An Xbox achievement is an individual milestone you unlock in a game; Gamerscore is the cumulative point total on your Xbox profile from Gamerscore-bearing achievements. The achievement records what you did, while Gamerscore adds up the configured points attached to those unlocks.
What is the difference between Xbox achievements and Gamerscore?

Microsoft describes Gamerscore as “a single, common gaming score for the player across the Xbox ecosystem.” Its developer documentation says Xbox services automatically adds an achievement’s configured amount when a Gamerscore achievement unlocks. Because Gamerscore is a sum, it does not tell you which particular goals you completed. Your achievement history provides that detail; two players with the same score can have unlocked different achievements.

Gamerscore-bearing achievements do. You earn points one unlock at a time; you do not have to finish a game to build a score. But an achievement is not necessarily a point award: Microsoft’s achievement system can also grant rewards such as art or in-app items. Those rewards do not automatically become Gamerscore. Xbox’s 2013 explanation of the Xbox One transition described achievements as goals or activities and noted that they could deliver digital artwork, maps, characters, or temporary stat boosts as well as Gamerscore. Is Gamerscore per game or across your Xbox account?
Gamerscore is one running total for the player across the Xbox ecosystem, not a separate score that resets for each game. Each game contributes through its Gamerscore achievements, while the achievement list retains the game-specific record of what was unlocked. The total is a score, not a count of achievements and not, on the evidence cited here, a spendable currency.

How many achievements or points can a game have?
Microsoft’s current Xbox console requirements set limits for developers. They are policy ceilings and launch requirements, not a promise that every game uses the same achievement count or awards the maximum.

What does Mythic Achievements mean?
On September 29, 2026, Xbox announced Mythic Achievements for Xbox Insiders: a marker for completing all of a game’s original achievements. Achievements added later through DLC or updates do not count toward that marker, and Xbox says Mythic status is retained. The announcement also said eligible earlier completions, including Xbox 360 titles, had been recognized. In a separate April 8, 2026 announcement, Xbox said select Insiders could test refreshed achievement notifications, the ability to hide games from profile history, and highlights for games where all available Gamerscore had been earned. Hidden games still counted toward total Gamerscore and activity reporting. Xbox described this as Insider testing, with broader availability to come later at that time.
