Microsoft’s July 28, 2025 Xbox update added “Stream your own game” to the Xbox PC app. At launch, Game Pass Ultimate members in the 28 countries supported by Xbox Cloud Gaming could stream more than 250 supported Xbox games they already owned—including some console-only titles—without downloading a Windows version. The catalog and subscription rules later changed, so the July figures are launch history rather than today’s limits.
What Microsoft announced in July 2025
The key change was different from ordinary Game Pass cloud play. Instead of limiting streaming to games included in a subscription catalog, Microsoft let eligible members stream certain games attached to their own Xbox account, even when those games were not currently included with Game Pass. Microsoft described the rollout in its July 28 Xbox Wire update.
- Launch catalog: more than 250 supported owned games.
- Launch plan: Game Pass Ultimate.
- Launch region: the 28 countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming was available.
- Launch device: the Xbox app on a Windows PC; a console was not required.
This did not convert every Xbox purchase into a PC license. Microsoft had to enable each title for cloud play, and licensing, edition, platform and regional restrictions still applied.
How “Stream your own game” differs from other Xbox options

A console-only game can therefore be playable through cloud streaming without becoming installable on Windows.

Who could use it at launch?
General rollout
For the July 28 rollout, users needed Game Pass Ultimate, an eligible owned game and an account in a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming country. Ownership had to be associated with the Microsoft/Xbox account used in the app.
Earlier Insider access
Microsoft first tested the feature with Xbox Insiders in the PC Gaming Preview. The July 15 announcement required both Insider participation and Game Pass Ultimate, and described a catalog of more than 250 supported games. The launch details are documented in Microsoft’s Insider announcement.
What “owned” does and does not mean
- A purchased Xbox license may qualify when Microsoft has enabled that title for cloud streaming.
- Having access through Game Pass is not automatically the same as owning the game for this feature.
- A purchase from another PC storefront may not create an Xbox entitlement.
- Console and PC rights can be separate.
- Disc ownership, bundles, editions and downloadable content can behave differently from a digital base-game license.
How to stream an owned game in the Xbox PC app
The documented launch-era route was:
- Open the Xbox app on a Windows PC.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game and holds the qualifying subscription.
- Open Cloud Gaming.
- Find the Stream your own game catalog.
- Select a supported title.
- Choose the play or stream command; the game starts without a local download.
Microsoft may move labels or sections in later app builds, so treat those names as the July 2025 path rather than a promise about the current interface.

Which games were included?
The launch list was curated, not a complete mirror of an Xbox library. Microsoft cited Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Mafia: Definitive Edition, The Callisto Protocol, Assassin’s Creed Unity and PGA Tour 2K25 as examples. Its July update also listed additions including Aragami 2, Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, Rubber Bandits, Rugby League 26, Solasta: Crown of the Magister, Spelunky 2, Streets of Rage 4, Tetris Effect Connected, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, Ultimate Custom Night, Visage, Wheel World and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
Availability can change by title, edition, country and licensing agreement. A game’s appearance in your Xbox ownership history is not enough to guarantee a stream button.
The other July Xbox app changes
Cloud-playable Library filtering and cross-device history
Xbox Insiders received a Library filter for cloud playable console games. Microsoft also showed recent play across Xbox consoles, PCs and Windows handhelds; on Home, the history appeared at the end of the Jump back in row. This was an Insider preview, not a universal feature promised to every user on July 28. Details are in Microsoft’s play-history announcement.

Microsoft Rewards tracking
In selected markets, the Xbox PC app began showing progress toward Microsoft Rewards earned through PC gaming. The rollout required a Microsoft account and applied to users aged 18 or older. Points had to be claimed before entering the Rewards balance, and Microsoft’s program terms controlled eligibility. It was not a guaranteed payment for every game session.
Xbox Play Anywhere additions
The update highlighted more than 100 games added to the Xbox Play Anywhere collection during 2025 up to that point. Play Anywhere is separate from cloud streaming: it provides compatible console and Windows versions from one participating purchase, while “Stream your own game” runs an eligible title remotely.

Retro Classics
Microsoft also announced additional Retro Classics titles through Xbox and Antstream Arcade, including Caesar, Conquests of Camelot, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Hard Head, Okie Dokie, Skate Boardin’ and Skeleton+. Microsoft said the broader collection was expected to grow beyond 100 titles.

What changed after the July announcement?
The July 2025 figure of more than 250 games is now dated. In an April 30, 2026 Xbox update, Microsoft said the owned-game cloud catalog had grown to more than 1,000 games and described streaming availability for Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate subscribers on supported devices.
Those later statements do not mean every owned game works on every device or in every country. Subscription benefits, title support and regional availability can still differ, and the catalog remains subject to change.

Streaming is a good fit when you want to:
- Avoid a large download or preserve SSD space.
- Play a console-only game on a Windows laptop or handheld.
- Start quickly on hardware that cannot install the native title.
- Move between Xbox, PC and handheld play without carrying local files.
A local installation is better when you need:
- Offline access.
- Consistently low input latency for competitive games.
- Mods, maximum image-quality control or PC-specific settings.
- Predictable performance despite an unreliable connection or data cap.
Cloud quality depends on connection stability, latency, Wi-Fi congestion, Microsoft’s regional infrastructure and controller responsiveness. Microsoft’s July announcement did not establish one universal minimum internet-speed number.

If your game does not appear or will not start

Updating or restarting the Xbox app can resolve a temporary display problem, but it cannot remove a licensing, regional or catalog restriction. Where supported, the Xbox Cloud Gaming browser route can provide an alternative way to test access.
Is Game Pass worth it for this feature?
It is a sensible subscription choice if you want cloud access to supported Xbox purchases, including some console-only games, and you have reliable internet and a compatible controller. It is a poor fit if your priority is offline play, native PC versions, mods or guaranteed access to every game in your Xbox library. Microsoft lists current plans and availability at xbox.com/xbox-game-pass; check the live page because tier benefits can change.
