For Xbox Series X, the key buying check is whether a monitor accepts 4K at 120Hz over HDMI—not simply whether its advertised refresh rate is high. A 4K display with HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and compatible variable refresh rate (VRR) support is a strong fit for that target. If you are willing to trade resolution or HDR performance for a lower-cost option, there are worthwhile alternatives.
Xbox monitor recommendations at a glance
RTINGS’ recommendations, updated through September 16, 2026, are aimed at U.S. availability. Treat them as a current shortlist, not a permanent or worldwide ranking. The right choice depends on the Xbox signals you want, room lighting, OLED trade-offs, price and whether you will also use the monitor with a high-refresh-rate PC.

| Use case | Monitor | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Premium 27-inch 4K OLED | ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM | RTINGS’ top Xbox Series X pick. It accepts the console’s 4K/120Hz signal, but its 240Hz maximum is beyond what Xbox can fully use. Consider whether OLED and PC use justify the premium. RTINGS recommendations |
| Upper mid-range 27-inch 4K OLED | Dell Alienware AW2725Q | RTINGS’ upper mid-range option, with HDMI 2.1 and Xbox Dolby Vision support. Its glossy screen and OLED image can suit some setups, but room lighting and static-image use matter. RTINGS recommendations; RTINGS review |
| Mid-range 4K LCD | Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx | RTINGS says it accepts 4K up to 120Hz over HDMI 2.1, but does not support Dolby Vision. Compare its current price with OLED options and verify the exact regional model. RTINGS recommendations |
| Budget 1440p | ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS | RTINGS reports Xbox VRR support and good motion handling. It does not accept 4K at 120Hz, and its HDR picture is washed out, so the lower-cost route involves clear image-quality compromises. RTINGS recommendations |
What Xbox Series X can use from a monitor
Resolution and refresh rate
Xbox Series X supports gaming at up to 4K and 120Hz over HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. To use that signal, the monitor must support 4K/120Hz specifically through its HDMI input; a high maximum refresh rate listed for PC use does not establish that it accepts the Xbox signal. A monitor rated for 240Hz does not make the console output 240 frames per second.

VRR can reduce tearing on supported signals, but compatibility depends on the monitor’s input and signal combinations. RTINGS checks which resolutions and refresh rates work with HDR and VRR rather than inferring console support from a maximum PC refresh rate. Some monitors also need a setting enabled to provide full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. Before buying, confirm the exact model’s tested Xbox signals and follow its setup instructions. RTINGS says Xbox supports HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync. That can let some FreeSync monitors without HDMI Forum VRR work with Xbox VRR; check the specific monitor rather than assuming all VRR labels mean the same thing. HDR support also varies by model and signal. For example, RTINGS lists Xbox Dolby Vision support for the Dell AW2725Q but says the Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx does not support Dolby Vision. Ultrawide displays
Xbox Series X|S does not support ultrawide gaming. A 21:9 monitor will show side bars rather than expand the game’s field of view, so choose an ultrawide for other uses only if that trade-off works for you. RTINGS console compatibility methodology

How to choose among the shortlist
- Set your resolution target. Choose 4K if detail is a priority and you want the option to receive the Xbox’s 4K/120Hz signal. A 1440p monitor can lower the cost, but it will not provide that 4K signal.
- Verify the HDMI input’s Xbox support. Look for explicit 4K/120Hz input support and check the model’s Xbox compatibility, HDR and VRR behavior. Do not treat a PC refresh-rate maximum as proof.
- Decide whether OLED suits the room and usage. OLED can deliver strong picture quality, but the AW2725Q review notes raised blacks and less saturated colors in bright rooms, plus a burn-in risk if static elements stay onscreen for long periods. RTINGS AW2725Q review
- Compare HDR format and image trade-offs. If Dolby Vision matters, distinguish models that support it from those that do not. If you choose the budget 1440p ASUS, account for its washed-out HDR presentation.
- Factor in PC use and price. A monitor’s refresh rate above 120Hz may be useful with a compatible PC, but Xbox cannot fully use the 240Hz ceiling of the PG27UCDM. Check current local pricing and the exact regional SKU before purchase.
Why model-level compatibility checks matter
RTINGS’ method tests a console on the monitor’s highest-bandwidth HDMI input, checks which signals appear in the console settings, and records which combinations support HDR and VRR. That kind of model-specific check is more useful than relying on a broad feature label or a monitor’s headline PC specification. Because recommendations and availability change, confirm the exact model and region before buying. RTINGS compatibility methodology; RTINGS Xbox Series X recommendations
