If X (formerly Twitter) will not load or a feature is failing in Chrome, work through a few checks: confirm your connection, try an Incognito window, update Chrome, and test extensions one at a time. The right fix depends on whether the problem is loading, a browser conflict, or signing in.
How to fix X when it will not load in Chrome
- Check your connection. Confirm that other websites load. If you use a VPN, temporarily turn it off and try x.com again. If access returns only when the VPN is off, X advises contacting your VPN provider. This test can help narrow down the problem; it does not establish that every loading issue is caused by a VPN. X’s browser troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection.
- Try an Incognito window. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window, then visit x.com. X recommends private browsing as a diagnostic. If the site works there, compare what differs in your regular window, especially extensions and saved site data; Incognito does not by itself identify the cause. X’s guidance includes this check.
- Update Chrome and your operating system. X says it officially supports Chrome versions released within the past year and recommends using an up-to-date browser and operating system. Older browsers, and extensions that modify the browser’s user agent, may prevent access. See X’s supported-browser information.
- Test extensions and blocking software individually. Temporarily disable an extension, reload x.com, and see whether the problem changes; then restore it before testing another. X notes that “Some browser extensions can interfere with actions performed on x.com.” Ad blockers and other additional software are also worth checking one at a time. You do not need to delete an extension to test it. If turning one off restores access, review its settings or contact its provider.
- Clear X’s browser data if the earlier checks do not help. Clearing cache and cookies may resolve browser problems, but removing cookies can sign you out. Cookies also support X features and some login flows require them to be accepted. In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies to review cookie settings; Chrome’s wording can vary by version. X recommends clearing cache and cookies as a troubleshooting step. Read its browser guidance.
What to try when X works in Incognito but not in a regular window
Use the difference as a clue, not a diagnosis. Incognito changes the browser context, so success there does not prove which setting is responsible. In the regular window, temporarily turn off extensions one at a time and retest. If none changes the result, clearing cached data and cookies is another option; be prepared to sign in again.

What to do when you cannot log in
- Make sure Chrome accepts cookies, since X says some login flows require them.
- Try signing in from another browser or computer to help determine whether the problem is specific to Chrome.
- Clear Chrome’s cache if the login problem continues, keeping in mind that clearing cookies may also sign you out of sites.
X’s login help says a “Locked out!” message should clear on its own after about an hour. While waiting, do not request additional password resets. If the listed steps do not resolve the login issue, contact X Support. See X’s login troubleshooting guidance.

If browser checks do not explain an account-specific problem, review your connected apps in X’s Apps settings and revoke access for connections you no longer need. X says connected apps can sometimes create account problems, but removing an app is a possible troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed fix. X includes connected-app review in its troubleshooting advice.

If none of these steps works
Note whether the problem affects only x.com or other sites too, whether Incognito changes the result, and which individual extension or VPN tests made a difference. Those observations can help distinguish a Chrome-specific issue from a connection or account problem when you seek support. These checks do not establish whether X is experiencing an outage; avoid assuming one without a current status check.
