Choose the subscription that matches the hardware you already use and the games you actually want to play. Xbox Game Pass stands out for eligible day-one releases and access across supported devices; PlayStation Plus Extra is the PlayStation downloadable-catalog tier, while Premium adds classics, trials, and streaming. Neither service is a universal winner, and catalog access is not permanent ownership.
Start with your platform and the games you want
These are subscriptions to different ecosystems, not interchangeable libraries. Xbox lists access through Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, and cloud streaming across eligible plans and supported devices. PlayStation Plus is centered on PS4 and PS5; Premium also supports PC streaming and selected streaming to PS5 or PlayStation Portal. A feature’s availability depends on the plan, region, hardware, and game. Check the current Xbox plan details and PlayStation’s US plan details, then look up the specific games you expect to play.

Headcount claims are not a like-for-like measure of library size. In pages reviewed October 4, 2026, Xbox advertised 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate, and 300+ PC games for PC Game Pass. These are vendor-advertised figures, not an independent count of distinct games. Sony described the Extra and Premium catalogs as “hundreds of games” without giving a comparable exact total. Those descriptions do not establish which service has the larger or better library.

What each subscription tier is for
Plan names and benefits do not map one-to-one. Compare the feature you need rather than assuming the top tier of one service is equivalent to the top tier of the other.

Compare the costs in your own market
On October 4, 2026, the PlayStation US storefront displayed the following prices. They are US storefront prices observed on that date, not global prices or a guarantee of future rates.
| PlayStation Plus tier | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
The Xbox plan page reviewed did not expose stable standard tier prices, so there is no reliable Xbox figure to compare here. Check the Xbox purchase page for the offer available to your account and region. Promotions may be limited by time, geography, or new-subscriber eligibility, and may convert to the then-current recurring price unless canceled.

PlayStation says its service continues until canceled and that prices and features can vary. Xbox also says recurring payments continue unless canceled.
Know what you can play, and for how long
Library games are access, not ownership
Xbox subscribers can access a library game until the subscription expires or that game leaves the library. Titles, counts, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. On PlayStation, monthly games remain available while membership is active; some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have announced end dates. A game you claimed or downloaded through a subscription should not be treated as a permanent purchase.

PlayStation’s US page says that from January 2026 PS4 games will be added to the catalog only intermittently. That is a policy about the frequency of additions, not a promise that no PS4 games will appear.
Downloads and streaming have different requirements
PlayStation Extra is the natural tier to investigate if you want to download catalog games on a compatible console. PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PS5. PlayStation Premium streaming is available only for eligible titles and supported devices and regions; Sony’s US materials give a broadband minimum of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p. PC streaming also has age, PC, and controller requirements. Check Sony’s PC streaming setup guidance and its streaming availability information before choosing Premium for a particular device.

Xbox cloud gaming likewise depends on supported devices and regions, and plan-specific monthly limits may apply. Do not assume that every Game Pass tier includes cloud play or the same streaming allowance; check the current Xbox plan and device details.
Online multiplayer may change which tier is enough
Check the online requirement for the particular game, rather than paying for a higher tier by default. Sony says most purchased PlayStation games with online modes require Plus, while most free-to-play titles do not. Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player. If your main reason for subscribing is online play, verify the rule for your game and platform before comparing catalog tiers.

A practical way to choose
- Start with your hardware. If you mainly play on Xbox or Windows PC, compare the Xbox plans; if you play on PS4 or PS5, compare PlayStation Plus tiers. Treat streaming to another device as an extra only after checking that device, region, and game.
- Make a short list of wanted games. Look for those titles in the current official catalog, and note whether each is downloadable, streamable, or available only through another benefit.
- Decide how much release timing matters. Ultimate includes eligible Xbox day-one releases subject to exclusions and terms; Premium’s Xbox-published titles arrive within 12 months of launch. The reviewed PlayStation tier page describes monthly games and catalog additions, not an equivalent general day-one promise.
- Compare the tier that covers your actual use. Include bundled benefits only if you will use them. On PlayStation, choose Premium over Extra only if classics, trials, or streaming matter to you; if you mainly want the downloadable catalog, start with Extra.
- Check the local checkout price and billing period. Confirm currency, renewal price, offer eligibility, and cancellation terms on the live purchase page before subscribing.
Which one fits which player?
- Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if you use Xbox or other supported devices, value eligible day-one releases, and expect to use its included benefits.
- Choose PC Game Pass if your library is PC-focused and its PC catalog and included benefits fit; do not select it expecting cloud gaming.
- Choose PlayStation Plus Extra if you play on PlayStation and want its downloadable Game Catalog.
- Choose PlayStation Plus Premium if you also expect to use the Classics Catalog, trials, or supported cloud streaming.
- Compare the lowest useful tiers if your priority is online multiplayer or monthly games rather than a large catalog. Check whether your free-to-play games require membership.
