WSL sparse VHDs can reduce the physical Windows disk space used by a Linux distribution’s virtual disk, but they do not reduce its logical capacity or guarantee that every deleted file is reclaimed immediately. To understand what changed, distinguish Linux filesystem usage, the VHD’s virtual maximum, and the space Windows has physically allocated.
How do WSL sparse VHDs save disk space?
WSL 2 stores each Linux distribution in an ext4-formatted virtual hard disk (VHDX) on Windows. The disk grows as the distribution needs more storage, so its virtual capacity is not the same as the amount of Windows drive space it currently occupies. Microsoft’s disk-space guidance explains this distinction.

A sparse file can contain unallocated ranges that programs read as zeroes. On NTFS, zeroed ranges in a sparse or compressed file may be deallocated, reducing physical storage allocation without changing the file’s logical size. That is the mechanism behind sparse VHD space savings; it is not a smaller Linux disk capacity. See Microsoft’s Windows documentation on sparse files.
Craig Loewen, Principal Product Manager, described the intended behavior in Microsoft’s September 18, 2023 WSL update: “WSL virtual hard disks (VHDs) grow in size as you use them, and now with this feature enabled they will automatically shrink in size too!” The current configuration reference still categorizes sparseVhd as experimental. Microsoft’s sources do not specify an exact reclamation trigger, schedule, or amount for every deletion pattern or workload.

Does the 1 TB WSL disk size mean it uses 1 TB on my PC?
No. Microsoft lists 1 TB as the current default maximum virtual disk size for a WSL 2 VHD. Its disk-space page notes that older WSL releases used defaults of 512 GB before release 0.58.0 and 256 GB before that. These figures describe virtual capacity, not physical Windows storage already consumed. A VHD can have a large maximum while using less host disk space.
How do I check what is using space?
First identify which measurement you need. Linux filesystem usage tells you how much space files use inside the distribution; the VHD’s logical capacity is its virtual size limit; Windows host allocation is the physical space taken on the Windows drive. Those numbers answer different questions and need not match.

wsl.exe --system -d <distribution-name> df -h /mnt/wslg/distro
This reports Linux-side filesystem information; it is not a direct measurement of Windows host allocation. If the command does not work, Microsoft suggests updating to the Store version with wsl --update or trying wsl df -h /. Instructions and availability can vary with the installed WSL release.

How do I enable sparse VHD in WSL?
There are two documented configuration paths. The setting in the WSL configuration reference applies to newly created VHDs; Microsoft’s management command changes sparse status for an existing distribution. Check the installed WSL release because availability can vary.
For newly created VHDs
In the [experimental] section of the WSL configuration file, set sparseVhd=true. The setting’s documented default is false. It makes newly created VHDs sparse; it is not the documented route for changing an already-created distribution.

For an existing distribution
Microsoft’s September 2023 announcement documents wsl --manage <distro> --set-sparse <true/false>. Substitute the distribution name and choose true or false to enable or disable sparse status. Confirm the command is available in your installed WSL version before relying on it.
Why is my WSL VHDX still large after I deleted files?
Deleting files can increase free space reported inside Linux without producing an immediate or predictable reduction in Windows host allocation. Sparse behavior depends on zeroed ranges being deallocated, and Microsoft does not give a universal timing or reclaim guarantee for every workload. Also check that you are comparing the same kind of measurement: Linux free space, VHD logical capacity, or Windows physical allocation.

Microsoft documents df -h for checking Linux-side space, but the official guidance does not provide a universal troubleshooting recipe for every case in which a VHDX appears not to shrink. Avoid assuming a particular percentage of savings or an instant change.
What should I avoid when maintaining a WSL VHD?
Do not modify, move, or access WSL distribution files in AppData with Windows tools or editors. Microsoft warns that doing so could corrupt a distribution. For VHD maintenance, Microsoft’s disk-space guidance uses wsl.exe --shutdown before VHD operations. The command terminates running distributions and the WSL 2 utility VM, so save work and stop processes first. See the WSL basic commands reference.
Windows DiskPart includes a general compact vdisk command for reducing the physical size of dynamically expanding VHDs. That general command description does not establish a safe, universally compatible compaction procedure for sparse WSL VHDs. Do not treat it as a guaranteed fix for a WSL distribution.
