The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is worth the higher price if you will use its rear paddles, adjustable sticks, trigger locks, profiles, or interchangeable parts. If you mainly want a dependable controller for everyday play, the standard Xbox Wireless Controller offers the core experience for less. The choice is about control options—not a guarantee that the Elite will make you play better.
What do you get for the extra cost?
Microsoft’s current US Xbox Design Lab pages show starting estimated retail prices (ERPs) of $169.99 for the Elite Series 2 and $79.99 for the standard Xbox Wireless Controller. That is a $90 difference between the displayed starting prices. ERPs are not guaranteed retailer prices, and the Elite’s price can vary with configuration; check the current listing and package contents before buying. Which controller makes more sense for your play?
Choose the Elite if you have a use for its custom controls
- You want paddles without moving your thumbs from the sticks. The four rear paddles can be assigned to actions. They are useful only if you prefer those inputs and will configure them for the games you play.
- You want different trigger travel or stick feel. Shorter trigger locks, adjustable thumbstick tension, and sensitivity curves let you tailor the controls.
- You will change components or profiles. Swappable sticks and a D-pad, along with profile features, make the Elite more adaptable than the standard model.
Those are feature advantages, not evidence of a measured competitive edge. Microsoft’s description of “over 30 new ways to play like a pro” is promotional language, not a tested outcome.
#1 Best Overall
- PLAY LIKE A PRO — The XBOX Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Core delivers pro-level precision, durability, and control with adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter hair trigger locks, and a wrap-around rubberized grip.
- DESIGNED WITH XBOX DESIGN LAB — This XBOX Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Core in Soft Melon was designed with XBOX Design Lab, the only official platform for custom XBOX controllers. Featuring a distinctive color combination across the top case, bumpers, triggers, and ABXY buttons.
- ADJUSTABLE-TENSION THUMBSTICKS — Fine-tune your aim with thumbsticks that let you adjust resistance for improved accuracy, consistency, and control in every match.
- SHORTER HAIR TRIGGER LOCKS — Fire faster and react quicker with three-step hair trigger locks that reduce pull distance for rapid input in competitive gameplay.
- CORE ESSENTIALS — Includes just the components you need to unleash your best game. Add even more customization with the Complete Component Pack, sold separately, for extra paddles, thumbsticks, a D-pad, carrying case, and charging dock.
Choose the standard controller if the core layout is enough
- You do not need rear paddles or adjustable controls. The standard model already supports button mapping and provides the usual Xbox buttons, sticks, bumpers, and triggers.
- You want to spend less upfront. Microsoft’s current US page displays a lower starting ERP for the standard controller; actual transaction prices can vary.
- You prefer replaceable AA batteries. The standard controller uses AAs rather than an internal rechargeable battery.
Check which Elite package you are buying
“Elite Series 2” does not always mean the same box of accessories. Microsoft’s September 7, 2022 Xbox Wire announcement set launch US MSRPs at $129.99 for the Elite Series 2 Core and $179.99 for the full Elite Series 2. The announcement described the full version as including interchangeable components and carrying/charging accessories; those are historical launch prices, not current price guidance. Xbox Wire’s September 7, 2022 announcement.
Microsoft currently lists an Elite Series 2 Everything Pack for a $69.99 ERP. Its listed contents are a carrying case, charging dock, classic, tall, and dome thumbsticks, a standard or faceted D-pad, four paddles, and a USB-C cable. Microsoft says the pack is compatible with Elite Series 2 controllers. It may suit a Core owner who wants those components; confirm the current price and exactly what is included before purchase. Will either controller work with your devices?
Both are designed for Xbox and have ways to connect to other devices, but compatibility depends on the device, operating system, connection method, and supported features. Microsoft lists the standard controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS, with some device/version limits and unsupported functionality. The Elite page specifies Xbox systems and Windows PCs, with Bluetooth or USB-C for supported PCs and mobile devices. Check Microsoft’s current compatibility details for your exact device before buying: Elite Series 2 and standard controller.
The Xbox Accessories app supports button mapping and profile features on specified Xbox and Windows platforms. Do not assume every Elite feature works on every connected device; verify app and platform support for the setup you plan to use.

What the specifications cannot tell you
The product pages establish the feature differences and Microsoft’s battery claims. They do not establish that the Elite lasts longer, has fewer defects or stick-drift problems, or improves player performance. There is no controlled comparison here of long-term reliability, repair rates, or competitive results, so those should not be treated as settled advantages of either model.
