For Xbox owners, free-to-play games can avoid a subscription altogether; PlayStation owners can compare PlayStation Plus plans; and players who stick to a few titles may prefer buying them on sale. These options are not interchangeable: platform, multiplayer needs, library turnover, and cloud availability all matter.

| Option | Platform and cost | What you get | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-play games | Xbox; no subscription fee for online multiplayer in free-to-play games | Play supported free-to-play titles online. Selected games can also be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. | Does not include paid Game Pass catalog games. Cloud access depends on region, device, and game. |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | PlayStation; US prices displayed October 7, 2026: $10.99 monthly, $27.99 per three months, or $79.99 per 12 months | Monthly games, console online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play. | It is not a large on-demand game catalog. Monthly games and multiplayer are useful only if they match your needs. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | PlayStation; US prices displayed October 7, 2026: $16.99 monthly, $43.99 per three months, or $134.99 per 12 months | Essential benefits plus a rotating catalog of hundreds of downloadable games and Ubisoft+ Classics. | Catalog games can leave, and access requires an active membership. Content varies over time. |
| Buy selected games individually | Xbox, PlayStation, or PC storefronts; cost depends on the titles and current prices | You pay for games you choose instead of subscribing to a broad rotating library. | Whether it costs less depends on sale prices and how many games you actually play; there is no universal break-even point. |
What should you choose instead of Game Pass?
Choose free-to-play if you mainly want a few online games on Xbox
Xbox says online multiplayer access for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. That makes games in this category a straightforward way to play online without paying for Game Pass. It does not unlock paid games in the Game Pass catalog. Xbox also says selected free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions; see its cloud gaming information for availability and requirements.
Choose PlayStation Plus Essential if you need PlayStation multiplayer or monthly games
Essential is relevant to PlayStation owners, not a replacement for Xbox access. Sony lists monthly games, online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play as plan benefits. The US prices displayed on October 7, 2026 were $10.99 per month, $27.99 per three months, and $79.99 per 12 months. Sony’s PlayStation Plus plan page is the place to confirm current pricing and regional terms.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Essential is not the plan to pick if the main reason you subscribe is browsing a large on-demand catalog: Sony describes that catalog as an Extra benefit. Consider the plan for the multiplayer or monthly games you will use, rather than assuming its benefits match Game Pass.
Choose PlayStation Plus Extra if you play broadly on PlayStation
Extra includes Essential benefits and Sony’s Game Catalog, described as hundreds of games with new titles added regularly; Ubisoft+ Classics is also listed. The US prices displayed on October 7, 2026 were $16.99 per month, $43.99 per three months, and $134.99 per 12 months. This can suit someone who plays a range of titles on PlayStation, but it is a separate platform service rather than a way to access Xbox games.

The catalog is not a permanent collection of owned games. Sony says availability depends on plan and time, titles may have removal dates, and an active membership is required to play catalog games. Sony also notes that from January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently. Check the current catalog for the games you want before subscribing, and do not assume a title will remain throughout your membership.

Buy a short list of games if you replay favorites or play selectively
If you return to a small number of games and do not use a broad catalog, compare the actual purchase prices of those games—including sale prices—with the subscription cost for the period you would play. Buying individually avoids relying on a rotating catalog, but it is not automatically cheaper: the result depends on the titles, discounts, and your play habits. Sony says Essential includes PlayStation Store discounts, which may be relevant when comparing a PlayStation purchase with a subscription.

Check the real cost beyond the advertised plan
A useful comparison is not just monthly price. Ask what you need from the service and what happens to your access if you stop paying.
- Platform: A PlayStation Plus membership does not substitute for Xbox access. Compare services available on the console or PC you actually use.
- Recurring billing: Monthly and longer-term subscriptions have different outlays. Check the renewal period and current local price before subscribing.
- Ownership and retention: Purchased games are not the same as subscription-catalog access. Catalog titles can rotate out, and Sony requires an active membership for Extra catalog access.
- Multiplayer: If online play is the reason you pay, verify whether the specific games and platform require a membership. Xbox says its free-to-play games are an exception to paid multiplayer access.
- Your actual play pattern: A large library is useful only if you play enough included games to justify the recurring cost. A short list makes individual purchase prices worth checking.
Cloud gaming has separate requirements and limits
Xbox cloud gaming
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select smart TVs, Fire TV, and select VR headsets among supported devices. Availability depends on a supported region. Xbox lists a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. For most games, a compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB is required, while selected games offer touch controls. Subscription games require an active eligible subscription; selected free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account. Requirements and supported games are listed in the Xbox cloud gaming FAQ.

Check the plan page and FAQ for eligible games, device support, and regional availability before treating cloud access as part of the value you will receive.

Xbox’s announced monthly cloud-hour limits
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 3, 2026, Xbox said that beginning in November 2026, monthly cloud gaming time would be 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and 5 hours for Essential. Xbox also said subscribers could buy additional time and announced planned pay-as-you-go access for people without Game Pass to stream eligible games they own; the announcement did not yet give pricing and availability details for those options. Because the change was scheduled for after the announcement, verify the current implementation and terms in Xbox Wire’s September 3, 2026 update before relying on those limits or options.

Make the decision from your games, not the headline price
- Start with your platform. Compare Xbox options for Xbox play and PlayStation Plus only if you play on PlayStation.
- Write down the games you expect to play. If they are free-to-play Xbox titles, you may not need a subscription for online multiplayer. If they are in a rotating catalog, check whether they are currently available.
- Compare the time you will use the service. For a broad, frequently used catalog, a subscription may make sense. For a short list, compare purchase prices and sales against the subscription outlay for the same period.
- Check the terms that affect your use. Confirm multiplayer requirements, catalog removal and membership rules, region support, cloud device and connection needs, and any current cloud-hour limits.
- Recheck local pricing before paying. The Sony figures in this article are US prices displayed on October 7, 2026; prices and catalogs can change.
