To hear Xbox One game audio through a wired headset, plug a compatible 3.5 mm headset into the headset jack on an Xbox Wireless Controller that has one. If your controller lacks that jack, a compatible Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter may provide a connection for a CTIA-standard 3.5 mm stereo headset. Wireless headsets use model-specific connection methods, so follow the headset maker’s Xbox One instructions.
Connect a wired headset to an Xbox One controller
- Check whether your controller has a 3.5 mm headset jack.
- Connect a compatible 3.5 mm headset to the jack. Microsoft lists its Xbox Stereo Headset as compatible with Xbox One and describes connecting it directly to the controller.
- Adjust headset volume and mute using its controls, if available. The Xbox Stereo Headset product page lists on-ear volume controls and a microphone mute function.
- If you want to change audio output or spatial-audio settings, open the console’s audio settings. Menu labels may differ from older instructions.
For chat, make sure the headset includes a microphone and that it is not muted. If game sound works but chat does not, check the headset’s inline controls and the console’s chat and game-audio balance settings.

If your controller has no 3.5 mm jack
Microsoft’s 2014 guidance describes the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter as a way to connect a compatible CTIA-standard 3.5 mm stereo headset to a controller without a headset jack. The adapter’s listed controls include game/chat balance, master volume, and microphone mute. This is historical product guidance; it does not confirm present availability or compatibility with every controller and adapter combination. See Xbox Wire’s adapter announcement.

Choose a connection that fits your headset
- Direct wired: Use a compatible 3.5 mm headset with a controller that has a headset jack.
- Adapter wired: If the controller lacks a jack, check whether the headset and controller work with the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter; Microsoft’s guidance specifies CTIA-standard 3.5 mm stereo headsets.
- Wireless: Check the exact headset model’s instructions for its Xbox One connection method. Wireless models do not all connect the same way, and a controller jack is not a universal wireless connection method.
Before choosing a headset, confirm the controller connection, whether the headset has a microphone if you need voice chat, and any wireless pairing or transmitter requirements. The cited Microsoft pages do not establish compatibility for every headset model.

Set up headphone spatial audio
Microsoft’s Xbox One guidance, published November 13, 2017, gave this route: Settings > All settings > Display & sound > Audio output > Headset format. From there, it described selecting Windows Sonic for Headphones or Dolby Atmos for Headphones. The route and availability details are dated; console menus and terms may have changed. See Microsoft’s 2017 spatial-audio article.
That article said Windows Sonic was available out of the box at the time. It described Dolby Atmos for Headphones as requiring Dolby Access and offering a purchase or 30-day trial at publication; those terms are not a guarantee of current pricing or availability. Microsoft’s current Xbox Stereo Headset page lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X support for that headset, while noting that Dolby Atmos and DTS:X may require additional purchases, apps, and supported hardware. Check the requirements for the particular headset and format. Spatial-audio support alone does not guarantee the same effect in every game.

Troubleshoot missing sound or microphone audio
- No game audio: Confirm that the plug is fully seated in the controller jack or compatible adapter, then check headset volume and console audio settings.
- No microphone input: Check the headset’s mute switch and, if using an adapter, its microphone-mute control. Confirm the headset has a microphone and is compatible with the connection you are using.
- Chat is too quiet or game audio dominates: Adjust chat/game balance using the available console or adapter controls.
- Wireless headset will not connect: Follow the model-specific pairing or transmitter instructions rather than assuming it connects through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack.
