There is no single wattage that applies to every Xbox model or game. Xbox says its active-hours feature can shut a console down to 0.5 watts outside those hours, compared with 10–15 watts while active; that example is not a universal gameplay measurement. To compare the two off-state modes on your console, open Settings > General > Power options.
How much electricity does an Xbox use?
It depends on the console, activity and power setting. Xbox has not published a complete current table of gameplay wattage for every model, game and workload, so a single number should not be treated as the typical draw for all Xbox use.

One useful official reference is Xbox’s April 2023 description of active hours: after configured active hours, the console fully shuts down and draws 0.5 watts, compared with 10–15 watts while active. Those figures describe that feature’s example, not a measured draw for every game or console. Xbox’s active-hours announcement explains the behavior.
For an estimate specific to your console, compare Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving) in Settings > General > Power options. Xbox says that screen shows the power-use comparison for your console. The November 2022 Xbox update introduced that comparison.

Which Xbox power mode uses less electricity?
Shutdown (energy saving) is the lower-power choice while the console is off. Xbox says it can use up to 20 times less power than Sleep while off. “Up to” describes a maximum relative reduction, not a guaranteed result or exact wattage for every console and setup. Xbox’s January 2023 sustainability announcement gives the comparison.

Xbox’s current names are Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving). Older articles may use the names Standby and Energy Saver. The settings are available through the guide at Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options.

Which mode should you choose?
Choose Shutdown (energy saving) to reduce off-state use
Use Shutdown if minimizing electricity while the console is off matters more than remote wake. Xbox says overnight updates can still take place in this mode, so choosing it does not necessarily mean missing system, game or app updates.

Choose Sleep for fast startup and remote wake
Sleep is the more convenient option if you want faster startup or remote wake during active hours. Active hours let the console remain ready at times you are likely to use it and shut down outside those hours. You can set or adjust the mode and active-hours behavior in Power options.

Will leaving an Xbox on increase your electric bill?
Keeping a console active uses electricity, and an off-state mode also has a power draw. The amount added to a household bill depends on how long you use the console, its actual power use in that activity and your electricity rate. Xbox does not provide one monthly or annual bill figure that applies to every household; use your own console’s displayed comparison and actual usage to estimate your cost.
Xbox also offers carbon-aware update scheduling under specific conditions: the console must be plugged in and connected to the internet, and regional carbon-intensity data must be available. The feature can schedule updates for times when a higher proportion of electricity is coming from lower-carbon sources; it is not a promise of a particular bill reduction. Xbox’s February 2023 update describes those conditions and notes that actual savings vary.

Why might my Xbox’s settings be different?
In a June 10, 2026 announcement, Xbox said it had begun rolling out a change for Insiders with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles set to Sleep, switching them to Shutdown (energy saving). Xbox also said users could change their settings at any time. This was an Insider rollout, not confirmation that every console or user has received the change. Check Power options on your own console to see and change its current setting. Xbox’s Insider update announcement describes the rollout.
