Adding up Linux processes’ resident set size (RSS) does not tell you how much memory the WSL2 virtual machine is using. RSS is a per-process measure; the Linux guest also uses file cache and kernel memory, and WSL2 distributions share a managed VM. That is why Windows can show a larger WSL-related memory figure than a sum of process RSS values.
Why process RSS and WSL2 memory do not match
RSS estimates the resident physical pages attributed to a process. It is useful when asking how much resident memory a particular process uses, but it is not a complete accounting of the Linux guest or its VM. Summing process RSS can also be misleading where pages are shared: process-level attribution is not the same as counting each physical page once across the system.

Linux memory use includes more than process-resident pages. File cache and kernel allocations can contribute to the guest’s footprint without appearing as ordinary process RSS. The VM’s memory is another scope again: Windows reports memory associated with the VM, not a simple sum of the RSS values you see inside Linux.

Which memory number answers your question?
| Measure | Scope | What it helps explain |
|---|---|---|
| Process RSS | One Linux process | Resident pages attributed to that process; useful for process-level investigation, not a whole-guest total. |
| Cgroup memory | A Linux control group | Memory categories charged to a group, including categories such as anonymous memory, file cache, kernel memory, page tables, and socket buffers under cgroup v2. |
| WSL2 VM memory | The shared virtual machine | Memory assigned to and used by the VM across its running Linux distributions. |
| Windows host view | The Windows host’s view of the VM | Host-side memory associated with the virtualized Linux environment; the displayed process label can vary by WSL and runtime version. |
Microsoft describes WSL2 as running a Linux kernel inside a lightweight utility VM. It also says that Linux distributions running under WSL2 share CPU, kernel, memory, and swap, even though they have separate process namespaces. A per-process or per-distribution total therefore does not represent the shared VM’s complete memory picture. Microsoft’s WSL architecture overview explains this boundary.

How to inspect Linux memory beyond RSS
Check cgroup v2 statistics
If your Linux environment uses cgroup v2, inspect the relevant memory.stat file under /sys/fs/cgroup/. Its entries are reported in bytes. Read the names, not fixed line positions: the kernel documentation notes that fields can be added or reordered.
anon: anonymous memory.file: file-backed memory, including cache.kernel: kernel memory.pagetables: memory used for page tables.sock: memory used by network sockets.
The exact cgroup file to inspect depends on the cgroup hierarchy and the group you want to measure. A group-level value answers a different question from total memory across the guest, so identify the scope before comparing it with RSS. See the Linux kernel’s cgroup v2 documentation for the defined statistics.

Account for older cgroup v1 rules
Cgroup v1 accounting has its own rules for resident anonymous pages, page cache, shared pages, and swap. Its documentation explains that mapped anonymous RSS and page cache are accounted, while duplicate accounting for a mapped file-cache page is avoided; shared-page charges also follow controller-specific rules. This is another reason not to treat the sum of process RSS as a direct total of cgroup or VM memory. See the Linux kernel’s memory resource controller documentation.
Check the VM-wide memory and swap settings
WSL’s global configuration file is %UserProfile%.wslconfig. Its memory setting specifies how much memory to assign to the WSL2 VM, and swap configures VM swap. These are VM-level settings, not separate limits for each Linux process or distribution. Microsoft currently documents defaults of 50% of total Windows memory for memory and 25% of memory size, rounded up to the nearest GB, for swap. Treat those as documented defaults, not guarantees for every WSL release or configuration; consult the live WSL configuration reference and note your installed WSL version.

Diagnose a mismatch without mistaking cache for a leak
- Confirm the distribution uses WSL2. In PowerShell, run
wsl --list --verboseand check the VERSION column for the distribution. The managed-VM explanation applies to WSL2. - Review the VM configuration. Check
%UserProfile%.wslconfigformemoryandswap, and remember that the file applies to WSL generally rather than to one process. - Compare like with like. Use RSS for a process question; use cgroup statistics for the relevant group; use Windows’ host-side view when investigating host RAM pressure. Include file and kernel categories when interpreting a guest footprint.
- Consider cache and shared-page accounting. Cached pages and shared mappings can make totals differ without demonstrating a leak. Microsoft’s WSL version comparison notes that cached pages may remain allocated to WSL2 until the WSL instance shuts down. Behavior can depend on WSL version.
- For a clean VM-level comparison, shut WSL down only after saving work. Run
wsl --shutdownin PowerShell, then start the distribution again and remeasure. Shutting down ends running WSL workloads; it is not a substitute for diagnosing the source of memory use.
Why WSL version matters
Memory reclamation behavior has changed across WSL releases. Microsoft’s release notes describe historical changes involving returning unused memory to the Windows host and reporting free-memory pages. Those notes establish that behavior has evolved, not that every current installation handles memory identically. Check the WSL release notes alongside the current configuration reference when a result differs from older guidance.
