Battle.net remains Blizzard’s documented app for installing its games and troubleshooting their downloads and updates. Xbox can show installed Battle.net games, but that does not mean it replaces Battle.net’s installation or patching workflows.
What each app is for
The apps overlap as places to find or launch games, but they serve different purposes. Xbox combines game discovery, Xbox and Game Pass access, social and cross-device features, and an aggregated library. Battle.net is Blizzard’s desktop app for its games, with Blizzard support directing players to it for installation and download or update troubleshooting.

Xbox lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher as its app requirement. Its stated requirements also include 150 MB of storage and a 720p display; individual games may have different requirements. See the Xbox app for PC requirements and features.

How Xbox’s aggregated library works
In an announcement dated September 15, 2025, Xbox said its PC app’s My Library and Most Recent sections can include installed games from Battle.net and other supported PC storefronts. You can control which supported storefronts appear under Settings > Library & Extensions. The feature is useful for finding and launching installed games from one place; the announcement does not say that the Xbox app takes over the other storefronts’ installation or update controls. Read Xbox’s announcement of the aggregated gaming library for its stated scope.

Where to install and update Blizzard games
For Blizzard games, use Battle.net when you need to install a game or resolve an installation, download, or update problem. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft installation instructions describe selecting the game and game version in Battle.net before installing. If Battle.net shows Install for a game that is already on your PC, Blizzard’s guidance is to locate the existing game folder. Its support material also directs players with download or update trouble to technical troubleshooting.
That guidance establishes Battle.net’s role for the documented Blizzard workflows; it does not establish that every Battle.net game has identical update settings. The available documentation also does not establish that either launcher downloads or updates games faster. Choose based on the task: Xbox for discovery and a broader library view, Battle.net for Blizzard installation and support workflows.

What Game Pass access means
The Xbox app can provide access to PC Game Pass, but the subscription catalog changes. Access to a game ends if the subscription expires or the title leaves the catalog, and catalog availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform. Check the current PC Game Pass catalog and terms for availability where you play.

Which app should you use?
- Use Xbox to browse Xbox and Game Pass games, use its listed social or cross-device features, or view supported installed games from multiple storefronts together.
- Use Battle.net to install Blizzard games and follow Blizzard’s instructions for locating an existing installation or troubleshooting downloads and updates.
- Use both if you want Xbox as a discovery or library view while relying on Battle.net for Blizzard’s documented installation and support tasks.
