Short answer: buying is usually cheaper when your backlog is a short list of games you want to keep permanently. Game Pass can be cheaper when several of your target games are included in the correct catalog and you can finish them during a small number of billed months. The result depends on your plan, platform, region, current sale prices, catalog changes and how long you need access.
The calculations below use Xbox’s United States prices checked October 13, 2026. Prices, games, promotions and features differ by region and can change, so verify each title and the plan terms immediately before paying.

The answer in one minute
Compare two totals for the exact games you expect to play:
- Buying total: add the current purchase price of every backlog title you intend to own.
- Game Pass total: multiply the monthly price of the plan that actually includes those titles on your platform by the number of billed months you need.
If the buying total is lower, buy the games. If the subscription total is lower and you are comfortable losing access when the subscription ends, Game Pass is the less expensive way to play that group. Do not compare your backlog with the largest catalog number or with the cheapest tier in isolation: a title must be included in your region, tier and platform at the time you play it.

Game Pass prices and catalog sizes to use in the calculation
Xbox’s US plan page listed these recurring monthly prices and catalog counts on October 13, 2026:
| Plan | US monthly price | Advertised catalog size | What the number means for your calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 | 50+ games | Use this price only if the games you want and the features you need are available in Essential for your platform and region. |
| Premium | $14.99 | 200+ games | The larger catalog does not guarantee that a particular indie game is included when you are ready to play it. |
| Ultimate | $22.99 | 500+ games | Compare this higher price only when its catalog or included benefits are relevant to your backlog. |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | 300+ games for PC | This is the relevant reference for a PC-only player; console availability and benefits are not interchangeable. |
These are current US reference figures, not worldwide prices. Xbox says pricing, catalog titles, features and availability vary by region, plan, platform and time. A promotion can reduce the first bill but may renew at the then-current rate unless you cancel.
How to calculate your own break-even point
1. Make a title-level backlog list
Write down only the games you realistically expect to start and finish or substantially play in the period you are measuring. Separate a “must play soon” list from a larger wish list. A subscription is charged for time, so games that remain indefinitely in the wish list should not be counted as a benefit.

For each game, verify the current listing for your country, platform and exact Game Pass tier. Record whether it is included now, whether it is available only on another platform, and whether an announced removal date or other access condition applies. The advertised catalog total is only a count; it is not evidence that your particular backlog is covered.
3. Record the individual purchase price
Use the current Microsoft Store price for the edition you would actually buy. Record a legitimate sale price only if the sale is live and you would have bought during that window. Xbox says subscribers can receive discounts on selected games and add-ons, so include a member discount only after confirming the exact offer for the exact title. Do not use an assumed “average indie price.”
4. Estimate billed months, not playing hours
Count the calendar months in which you must retain access. A player who finishes four games in one month has a different result from a player who takes four months with the same list. Include the month in which you start and any extra month needed for a slow, interrupted or multiplayer backlog. If a title leaves the catalog before you finish, your estimate must account for buying it or changing plans.
5. Apply the two formulas
Total purchase cost = sum of the current prices of the specific titles you intend to buy.

Total subscription cost = monthly plan price × number of billed months needed.
Choose the plan that includes the titles and benefits you will use. Selecting a cheaper tier that excludes half your list produces a misleading comparison.
Worked arithmetic examples (illustrative, not an indie-price average)
The examples below show the method with deliberately stated assumptions. They are not a claim about typical indie pricing.
Two games in one month
Suppose two games you want are each listed at $19.99, so buying costs $39.98. One month of Essential costs $9.99, Premium $14.99, Ultimate $22.99 or PC Game Pass $13.99. If both games are included in the plan that matches your platform, one month of any of those plans is cheaper in cash terms. Buying is still the option that leaves you with permanent access after the month ends.

Six games over three months
Suppose six included games would otherwise cost $14.99 each. The purchase total is $89.94. Three billed months cost $29.97 on Essential, $44.97 on Premium, $68.97 on Ultimate or $41.97 on PC Game Pass. The subscription has the lower immediate cost in every one of these hypothetical cases, but only while the games remain included and only if the player actually uses the three months.
A single expensive purchase
The Microsoft Store’s dynamic Game Pass-filtered listing showed 481 items when crawled about a month before October 13, 2026, and displayed one separately listed game at $39.99. That listing is not an indie-only sample and cannot establish a representative price. It does illustrate why one high-priced purchase can exceed one month of a lower-priced plan, while several months of an unused subscription can quickly exceed the same purchase.
How many games must you play for Game Pass to be worth it?
There is no single game count because prices and play time vary. A useful first screen is to divide the monthly plan price by the amount you would otherwise pay for one game, then round up. The table uses hypothetical purchase prices solely to demonstrate the arithmetic:

| Plan | Monthly cost | At $10 per game | At $15 per game | At $20 per game | At $25 per game |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Premium | $14.99 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Ultimate | $22.99 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
This one-month screen is incomplete if you would need multiple months. For example, two months of Ultimate costs $45.98; at a hypothetical $15 purchase price, you would need four games to exceed that cost, not two. Use monthly price × months ÷ alternative purchase price, then round up. Replace the hypothetical price with each game’s actual current price for a reliable result.

Buying gives you a different kind of value
Access after cancellation
Purchased games remain associated with your account after Game Pass ends, subject to the store license and any platform requirements. Game Pass games are a subscription benefit: when the subscription expires, you generally lose the included access unless you purchase the title or renew a plan that includes it. If permanent replay, offline access after the subscription or a long-term family library matters to you, assign that value to buying even when one month of Game Pass is cheaper.
Freedom to play slowly
A purchase does not create a monthly deadline. You can pause between games, return years later and wait for a sale without paying for the intervening months. Game Pass is financially strongest when your play schedule is concentrated; it becomes less attractive when one short game stretches across several billing cycles.
Resale and account restrictions
Digital purchases are not the same as transferable physical discs, and the comparison should use the license terms shown at checkout. Do not assume that a subscription or a digital purchase can be moved to another account.
Catalog match matters more than catalog size
A plan advertising 50+, 200+, 300+ or 500+ games can still be a poor match for a specific backlog. Before subscribing, make a small table with one row per target title and these columns:
- Exact game and edition.
- Platform you will use.
- Country or region of the account.
- Plan tier that currently includes it.
- Current purchase price.
- Expected month of play.
- Any announced removal, access or online requirement.
If a title is missing, treat it as a purchase in the calculation rather than silently counting it as included. If several titles require different tiers, price the plan that covers the whole period or split the backlog into a subscription group and a purchase group.
Sales and member discounts can change the winner
Compare the price you can actually obtain, not a permanent list price you would never pay. A sale may make buying cheaper than a month of Game Pass for one or two games. Conversely, a confirmed subscriber discount may make it sensible to use Game Pass for a month, buy a favorite at the discounted price and then cancel.

Keep the timing honest:
- Do not assume a sale will still be active when you are ready to buy.
- Do not count a discount unless the current listing shows that you qualify.
- Do not treat a first-month promotion as the ongoing monthly price.
- Include the full number of billed months if your play plan crosses a renewal date.
Plan features can justify a higher price, but only if you use them
The game list is not the only difference between tiers. Depending on the plan and region, Game Pass may include platform benefits, online features, cloud gaming or selected discounts. Assign value only to benefits you would otherwise pay for or actively use. A benefit you never use should not rescue an otherwise expensive subscription calculation.
Cloud gaming allocation change in November 2026
In a September 3, 2026 Team Xbox announcement, Xbox said Game Pass plans would begin including monthly cloud-gaming hour allocations in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. Xbox said the change was expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. The announcement said pricing and details for buying additional hours would be provided before the change took effect; it did not state an additional-hour price. Do not add an assumed cloud-hour charge to your comparison, and do not value the allocation if you will play locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen buying is usually the better fit
- Your backlog contains one to three specific games and you expect to play them over several months.
- The games are not in the same Game Pass catalog, tier or platform.
- You want to replay them after canceling.
- Current sale prices make the combined purchase total lower than the subscription months you would need.
- You are likely to forget to cancel before renewal.
In these cases, calculate the purchase total first and treat Game Pass as an optional time-limited rental, not as a default bargain.
When Game Pass is usually the better fit
- Several games you genuinely intend to play are included now in one suitable plan.
- You can finish or substantially play them in one or two billed months.
- You value trying games you might not buy individually.
- You will use included features such as cloud gaming or other plan benefits.
- The plan’s confirmed member discounts reduce the cost of titles you decide to keep.
In this case, set a start date, a finish date and a cancellation reminder. The financial advantage depends on actually using the concentrated subscription window.
Cancellation and renewal: the cost many comparisons miss
Game Pass is recurring. Xbox requires you to cancel in the account or on the console before the next billing date to stop future charges. Check the next billing date immediately after subscribing, then cancel or turn off recurring billing in the subscription-management screen before that date. Keep the confirmation for your records and verify that access terms shown after cancellation match what you expect.
A one-month calculation becomes a two-month calculation if you miss the renewal. At the October 13, 2026 US prices, one missed renewal adds $9.99, $14.99, $22.99 or $13.99 depending on the plan. That extra charge can erase the apparent saving from a small backlog.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the biggest catalog number as proof of savings
Fix: check every intended title, platform, tier and region. A catalog count is not a match percentage for your backlog.

Comparing a purchase with only the first promotional month
Fix: use the recurring price that applies after the promotion and count every billed month through completion.
Ignoring access after cancellation
Fix: decide whether permanent access has value to you. If it does, compare a purchase with the entire subscription period, not just the first bill.
Using an invented indie average
Fix: enter the actual current prices of the titles on your list. The dynamic Microsoft Store listing is not an indie-only, representative price survey, and no official indie-game average establishes a typical outcome.

A practical decision worksheet
- List the five to ten titles you are most likely to play next.
- Mark each title as included, not included or uncertain in the relevant plan; resolve every uncertain row before subscribing.
- Write the current individual price and any confirmed sale or member discount beside each title.
- Estimate the number of billed months, including the month in which you will cancel.
- Multiply the plan price by that month count.
- Add the prices of titles that are not included or that you want to own permanently.
- Compare the combined figure with buying the whole list.
- Choose the option that wins on both money and access rights, then set a renewal reminder if you subscribe.
Re-run the worksheet if a title leaves the catalog, a sale ends, your platform changes or your completion schedule slips.
Bottom line for a backlog decision
There is no universal winner. For a small, slow-moving list, buying the specific indie games—especially during a real sale—usually costs less over time and preserves access. For a concentrated burst of several included games, Game Pass can deliver lower short-term cost, provided you choose the correct tier and platform and cancel before an unwanted renewal. Use the October 13, 2026 US prices as a starting point, verify the live catalog and prices for your region, and let your own titles and months—not the headline catalog size—decide.
