Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest
The Quest runs the Xbox Cloud Gaming app, while the game runs on Xbox cloud servers and is streamed to the headset. Xbox’s December 2023 launch announcement describes playing games on a large virtual 2D display; it does not describe native, immersive Quest VR gameplay. The setup requires current access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, a supported controller and a high-speed internet connection. Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop shows your computer’s desktop in the headset and can stream PC VR games. In this setup, the game runs on your own computer rather than in Xbox’s cloud. The standalone Quest app is one part of the setup; the computer and network must also be capable of streaming the content you want to use.

What you need for each setup
Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Access to Xbox Cloud Gaming under the service’s current terms.
- A supported controller.
- A high-speed internet connection.
- A compatible Quest headset. Xbox’s December 19, 2025 getting-started guide lists Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
Xbox’s December 13, 2023 setup instructions say to download the Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) app from the Meta Quest Store and follow its tutorial to pair a supported controller. Because the app and service details may change, check the current Meta Quest Store listing and Xbox guidance before following older instructions.

Virtual Desktop
- The Virtual Desktop app for Quest and the computer you want to access.
- For desktop use, Virtual Desktop lists Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, or macOS Catalina or later, as computer requirements.
- For PC VR game streaming, a VR-ready Windows PC is required. Virtual Desktop gives a GTX 970 as a baseline example; that vendor-published example is not a guarantee of good performance in every current game.
- For its network guidance, Virtual Desktop recommends connecting the computer by Ethernet to a 5 GHz 802.11ac or 802.11ax router.
Virtual Desktop’s product page lists Quest 1, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro. Xbox’s device list and Virtual Desktop’s list come from sources published at different times, so verify current compatibility in each product listing before buying or setting up either option.
Which should you choose?
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming if…
- You want to play supported Xbox games on a large virtual screen.
- You do not want to run the games on your own gaming PC.
- You have the required Xbox service access, a supported controller and a reliable high-speed internet connection.
Choose Virtual Desktop if…
- You already own a capable computer and want to view its desktop in the headset.
- You want to stream PC VR games and have a VR-ready Windows PC and suitable local network.
The official materials cited here do not establish an officially supported way to run Xbox Cloud Gaming through Virtual Desktop. Treat them as separate options, not interchangeable apps or a combined setup.

Performance and compatibility caveats
Xbox Cloud Gaming depends on the internet connection between the Quest and the cloud service. Virtual Desktop depends on the computer’s capability and the local network; its vendor specifically advises wiring the computer to the router. The official materials cited here do not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison of latency, image quality or reliability, so they do not establish that either option is always faster, sharper or more responsive.
