Yes. You can use a Wyze camera without paying for a camera plan: Wyze lists live streaming, motion and sound alerts, alarm sound detections, timelapse, and image-only cloud storage among its free features. A compatible camera with a microSD slot can also record locally without a subscription. The main trade-off is that free Events-tab entries are thumbnails, not cloud video clips.
What still works for free?
Wyze’s Cam Plus overview, dated January 30, 2026, lists these features for users without a paid camera plan:

- Live streaming in the Wyze app

Free access does not mean every camera feature is included. In particular, an alert or an Events-tab thumbnail is not a saved cloud video.
Events are visible, but free entries are thumbnails
You can open the Events tab without a subscription. Wyze says nonsubscribers see thumbnails rather than event videos there. Those thumbnails may help identify an event, but they do not provide a cloud-saved clip to play back. See Wyze’s Events-tab explanation.

Monitoring tab and camera modes
Wyze says the Monitoring tab is available to app users without a subscription and includes multi-camera viewing. Disarmed, Home, and Away modes are visible, but arming and disarming them requires Cam Unlimited. This is separate from viewing a camera’s live stream in the app. Details are in Wyze’s Monitoring-tab article.
Web View has a separate monthly limit
Computer-based Wyze Web View is not the same as live viewing in the app. According to Wyze’s page, updated September 30, 2026, a nonsubscriber can select one camera tile to stream during the current month, then select a camera again when the next month begins. Check Wyze Web View’s current limits before relying on browser access.

How to record locally without a plan
If your camera supports a microSD card, Wyze says it can record continuously or record events only without a subscription. The company describes the feature this way: “A feature on every Wyze Cam with a microSD slot is 24/7 local recording, which gives you Continuous or Events Only recording with no subscription required.” The camera needs a compatible card, and you must enable local recording in Advanced Settings. Wyze also says local footage can continue recording while the camera is offline. Read its local-recording instructions for setup details.

- Insert a compatible card, then open the camera’s settings in the Wyze app.
- Go to Advanced Settings and enable local recording. Choose continuous recording or Events Only if those options are available for your model.
- Review the card’s footage from the camera rather than expecting a cloud event clip in the Events tab.
Local recording changes where footage is stored, not how easy it is to find. To locate a particular moment on the card, you may need to review footage manually; cloud event clips and text search are not part of this free local-storage setup.

Check model compatibility before buying a card
Wyze says Battery Cam Pro, Wyze Video Doorbell, and Wyze Video Doorbell Pro do not support local recording. Its comparison also notes that Wyze Cam Outdoor v1/v2 and Battery Cam Pro do not support 24/7 continuous recording. Support varies by model, so verify the precise camera before purchasing a card or planning continuous recording. Wyze’s microSD comparison covers the distinctions it lists.
Card format and capacity guidance can also be model-specific. A Wyze guide for Cam v1, Cam v2, and Pan recommends Class 10 cards; it lists FAT32 support for 8, 16, and 32 GB and exFAT support for 64, 128, and 256 GB for those covered models. Wyze says it tested up to 256 GB on those cameras and estimates roughly two to three weeks of playback on a 256 GB card, with the oldest footage overwritten when the card fills. Do not apply those legacy format and capacity details to other Wyze models without checking their guidance.

Local card storage versus a camera plan
The choice is mainly between storing footage on a card and using cloud event clips. Wyze’s comparison gives the following examples; they are not universal retention guarantees.

What a subscription adds
Wyze’s Cam Plus overview lists smart AI detections for people, pets, vehicles, packages, and sounds; AI event recordings that capture motion and sound events; 14 days of rollover video cloud storage; and Web View access. Those capabilities address different needs from local recording: a card keeps footage on the device, while cloud event clips and AI detections can make specific events easier to review.
A model-specific note for Wyze Cam v3
Wyze says free users need an installed microSD card for uninterrupted continuous recording on Cam v3. Its support guidance also describes a five-minute cooldown between similar event videos under a service-plan configuration unless settings are changed; Cam Plus and higher plans remove that cooldown and allow longer recording while motion continues. This guidance is specific to Cam v3 and should not be assumed to describe every Wyze camera. See Wyze Cam v3’s event-recording guidance.
