Xbox Game Pass Essential vs Premium vs Ultimate: Which Plan Should You Choose?

Core and Standard have become Essential and Premium. Compare the current Xbox Game Pass tiers, their game libraries, cloud access, benefits, and U.S. price references.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most players, Essential is the pick for console multiplayer and a smaller game library, Premium suits players who want a much larger catalog across devices, and Ultimate is for people who will use its broader library, eligible day-one releases, and expanded benefits. Xbox has renamed the tiers: the title’s “Core” corresponds to today’s Essential, and “Standard” to Premium. This comparison is U.S.-oriented; local pricing and availability can differ.

What changed: Core and Standard are now Essential and Premium

Xbox’s current plan comparison uses the names Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, rather than Core and Standard. The current page establishes the present labels and features, but does not document each subscriber’s account-specific migration history. See Xbox’s current plan comparison for the live options in your region.

Compare the three plans

Current plan (former name) Game selection Cloud gaming Price reference Best fit
Essential (Core) 50+ games, according to Xbox’s December 2025 guide; catalog varies over time, by region, plan, and platform. Included, subject to supported devices, regions, and games. As low as $10/month, according to Xbox in 2025; this is a starting price, not a guaranteed regular rate. Console players who primarily want online multiplayer and a smaller included selection.
Premium (Standard) 200+ games, according to Xbox’s December 2025 guide; catalog varies. Included, subject to supported devices, regions, and games. $14.99/month, according to Xbox in 2025. Players who want a larger selection across console, PC, and supported devices without paying for Ultimate’s additional benefits.
Ultimate 500+ games on Xbox’s comparison page, accessed October 4, 2026; catalog varies. Included; experience and availability depend on device, region, and game. $22.99/month in the U.S. from April 21, 2026; Xbox says prices may vary by region. Players who will use the broader library and benefits, including eligible day-one releases.

Xbox cautions that titles, counts, features, and availability change and vary by region, plan, and platform. Check the live comparison and catalog for a particular game rather than assuming it will remain included.

Choose by what you actually play

Choose Essential if multiplayer is the main reason you subscribe

Essential includes online console multiplayer for paid games and a smaller library. If you only want to play free-to-play games online, Xbox says those games do not require a paid plan for multiplayer; you may not need a subscription for that purpose.

Choose Premium for more games across devices

Premium includes everything in Essential and gives access to 200+ games across console, PC, and supported devices, according to Xbox’s December 2025 cloud gaming guide. It is the sensible middle option if you want a bigger choice of games but do not need Ultimate’s day-one releases or bundled benefits.

Choose Ultimate when you will use its extras

Ultimate is the highest tier in this comparison, with 500+ games on Xbox’s current plan page and day-one play for eligible releases. That is not a promise that every publisher or franchise will arrive on day one. In an April 21, 2026 update, Xbox said future Call of Duty titles would no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; they would be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. Read Xbox’s price and availability update for that policy change.

Do you need Ultimate for cloud gaming?

No. Xbox’s December 2025 guide lists cloud gaming with Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. The tier decision should therefore depend on the games and other benefits you want, not on an assumption that cloud play is exclusive to Ultimate. Cloud gaming requires a supported device, region, and game; Xbox also describes a variety of controllers and other input methods, without establishing that any particular controller is required or works with every setup. Check device and game compatibility before buying accessories or subscribing for cloud play.

Is Premium worth the extra cost over Essential?

Use the prices as dated U.S. reference points, not guaranteed rates: Xbox listed Essential as low as $10/month and Premium at $14.99/month in 2025. The Premium price difference is worthwhile if you regularly play from its broader catalog or across its supported devices. If online console multiplayer is the main benefit you need, Essential may be enough. Compare the recurring renewal amount shown in your account with how often you will use the included games and features; promotions, prices, and catalogs can change.

Three checks before subscribing

  1. Find your must-play game. Confirm that it is currently in the catalog for your region, plan, and device. A game not included with Game Pass may need to be purchased separately.
  2. Match the plan to your devices. Distinguish console, Windows PC, handheld, and cloud play; plan benefits and cloud availability depend on supported devices and regions.
  3. Compare recurring value. Check the renewal price shown for your account and weigh it against the multiplayer access, catalog, cloud use, and other benefits you will actually use.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
