What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Xbox app on Windows is adding more of your PC library: games from Steam and Epic Games Store can now appear alongside your Xbox-supported content. The goal is simple—one place to see what you own, what’s installed, and what you can launch.
If you’ve ever switched between launchers just to find a title, this is meant to reduce the friction. You’ll still manage installs and updates through the original storefronts, but the Xbox app becomes a central hub for discovery and launching.

What changed: Xbox PC app now shows Steam and Epic games
In practical terms, the Xbox app can read metadata and installed-game information from your Steam and Epic libraries, then display those titles in your Xbox PC game library. Once linked, the app can show your library items and help you start them without manually opening multiple launchers.

Why this matters for PC gamers
Most PC players don’t own games in only one storefront. When one app can display and launch from multiple sources, you get fewer context switches, cleaner reminders, and faster “find the game” moments.
- Less friction: Search and browse in one UI instead of hopping between Steam and Epic.
- Better library visibility: Your installed games can appear where you already manage Xbox-related titles.
- Faster launching: Launching from the Xbox app can cut down on manual steps.
- Centralized management: Even when installs still live in the original launcher, discovery and launching become more consistent.
Prerequisites and what you need
Before troubleshooting, confirm you meet the basic requirements. Some features won’t appear until the app has the right permissions and linked accounts.
- Windows PC supported by the Xbox app for Windows
- Xbox app installed (Microsoft Store version)
- Signed in to the Xbox app with your Microsoft account
- Steam installed and ideally logged in on the same PC
- Epic Games Store installed and logged in on the same PC
- Games need to be present locally (if you expect installed-game entries to show immediately)
How to connect Steam and Epic inside the Xbox app
The UI can change slightly across updates, but the flow is consistent: update the Xbox app, sign in, then connect Steam/Epic accounts. After linking, give it a moment to scan your library.
Verify you have the right Xbox app version
Open the Microsoft Store, search for Xbox, and update the Xbox app. If updates are pending, install them first—older versions might not show the Steam/Epic integration options at all.
Link Steam to your Xbox app library
- Open the Xbox app on your Windows PC.
- Go to Settings (usually a gear icon).
- Find the Accounts or Connected accounts area.
- Select Steam (or a button like Connect next to Steam).
- Complete the sign-in/authorization prompt in your browser.
- Return to the Xbox app and wait for the library refresh.
If you have multiple Steam accounts on the same machine, connect the one that owns the games you want to see.
Link Epic Games Store to your Xbox app library
- Open the Xbox app and go to Settings.
- Go to Accounts or Connected accounts.
- Select Epic Games Store (or Connect next to Epic).
- Authorize access via the Epic sign-in prompt.
- Return to the Xbox app and trigger/allow a library refresh.
Epic libraries can be large; the first scan can take a while on HDDs. If nothing shows, wait for a refresh cycle and then check again.

How the integrated library behaves (launch, install, updates)
It helps to set expectations. Xbox app integration is mainly about visibility and launching, not replacing each launcher’s install pipeline.

After linking, selecting a Steam/Epic title in the Xbox app should start the game using the installed game’s executable path. In most cases, the Xbox app acts as the launcher UI, while the game still runs from its original installation folder.
If a title doesn’t launch, it’s usually one of these: the game isn’t installed where the app expects, the executable moved, or the integration metadata is stale.
Installing or moving game files
Steam and Epic still own installation and download behavior. If you move libraries (for example, Steam library folder on another drive), the Xbox app may need a refresh—or the launch path may need to be re-detected.
Practical rule: do library location changes inside Steam/Epic first, then let the Xbox app rescan.

Xbox achievements are only meaningful for games that support that ecosystem. For Steam/Epic titles, the Xbox app may still show the games and enable launching, but achievement support can vary by title.

If you’re expecting Xbox achievement pop-ups for a Steam game, confirm the game supports Xbox services. Otherwise, you may only get the Xbox app experience (library + launch), not full achievement integration.
Update cadence and patching
Patches will still typically be managed by Steam and Epic. The Xbox app may display an updated library state, but it won’t replace Steam’s or Epic’s updater.
If a game appears installed but launches into an outdated state, run the update in its original launcher, then refresh the Xbox library.

If the integration doesn’t work as expected, don’t jump straight to reinstalling everything. Use the least disruptive checks first.
Library shows nothing from Steam or Epic
- Confirm Steam/Epic are linked in the Xbox app Settings → Connected accounts.
- Make sure you’re signed into the correct accounts inside Steam and Epic on this PC.
- Launch Steam/Epic once after linking so they can initialize and expose local library info.
- Restart the Xbox app and look for a refresh or sync action.
- Wait. The first scan can take time, especially with many titles.
If you recently installed games, confirm they are fully installed (not just partially downloaded) before expecting them to appear.
Games appear but don’t launch
- Verify the game launches from Steam/Epic directly.
- Check game install location. If you moved folders, the Xbox app may still point to the old path.
- Try a library refresh in the Xbox app settings.
- Reboot if launchers were updated or after major library moves.
When launch fails only through the Xbox app, the game’s local installation is usually fine—what’s broken is the integration metadata path.

Stale/incorrect game lists
Staleness is usually caused by library changes or incomplete scans. Fix it by reconnecting or forcing resync, not by deleting your whole library.
- In the Xbox app, remove the link under Connected accounts for Steam and/or Epic.
- Reconnect the same account.
- Ensure Steam/Epic are open at least once after relinking.
- Let the Xbox app finish scanning and then re-check your library.
Login loops or failed connections
- Temporarily disable VPN/ad blockers and try again.
- Check browser sign-in state in the authorization prompt.
- Update the Xbox app again—some connection failures correlate with outdated auth components.
If the link fails repeatedly, use a clean browser session for the authorization step.
Permissions, privacy, and security checks
Account linking means the Xbox app needs permission to read library metadata so it can display games. Review what’s being connected and avoid linking accounts you don’t own.
- Use only your own Microsoft account in the Xbox app.
- Revoke connections in the Steam/Epic or Xbox account settings if you no longer want integration.
- Don’t share linked-account screenshots or authorization codes.
What this does and doesn’t replace
The integrated library doesn’t remove the need for Steam or Epic. Think of it as a better front door, not a full replacement.
Compared with Steam
Steam remains the source of truth for downloads, shader cache handling, and most store/community features. The Xbox app’s Steam visibility helps you find and launch, but Steam still manages Steam-specific workflows.
- Steam does best: installs, patching, Steam Cloud, workshop/community features.
- Xbox app does best: single search/browse UI across connected libraries.
Compared with Epic Games Launcher
Epic stays responsible for Epic Online Services behavior, library installs, and Epic’s own update system. The Xbox app can centralize your view, but it won’t substitute for Epic’s core launcher functions.

- Epic does best: Epic installs, patching, store entitlements, Epic-specific social features.
- Xbox app does best: consolidated library and launching from a common interface.
Compared with game launchers you might already use
If you use third-party launchers (or Windows shortcuts) to reduce context switching, the Xbox app’s integration can be a more official option—especially if you want the Xbox PC experience for games across storefronts.
However, third-party tools sometimes offer deeper customization (filters, tagging, launch profiles). You may keep them even after Xbox integration to maintain your preferred workflow.
Best practices to keep your library accurate
- Connect once, then refresh after changes (new installs, uninstalling, moving libraries).
- Keep Steam/Epic logged in so metadata scanning doesn’t fail.
- Prefer library moves inside the original launcher (Steam/Epic), then resync in Xbox.
- Use stable install paths when possible to avoid broken launch paths.
- Update the Xbox app when major UI changes roll out.
FAQs
Does the Xbox app replace Steam or Epic?
No. The Xbox app focuses on showing your library and helping you launch games. Steam and Epic still handle installation, downloads, and patching for their titles.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will my Steam or Epic games appear even if they’re not installed?
Often you’ll see installed titles first. Library visibility for owned-but-not-installed games can vary by integration behavior and scan timing. If you don’t see a title, install it in Steam/Epic and refresh.
Why can I see the game but it fails to launch from the Xbox app?
Common causes are a moved install directory, an outdated integration cache, or the game not being fully installed. Confirm it launches from Steam/Epic, then resync the Xbox library (or relink the account).
Is there any impact on performance?
Generally, the integration affects your library scan and metadata lookup more than runtime game performance. During scanning, you may notice increased disk or CPU activity, especially with large libraries.
Can I disconnect Steam/Epic from the Xbox app?
Yes. Go to Xbox app Settings → Connected accounts and remove the connection. Your Xbox app will stop pulling that library data after the refresh.
Bottom Line
The Xbox app on Windows showing games from Steam and Epic is a practical quality-of-life improvement: fewer launcher switches, faster searching, and a unified place to find what you want to play.
If something doesn’t appear or won’t launch, treat it like an integration cache or account mismatch—verify logins, confirm installs, refresh the library, and only then consider relinking.
