FPS is how many frames a game renders each second; Hz is how many times a screen can refresh each second. Xbox FPS Boost can raise frame rates in selected backward-compatible games on Xbox Series X|S, but it does not make every game run at 120 FPS. To see 120 FPS, the game and the display path must both support it.
FPS and Hz describe different parts of the picture
A game’s frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), describes how often it produces a new image. A display’s refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), describes how often it can refresh that image. A 60 Hz screen refreshes up to 60 times per second; a 120 Hz screen can refresh up to 120 times per second, subject to its supported input mode.

The two rates work together, but they are not interchangeable. A 120 Hz TV does not make a game render at 120 FPS. And if a game renders above 60 FPS, a 60 Hz display cannot show the full higher refresh rate. Xbox’s Series X|S hardware fact sheet specifies that 120 FPS requires supported content and a supported display (Xbox Series X|S Fact Sheet).
What Xbox FPS Boost does—and what it does not
FPS Boost is an Xbox backward-compatibility enhancement for selected games on Xbox Series X|S. Xbox describes it as a way to raise frame rates in supported titles; availability and results vary by game. It is not a system-wide setting that adds higher frame rates to every Xbox game. Xbox’s current backward-compatible games listing identifies FPS Boost support and notes that features vary by game.

FPS Boost is also distinct from other visual enhancements. Auto HDR changes color and brightness presentation in some older games; it does not raise frame rate. Resolution describes image detail or pixel dimensions, not how many frames the game renders. A game can therefore have one enhancement without having the others.
FPS Boost does not guarantee 120 FPS
The result depends on the specific title. In its February 2021 launch announcement, Xbox gave New Super Lucky’s Tale as an example that could run at “up to 120 frames per second (fps)” with FPS Boost, while UFC 4 reached 60 FPS on Xbox Series S. Xbox also said the feature could nearly double—and in a few cases quadruple—the original frame rate for selected games. Those were Xbox’s descriptions of supported examples, not a promise for every game (Xbox Wire, February 17, 2021).

Before expecting a particular result, check the current compatibility listing for the game and your console. The Xbox page is dynamic, and its filters let you look for FPS Boost on Series X or Series S. The page also notes that downloads may be required.

No. A 120 Hz display is not required to use FPS Boost: supported games can still benefit from higher frame rates at rates a 60 Hz display can show. A 120 Hz display matters if you want to view supported content at up to 120 FPS.

For a 120 FPS setup, check the whole path rather than just the display’s headline specification:
- The game must support the target frame rate, whether through FPS Boost or another supported mode.
- The console must support the intended output mode.
- The display and the input you use must support that mode.
- Consider resolution trade-offs and whether the games you play actually support the higher rate.
The cited Xbox materials establish the need for supported content and a supported display, but do not specify one universal cable requirement or recommend a particular screen. A 120 Hz monitor or TV cannot add FPS Boost support to a game that lacks it.

How to check a game and its FPS Boost setting
- Open Xbox’s backward-compatible games page and filter for FPS Boost and the console you use.
- Check the game’s current listing before assuming FPS Boost is available or that it reaches 120 FPS; support and performance are title-specific.
- If the game is installed, look in the console’s current game-management or compatibility options for an FPS Boost control. Xbox’s February 2021 announcement described a Compatibility Options button under Manage Game, with an indicator accessible via the Xbox button. That is historical menu guidance; labels and availability may differ in current console software.
FPS Boost support is not the same as a developer-created performance mode or update. When comparing two games, verify each game’s listing and any current in-game options separately.
