Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutewpad.lan is usually a local hostname a device tries to resolve while looking for a proxy configuration; it is not a separate proxy protocol. WPAD (Web Proxy Auto-Discovery) discovers the location of a PAC file, and the PAC file—not WPAD—decides whether a particular request uses a proxy or goes directly to its destination. WPAD can use DHCP or DNS, while manual settings, managed policies, an explicitly configured PAC URL, and direct connections are alternatives.
What does wpad.lan mean?
WPAD is short for Web Proxy Auto-Discovery. The name wpad.lan is best understood as a hostname in a local network’s DNS naming context. A client may begin with the short name wpad; its DNS resolver can append configured search suffixes, such as lan, and try the resulting name. The suffix is an environmental detail, not a WPAD mode or a special standard defined by the sources cited here.

The actual DNS zone and the client’s suffix search list determine what that name resolves to. If you encounter wpad.lan, check those settings rather than assuming every network uses a .lan zone or that the hostname itself contains the proxy rules.

- Discover a PAC URL. A client configured to detect proxy settings automatically looks for the URL of a Proxy Auto-Configuration (PAC) file, using DHCP, DNS, or both, depending on the implementation.
- Retrieve the PAC file. The client downloads the script from the discovered URL.
- Choose a route for a request. For HTTP requests, the PAC script evaluates the requested URL and host. In Microsoft’s WinHTTP documentation, this decision is made through
FindProxyForURL(url, host). The script can return one or more proxy choices or a direct route.
This separation matters: WPAD is the discovery mechanism; PAC is the routing logic. A device can use a PAC file without using WPAD if an administrator supplies the PAC URL explicitly.

Microsoft Learn describes WPAD as a mechanism for discovering a PAC URL and notes that the WPAD specification did not progress beyond an Internet-Draft, which expired in May 2001. That describes the specification’s status, not the absence of deployed implementations.
DHCP and DNS discovery are different paths
| Discovery path | How it finds the PAC URL | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DHCP-based WPAD | A client can obtain a PAC URL through DHCP option 252. | Support and behavior depend on the client and network configuration. Chromium’s current rolling documentation says Chrome supports DHCP WPAD on Windows and ChromeOS. |
| DNS-based WPAD | The client probes for the short name wpad; DNS search suffixes can turn that into a fully qualified local name such as wpad.lan. |
Resolution depends on the configured DNS zones and suffix list. Chromium warns that long suffix lists can cause repeated failed lookups and slow resolution. |
For Chrome configured to auto-detect, Chromium documents DHCP-based WPAD before DNS-based WPAD. Its documentation says Chrome on macOS does not itself support DHCP WPAD in auto-detect mode, although macOS may place a PAC URL discovered through DHCP into system proxy settings. These are platform-specific implementation details, not a guarantee that all browsers or applications follow the same order or support the same methods.
Proxy configuration alternatives
| Approach | What is configured | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WPAD through DHCP or DNS | The network supplies a way to discover the PAC URL; the PAC file supplies routing rules. | Convenient for clients on managed networks, but depends on supported clients and trustworthy DHCP, DNS, and search-suffix configuration. |
| Manual proxy settings | A proxy address and, where needed, a bypass list are entered on the client. | Direct and explicit for a small or stable set of clients. Changes must be applied to the affected clients or distributed through policy, and some applications may not inherit system or browser settings. |
| Centrally managed settings | An administrator distributes proxy configuration through a management mechanism such as Group Policy or platform policy. | Useful for managed fleets and consistent changes. Confirm which operating systems and applications actually receive and honor the policy. |
| Explicit PAC URL | The client is given the PAC file’s URL instead of discovering it through WPAD. | Retains PAC-based routing while removing the WPAD name-discovery step. NIST NCCoE describes explicit PAC configuration through browser policy as an example mitigation in its enterprise deployment guide. |
| Direct connection | No proxy is configured for the traffic. | Appropriate only when network policy permits direct access; traffic does not receive the proxy’s routing or controls. |
Microsoft Learn notes that applications that do not obtain settings from Internet Explorer may need application-specific configuration. Google’s ChromeOS documentation also distinguishes manual proxy settings, PAC scripts, auto-detect/WPAD, and direct mode, and describes organization-wide and per-network policy options. A setting that works in one browser therefore does not establish that every application or operating-system service uses the same proxy.

Control the DNS search boundary
A DNS-based probe can be expanded using each configured search suffix. Chromium warns that a long suffix list can trigger repeated NXDOMAIN lookups, delaying resolution. More importantly, if a suffix points outside the organization’s administrative control, a client could resolve a WPAD name to an attacker-controlled PAC host and receive proxy instructions chosen by that attacker. Administrators should review the actual suffix list and ensure every namespace used for discovery is under trusted control.
Scope DHCP and protect PAC delivery
DHCP option 252 should be provided only on networks where WPAD is intended and the DHCP infrastructure is trusted. PAC hosting and delivery should also be protected so clients retrieve the intended script. The relevant safeguards depend on the organization’s environment; these checks are practical guidance, not a complete hardening standard.
Do not assume discovery failure is harmless
NIST NCCoE’s SP 1800-25 Volume C presents an example enterprise proxy deployment and warns that if a WPAD host is unavailable, a browser may try another WPAD result that an attacker controls. Its guide recommends explicitly configuring the PAC URL through browser policy as an example mitigation. The guide also cautions that its quick setup is not sufficient for a secure configuration, so treat its deployment as design context rather than universal current vendor instructions.
How to choose and validate an approach
Compare the options against the way your network and endpoints are managed, rather than treating WPAD as a universal default. In particular, establish:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Administrator control: Can you centrally maintain proxy addresses, PAC content, and the DNS or DHCP configuration that clients trust?
- Client coverage: Which browser, operating system, application, or service needs the setting, and does it honor system settings, browser settings, or policy?
- Network changes: Do clients move between networks with different proxy requirements, making automatic or per-network configuration useful?
- Traffic intent: Must requests pass through a proxy, should only selected destinations use one, or is direct access allowed?
- Failure behavior: What happens when DHCP, DNS, the PAC host, or the proxy is unavailable, and could a fallback select an untrusted result?
For troubleshooting, verify what the affected client actually does: inspect its configured proxy mode and policy, determine whether it receives a DHCP PAC URL or probes DNS, check the active suffix search list and the resolution of the WPAD name, and confirm which PAC URL and routing result the application uses. The labels and controls differ by platform, so use documentation for that specific OS, browser, or managed environment rather than assuming a single universal settings path. OPNsense’s WPAD/PAC setup documentation provides illustrative DNS, DHCP, and manual Firefox configuration paths, but those examples are not a substitute for validating the client and network in question.
