x86 vs. x64: What the Processor Terms Mean for Your PC

x86 commonly refers to the 32-bit IA-32 lineage; x64 extends it with a 64-bit mode while retaining legacy 32-bit support. Hardware, operating-system and application compatibility are separate questions.

x86 usually refers to the 32-bit IA-32 architecture lineage; x64 is its backward-compatible 64-bit extension. The difference affects registers, addressing, execution modes and software conventions—not a processor’s speed by itself. A processor’s ability to run a mode also does not guarantee that its operating system or every application supports it.

What do x86 and x64 mean?

In everyday computing, “x86” commonly means the 32-bit IA-32 architecture and execution environment. The name comes from earlier Intel processor families, but it should not be read as a precise description of every capability in a modern x86-family CPU.

“x64” is Microsoft’s umbrella term for the backward-compatible 64-bit extension of x86. Microsoft describes it as adding a 64-bit mode while retaining a legacy 32-bit mode compatible with x86. In Microsoft’s terminology, x64 includes both AMD64 and Intel 64 (Microsoft’s x64 Architecture Overview and Registers documentation).

How AMD64 and Intel 64 fit in

AMD64 is AMD’s name for its x86-64 architecture; Intel 64 is Intel’s name for its 64-bit extension of IA-32. They are vendor terms within the broader x64 category used by Microsoft, rather than names for two unrelated processor families. For implementation-level details, consult the relevant vendor’s manuals: AMD’s AMD64 Architecture Programmer’s Manual listing and Intel’s manuals for Intel 64 and IA-32 architectures.

What changes when software runs in x64 mode?

x64 is more than simply doubling a number of bits. It changes the processor environment available to software, including register width and count, addressing, and calling conventions—the rules software uses to pass information to functions.

  • Wider general-purpose registers: The original eight general-purpose registers are widened from 32 to 64 bits.
  • Additional registers: x64 makes eight more general-purpose registers available.
  • Expanded instruction pointer and addressing: The instruction pointer and addressing model expand in 64-bit mode, supporting a larger potential address space.
  • Different software conventions: Calling conventions and other aspects of the software interface, or ABI, differ from 32-bit environments. Software must be built for and follow the conventions of its target environment.

Microsoft’s x64 architecture documentation summarizes the design as a backward-compatible x86 extension with a new 64-bit mode and a legacy 32-bit mode. Intel’s architecture manuals cover the programming environment, instruction set and system programming in greater detail.

How do x86 and x64 compare?

Aspect x86 / IA-32 x64
Meaning Commonly used for the 32-bit IA-32 lineage and execution environment Microsoft’s term for the backward-compatible 64-bit extension; includes AMD64 and Intel 64
General-purpose registers Eight original registers, 32 bits wide Those eight registers widened to 64 bits, plus eight additional general-purpose registers
Execution modes 32-bit execution environment 64-bit mode and a legacy 32-bit mode; exact available modes depend on processor and system configuration
Addressing Smaller addressing model than x64; exact limits depend on implementation and configuration Expanded addressing model; usable limits depend on processor, operating system, firmware and application
Software interface Uses 32-bit conventions and ABI Uses x64 conventions and ABI, which software must support
Compatibility Runs in an appropriate 32-bit environment Hardware may support 32-bit execution, but installed operating system and software determine practical compatibility

Can a 64-bit processor run 32-bit programs?

Often, but not automatically in every setup. A processor’s supported execution modes are a hardware capability; whether a 32-bit program can be installed and run also depends on the operating system and the software stack.

Intel’s architecture documentation describes an Intel 64 processor as supporting the IA-32 basic execution environment. In IA-32e mode, it can execute 64-bit programs in 64-bit sub-mode and 32-bit programs in compatibility sub-mode (Intel architecture manuals). This explains how processor support can work; it is not a promise that every operating-system edition or application supports every 32-bit program.

For example, Intel’s support article says 10th-generation Intel Core processors use a 64-bit instruction set and should be compatible with 32-bit programs (Intel’s 32-bit software support guidance). That statement concerns the processor example in the article, not every processor, operating system or application.

Does x64 mean more RAM?

x64 provides a larger potential address space, but “64-bit” alone does not tell you how much memory a particular computer can use. Address-space and physical-memory limits depend on processor capabilities, operating-system edition, firmware and application design. Installed RAM and usable RAM are also not interchangeable: the system must be able to address and support the installed memory.

Intel’s IA-32 documentation gives a specific example, not a universal x86 limit: up to 4 GiB of linear address space and up to 64 GiB of physical address space when extended physical addressing is used (Intel architecture manuals). Those figures apply to the described IA-32 capabilities and should not be transferred to every x86 implementation. To determine a computer’s actual limit, check the processor specification and the operating system’s documented limits for that device.

Is x64 faster than x86?

Bitness by itself does not establish a speed ranking. Performance depends on the processor’s implementation, the workload and how the software is built and behaves. x64’s additional registers and expanded addressing can matter to software, but they do not make every x64 program faster than its 32-bit counterpart.

How to check which environment your computer uses

Distinguish three questions: whether the processor supports x64, whether the installed operating system is 64-bit, and whether a particular application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 64-bit-capable processor does not prove that a 64-bit operating system is installed, and the operating system’s bitness does not identify every application’s bitness. Check the processor and operating-system specifications for the device, then consult the application’s own documentation or system details for its build.

Where to find architecture details

For everyday decisions, the processor and operating-system documentation are the most relevant sources for supported modes and memory limits. For instruction-level or system-programming questions, vendor manuals are the detailed references. Intel’s manuals catalog describes coverage of the architecture and programming environment, instruction reference, system programming and model-specific registers; it was updated September 21, 2026 (Intel manuals catalog). AMD’s listing identifies revision 4.09 of its AMD64 Architecture Programmer’s Manual, released March 9, 2026 (AMD documentation listing). Intel says electronic editions are available and hard-copy manuals can be obtained through print-on-demand from a third-party vendor (Intel manuals catalog; Intel print-on-demand information).
