Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your game runs poorly on Xbox Series S, start with a repeatable reproduction and a PIX timing capture—not a guess about the console’s hardware. Compare the CPU and GPU timeline with the slow frame, then check whether threading, memory, file I/O, or residency activity aligns with it. Change one measured cause at a time and capture again. There is no universal Series S bottleneck or one fix that applies to every title.
Start by reproducing the specific symptom
Choose a stable scene that reliably shows the problem. It might be consistently long or uneven frames, a single hitch, thread contention, an asset-streaming stall, or unexpectedly high power use. A capture is only useful if you can compare the same workload before and after a change.

Record the build, GDK and engine versions, console mode, scene, resolution, frame-rate settings, and whether you are testing a development or retail configuration. Keep workload states distinct: loading, menus, idle, active gameplay, combat or other demanding areas, multiplayer lobbies, and constrained states can exercise different code paths.
Use PIX to locate the slow frame
Microsoft describes PIX Timing captures as combining CPU and GPU profiling in one capture. Inspect the timeline around the affected frames, and add PIX Events and Markers to identify meaningful title-specific phases. Depending on the data selected, a capture can also expose CPU samples, memory allocations, file access, GPU timings, residency operations, and counters. See Microsoft Learn’s PIX timing-capture documentation.

Look for activity that lines up in time with the symptom. A GPU-heavy frame calls for a different investigation than a CPU thread waiting on synchronization, an allocation pattern, or I/O and residency activity during an asset-streaming hitch. PIX exposes these data categories; the engine-level fix depends on what your title’s capture shows.
Investigate threading with the right view
Microsoft identifies both PIX and Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) as tools for threading investigations. PIX is organized around game-development workflows. WPA can expose less-filtered system data, but you need to build filters to isolate the relevant activity. Choose the view that helps answer the question in your capture rather than treating either tool as a diagnosis by itself. See Microsoft’s PIX and WPA guidance.
Account for capture overhead
Capture-data choices affect runtime and analysis overhead. Microsoft notes that high-rate CPU sampling and collecting all heap allocations are examples of options that can increase overhead. Collect the least intrusive data that can answer your question; for a timing-sensitive issue, compare against a less-instrumented run so you can tell whether the capture changed the behavior. See Microsoft Learn’s capture guidance.

Match the fix to the evidence
Change one suspected cause at a time, then repeat the same workload and compare captures. This helps establish whether the change affected the slow frame instead of merely changing the scene or measurement conditions.
- If the GPU is the constraint: test rendering-resolution or frame-rate changes, and look for avoidable rendering in full-screen menus, idle states, or other low-interaction scenes. Microsoft recommends reviewing these areas as ways to reduce unnecessary GPU work, particularly where players are unlikely to notice a difference. Such changes may reduce GPU work or energy use; they are not guaranteed frame-time fixes.
- If the CPU or threading is implicated: inspect work distribution, synchronization, and the threads active around the affected frame. Use PIX or WPA to investigate the relevant thread behavior.
- If memory, file I/O, or residency activity coincides with a hitch: investigate that specific allocation, asset-access, or residency path. Do not infer a memory-bandwidth problem from the Series S model alone.
An uncapped frame rate can keep the GPU close to full utilization. Microsoft’s sustainability guidance suggests considering a 60 or 120 fps cap where appropriate, as well as reviewing resolution and low-interaction states. A cap may reduce GPU work and power use, but the fact that a title is uncapped does not prove that it is the cause of its stutter. See Microsoft’s Xbox sustainability developer guidance.
Measure power separately from frame-time
Xbox “Power Load %” is a relative measure of console power use, not an exact wattage reading for an individual device. It is useful as a separate diagnostic axis; it is not a substitute for frame-time or CPU/GPU execution data. Microsoft’s sustainability guidance says Series X|S development-kit front-panel views and PIX counters can show Power Load. PIX timing captures record instantaneous values at 1 ms granularity, so readings vary across a frame. The GDK March 2023 API PIXGetPowerMetrics returns a rolling average, according to that guidance. See Microsoft’s Xbox sustainability guidance.

For a power-focused investigation, Microsoft’s PIX Power Monitor guide describes connecting a PC with the latest GDK and PIX to an Xbox development kit, plotting GPU% Busy and Power Load, and examining the Metrics tab after capturing representative gameplay. The guide requires development-kit access; it does not describe a workflow available to every retail-console owner. Follow the guide’s current setup directions and restore profiling settings after the test. See Microsoft’s PIX Power Monitor guide.

Microsoft’s platform baseline documentation reports averages for more than 200 titles tested from October 2022 through its March 2023 publication point. Its Series S active-gameplay figures vary by resolution:
| Resolution | Average Power Load | Approximate power | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1440p | 58.6% | Approximately 77 W | Xbox Series S, active gameplay; Microsoft’s historical sample of more than 200 titles tested since October 2022 through March 2023 |
| 1080p | 51.6% | Approximately 71 W | Xbox Series S, active gameplay; Microsoft’s historical sample of more than 200 titles tested since October 2022 through March 2023 |
Microsoft says results vary by title, resolution, frame rate, and gameplay area. These are historical platform power averages—not frame-time targets, individual-title requirements, or guarantees for every game or console. See Microsoft’s Xbox platform baseline documentation.
