure, or connection issue. Move on to troubleshooting for the specific game or Xbox error code. Before hardware troubleshooting, Microsoft’s Series X Digital service guide advises checking for system updates. The cache-clearing guidance alone is not a reason to open the console or buy accessories.
