Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers to compatible devices. One is a cross-device game ownership benefit; the other is a streaming service. A game can support both, but check each feature’s eligibility separately.

When to choose Play Anywhere
Choose Play Anywhere when you want to own a participating digital game and play it locally on more than one supported device—for example, on an Xbox console and a Windows PC. The game is installed on the device you use, rather than streamed.

Xbox describes the feature as “Buy once, play anywhere.” The phrase does not mean every Xbox game is included or that the game is free: you still need to buy the digital game. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge or check Xbox’s Play Anywhere information before purchasing. Disc games do not qualify for this digital-game benefit.
What transfers with a Play Anywhere game?
Xbox says your progress can follow you between supported devices, including saves, add-ons, and achievements. Purchased or earned downloadable content, including add-ons and season passes, is supported for owned Play Anywhere games. Xbox awards one shared set of Gamerscore and achievements. You cannot be signed into the same game on multiple supported devices at the same time.

When to choose Xbox Cloud Gaming
Choose Cloud Gaming when you want to play a supported game without installing it locally, or when you want to stream a game to a device that does not run its console version. Xbox describes the service as a way to play “hundreds of console games” on compatible devices.
Most cloud-playable games require Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential, according to Xbox’s current Cloud Gaming page. Select free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Xbox also allows streaming of select games you own or buy outside Game Pass; ownership alone does not make every game streamable. Check the current cloud library for the specific title.

Devices and setup
Cloud Gaming can reach more device categories than Play Anywhere, but support depends on the specific device and region. Xbox lists PCs, phones, tablets, consoles, select smart TVs, Fire TV, select VR headsets, and browser play. Before subscribing or buying hardware, check Xbox’s current supported devices and regions and the cloud-playable game list.

Select games offer touch controls. On its US page, Xbox states a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps and suggests 20 Mbps for best quality on some devices; it recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are Xbox’s stated requirements and guidance, not a guarantee of low latency or a particular image quality. Performance depends on your connection, location, and device.

Streaming trade-offs
Because the game is streamed, your experience depends on network conditions as well as device compatibility. Xbox also notes that streamed play can have limitations, including video resolution, audio output, or save storage. Titles, features, and availability can change by region, platform, and Game Pass plan.
Can you use both features for the same game?
Sometimes. Play Anywhere eligibility means a participating digital game you own can be installed on supported devices; Cloud Gaming eligibility means a game can be streamed under the service’s current access rules. A title may support both, but one does not imply the other. Confirm the Play Anywhere badge and the game’s listing in the live cloud library independently.

Which one fits your situation?
- You own a supported digital game and want to install it on Xbox and PC: Check whether it has the Play Anywhere badge.
- You want to play without downloading the console game: Check whether the title is currently cloud playable and whether your device and region are supported.
- You want to stream a game you already own: Confirm that the particular owned game is among the select titles Xbox permits you to stream.
- You want to play on a phone, tablet, or supported TV: Check Cloud Gaming device support, your region, and controller or touch-control compatibility for the title.
Plan names, entitlements, supported regions and devices, and the cloud library can change. Xbox’s US cloud page also notes plan-specific monthly cloud-play limits and says cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass; confirm current plan terms on Xbox before subscribing.
