Xbox FPS Boost is a platform-level feature for selected backward-compatible games; a native high-frame-rate mode is built into a particular game by its developer. Both can make motion look smoother, but they are enabled differently, support different titles, and may involve different visual tradeoffs.
How FPS Boost differs from a native performance mode

What FPS Boost can—and cannot—promise
FPS Boost is not a universal switch for every Xbox game, nor a guarantee that a supported game will reach a particular frame rate. Xbox said the feature could improve selected backward-compatible games without a game update, but suitability varies by title. Original physics or animation behavior can make increasing a game’s frame rate inappropriate.

Xbox’s February 17, 2021 announcement gave two examples: New Super Lucky’s Tale could run at up to 120 fps, while UFC 4 could run at 60 fps on Xbox Series S. Those are title-specific examples from the announcement, not a promise about other games or every current software version.

It also said FPS Boost was not automatically enabled for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 on Series X at that time because of resolution requirements. That announcement is historical; check the current Compatibility Options for a particular game rather than assuming its setting or behavior is unchanged.

How native high-frame-rate modes work
A native mode is a game-specific option, not FPS Boost under another name. The developer decides which modes the game offers for each console, and the game’s menu may let you choose between frame rate and visual features. A Performance mode may prioritize a higher frame rate; another mode may favor resolution or ray tracing. The names and tradeoffs are specific to the game.
Doom Eternal Update 6: one game, several modes
Xbox’s June 29, 2021 article about Doom Eternal Update 6 lists distinct modes for Series X and Series S. Xbox says the listed modes use dynamic resolution scaling, so the figures below describe the modes in that update, not fixed resolutions guaranteed in every scene or universal Xbox settings.

For these Doom Eternal Update 6 modes, Xbox specifies a compatible 120 Hz display for Performance Mode and a compatible display for the listed resolutions. The requirements belong to that game and update; check the current game-specific guidance for other titles.

How to check or enable the option you want
- For FPS Boost: Open the game’s management options on Xbox and look for Compatibility Options. If FPS Boost is offered, use its toggle to turn it on or off.
- For a native mode: Open the game and check its graphics, video, or performance settings for options such as Performance, Balanced, or Ray Tracing. Consult the game’s official requirements if the menu describes a display or console requirement.
- For 120 fps: Confirm that the specific game mode supports 120 fps on your console and that your display is compatible with 120 Hz. Xbox’s general guidance is that 120 fps requires supported content and a compatible display.
- Before choosing: Compare the mode’s frame rate with its resolution, ray-tracing or other visual features, and display requirements. Do not infer that every FPS Boost title targets 120 fps or that every game’s mode uses a fixed resolution.
