Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature lets you claim a digital entitlement for some Xbox One and Xbox Series X games by inserting the game disc into a disc-reading console and launching the game. It does not turn the disc into a permanent digital copy: Microsoft says the disc still works, while reported Xbox Support wording says digital access may be limited or revoked if you lose or transfer the qualifying disc.
How does Xbox disc-to-digital work?
For a supported title, insert its disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical drive, then launch the game to claim the digital entitlement. That is the claim method described by Xbox VP Jason Ronald in the August 26, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement. Microsoft says the physical disc continues to work as before after the entitlement is claimed.

The entitlement provides digital access associated with that qualifying disc; it is not a conversion that detaches the game from the disc. Digital Citizen reported on October 2, 2026, that Xbox Support describes the offer as “One revokable digital license per game disc.” The warning about revocation is reported support wording, not a directly readable passage from the support page.

Can I sell my disc after claiming the digital license?
Do not assume you can sell or give away the disc and keep the digital access. Digital Citizen’s report of Xbox Support guidance says associated access may be limited or revoked if the qualifying disc is lost or transferred. That wording makes continued possession the practical condition to plan around.

The available reporting does not establish how Xbox detects a transfer, how often the disc is checked, or exactly when “may be limited” becomes revocation. Treat the entitlement as revocable rather than as a substitute for owning a separately purchased digital copy.
Which Xbox discs and consoles are eligible?
Supported game discs
Microsoft’s launch announcement says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, not all of them. The reported support guidance excludes Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs and says eligibility can vary. Xbox described the launch scope as “thousands of titles,” with more to be added; it did not give an exact count or publish a complete eligible-game list in the sources available by October 2, 2026.

The initial claim requires a console that can read the qualifying disc. A disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X fits the documented flow. An all-digital Xbox Series S cannot read a disc to initiate the claim, according to Digital Citizen’s October 2 report. Owning a drive-equipped console does not make an otherwise unsupported game eligible.

What do you get beyond playing on the console?
Microsoft says the entitlement can provide digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, but only where the individual game supports those features. The announcement does not promise that every claimed game works on every device or through cloud streaming. Check the game’s own feature support before relying on either benefit.
How does this differ from buying a digital copy?
| Question | Disc-to-digital entitlement | Digital store purchase |
|---|---|---|
| What is access tied to? | Continued possession of the qualifying physical disc; reported Support wording says access may be limited or revoked after loss or transfer. | A store purchase. The cited sources do not establish a comprehensive comparison of digital-purchase terms. |
| Does the physical game remain usable? | Yes. Microsoft says the disc continues to work after the entitlement is claimed. | Not applicable to a purchase without a physical disc. |
| Can it include Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming? | Yes, where the title supports the feature, according to Microsoft. | The cited sources do not establish terms for all store purchases. |
This is a practical distinction, not a complete statement of the legal terms for ordinary digital purchases.

Is the feature publicly available, and what remains unclear?
Microsoft’s August 26, 2026 announcement said Insider testing would begin August 31. Digital Citizen reported on October 2 that the feature appeared on a public Xbox Support page without preview wording, indicating it had moved beyond Insider testing by that date. These are different dated signals: the Xbox Wire post announced the feature and its planned test, while the later report describes its public support-page status.
As of Digital Citizen’s October 2 report, no region list or complete eligibility list had been published. The available sources also do not settle title-by-title publisher participation, fee policy in every case, or how transfer enforcement works. For the current claim steps and a particular game, use the Xbox Support page titled “Disc to digital licensing on Xbox”; the detailed operational wording cited here was reported secondhand by Digital Citizen.
