“Installation Stopped” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First identify whether you are installing from disc or downloading digitally, whether it is a new game or an update, and whether one title or several are affected. Then check Xbox service status, your connection, the download queue and available storage before trying more disruptive steps.
Start by identifying what is stopping
Note the Xbox One model, whether the game is on disc or digital, whether this is a new install or an update, the percentage or error code shown, and whether other games install normally. These details help distinguish a disc-specific problem from a broader service, network, storage or console issue. The message alone does not identify the cause.

11 checks and fixes, in order
1. Check Xbox service status
Look for a service disruption before changing console settings. An outage or service issue can interfere with downloads and updates, and local troubleshooting may not resolve it while the service is unavailable.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
2. Check whether the problem affects one game or several
Try another install or update if practical. If several titles fail, investigate console-wide conditions such as service access, network connectivity, queue conflicts or storage. If only one title fails repeatedly, focus on that game, its disc if applicable, or the publisher’s support information.
3. Confirm the install type and stage
A digital download or update depends on network access; a disc install has different failure modes. Record whether it stops at zero, later in the process or during an update. Do not use a disc-only procedure as a general fix for digital downloads.
4. Review the download and install queue
Open the console’s queue and check for paused, pending or failed items. Resolve or cancel a stuck attempt as appropriate, then retry the intended install. Menu wording may vary by software version.

- The new graphics engine showcasing every skull shattering, eye popping moment, brings you so close to the fight you can feel it
- And featuring a roster of new and returning Klassic Fighters, Mortal Kombat's best in class cinematic story mode continues the epic saga over 25 years in the making
5. Check available storage
Make room by removing games or apps you no longer need, or moving content to compatible external storage. Leave room for updates as well as the initial game installation; there is no universal free-space buffer established for every title.
6. For a disc install stuck at zero, consider the offline procedure
A secondary troubleshooting guide describes going offline, cancelling the failed attempt, installing the base game from disc, then reconnecting to download updates. This is a conditional suggestion for relevant disc-install cases—not a universal remedy for digital installs or updates. Check Xbox’s current disc-specific guidance before using it; the available official page does not expose its detailed steps here.
7. Restart or fully power down the console
Restart the Xbox One and retry. If the problem remains, a full shutdown followed by unplugging the console for a short period is another reversible step suggested by secondary guidance. It may clear temporary state, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Rank #3
- Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
- Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
- Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings.
8. Retry the installation after freeing space
Once storage is available, retry the install or update. An external USB drive can help when capacity is the blocker, but it will not repair a network interruption, service issue, damaged disc or corrupted game data. Verify compatibility, connection type and capacity for your console and the specific drive before buying.
9. Inspect and gently clean a game disc
If the install is from disc and the problem follows that disc, inspect its readable surface for dirt or damage. If needed, clean it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth, then retry. Persistent failure with one disc may indicate a disc or optical-drive issue; this step does not apply to digital installs.
10. Remove the partial install and reinstall one title
If only one game repeatedly fails, remove its incomplete installation and try again. For a disc game, use the disc during the retry; for a digital game, confirm the console can access the account and content needed to download it. A title-specific problem is also possible, so consult the game publisher if the clean retry fails.

- Neighbor AI learns your tactics and evolves
- Interactive environment
- Extremely tense, but family-friendly gameplay
11. Troubleshoot the network, then escalate
If digital installs or updates stall and other online functions are affected, check the console’s connection and troubleshoot the router or network. A secondary guide mentions manual DNS changes, but the available evidence does not establish DNS values as a proven Xbox fix; avoid changing them without current, relevant guidance.
If several games still fail after the basic checks, contact Xbox Support. If the failure is limited to one title, contact its publisher as well. Seek repair advice only if the symptoms persist and point to a console hardware problem.
Choose the next step by the symptoms
- Disc game stuck at zero: Check the disc and Xbox’s disc-install guidance; consider the offline method only for this relevant scenario.
- Digital games or updates stall: Check service status, the connection and queue before retrying.
- Several games fail: Prioritize console-wide checks—service, network, queue and storage—and contact Xbox Support if they do not resolve it.
- One game fails repeatedly: Retry that title cleanly, inspect its disc if applicable, and check with its publisher.
- Storage is nearly full: Remove or move content, then retry with room for both the game and its updates.
What this error does—and does not—tell you
The message does not prove that the hard drive, disc drive or any particular component has failed. No trustworthy success-rate or frequency figure is established for this error or for the suggested fixes. Treat the steps as a way to narrow the cause, not as guaranteed cures or a ranking of effectiveness.
