Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Both advertise up to 120 FPS, but a game must support that mode and the display must be compatible. Those are Microsoft’s platform targets—not guarantees that every game runs at a particular resolution or frame rate.
How much sharper can Series X look?
Microsoft describes Series X as designed for native 4K gaming and Series S as designed for 1440p gaming, with the ability to upscale to 4K. That makes Series X the better fit if you specifically want games rendered at native 4K on a compatible screen. Upscaling can output an image to a 4K display, but it is not the same as rendering the game at native 4K.

These are design targets, not universal results. A game may use different resolutions or graphics settings, and the cited Xbox specifications do not establish a title-by-title resolution comparison. Check the specific game’s supported modes if you need to know how it performs.
What do the GPU specifications tell you?
Microsoft lists Series X with a 12 TFLOPS custom RDNA 2 GPU, 52 compute units and a 1.825 GHz clock. Series S is listed with a 4 TFLOPS custom RDNA 2 GPU, 20 compute units and a 1.565 GHz clock. Microsoft also lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory for Series X and 10 GB for Series S. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results.

The listed TFLOPS figures do not mean Series X runs games exactly three times faster. Real results depend on the game and its chosen resolution, visual settings and performance mode. The available specifications do not establish a consistent cross-game multiplier.
Will either console reach 120 FPS?
Both console families support frame rates up to 120 FPS, but that is a platform ceiling. Microsoft qualifies the capability as requiring supported content and a compatible display; not every game offers a 120 FPS mode. A display’s compatibility also matters, so verify both the game mode and screen specifications rather than assuming the console alone guarantees the result.

What changes with storage and discs?
Storage configurations
Microsoft lists Series S configurations with 512 GB or 1 TB SSDs, and Series X configurations with 1 TB or 2 TB SSDs. Confirm the capacity on the exact retail listing because it varies by model. Both support Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards, which Microsoft says add storage at internal SSD performance. USB external HDD support is also listed.

Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. Microsoft lists a UHD Blu-ray drive on specified Series X models, but not every Series X configuration should be assumed to include one. Check the listing if you want to use disc-based games or movies.

Which one better fits your setup?
- Choose Series X if native 4K gaming is a priority, you want the stronger listed GPU specification, or you need a disc drive on a configuration that includes one.
- Choose Series S if a digital-only console and its 1440p design target fit your needs.
- Compare exact configurations before buying: storage capacity and, for Series X, the presence of a disc drive vary. Prices and availability depend on market and retailer, and Microsoft’s specifications do not establish which console is the better value for a particular price.
What the performance comparison does—and does not—establish
Both consoles belong to the Xbox Series X|S family and share platform features such as Quick Resume. The clearest documented performance distinction is Series X’s higher rendering target and stronger listed GPU specification. The cited specifications do not show that the consoles have different game libraries, nor do they provide measured benchmarks, game-by-game resolution or frame-rate results, or a recommendation for a particular TV or monitor.
