Xbox’s current US Free Play Days page lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate members as eligible to try selected games for a limited time. The page now calls the lower tier Essential; Core is the older name that explains the wording in the title.
Does Game Pass Core or Essential include Free Play Days?
Yes. The current US offer page includes Essential in its eligibility list, alongside Premium and Ultimate. Xbox says members can try selected games free for a limited time, and advises checking back weekly for new games. That means eligibility is tied to membership, but the featured games change; it is not a permanent, fixed catalog. See Xbox’s Free Play Days page for the current selection and terms.

The name has changed since the older Core wording. Xbox’s legacy Xbox Live Gold page says Gold became Game Pass Core and mentions select Free Play Days. The current US Free Play Days page uses Essential instead. So, for a current US answer, use Essential as the plan label and treat Core as historical terminology—not as proof that Xbox currently sells a plan under that name. See Xbox’s legacy Xbox Live Gold page.

Which tier should you choose?
Choose Essential if Free Play Days is the deciding factor
Essential appears in the current eligibility list, so the offer alone is not a reason to pay for Ultimate. Check the Free Play Days page for the featured titles and their limited-time availability before subscribing or deciding whether to keep a plan.
Choose Ultimate only for benefits you will use
Ultimate may suit you if its current library, platform access, cloud play, or other included services are worth the additional cost to you. Compare those features against the plan you already have and the devices you use. The eligibility listing itself does not make Ultimate necessary for Free Play Days.
