How Ferriman described the beginnings of LearnDash

In a March 5, 2015 interview with WisdmLabs, Ferriman said a consulting project in early 2012 required a learning management system. He began looking for LMS options built for WordPress and said he found none. In his account, WordPress seemed suited to the task because it was extendable, flexible, and well supported.

“The more I thought about it, the more it made sense for WordPress to be used as an LMS.”

That is Ferriman’s statement in the 2015 WisdmLabs interview, not a verified quotation from WP-Tonic episode #230.

What LearnDash offers today

LearnDash’s current product page describes it as a WordPress LMS for creating and selling courses. Its listed tools include a course builder, quizzes, certificates, content progression, assignments, and payment integrations. The page names Stripe and PayPal and notes that WooCommerce can be used for a fuller shopping-cart experience. These are current product details, not evidence of what the 2017 interview covered.

The same page lists annual licenses at $199 for one site, $399 for ten sites, and $799 for unlimited sites. Those are vendor-listed prices on the page accessed October 4, 2026; pricing and included features can change, so check the current LearnDash product page before making a purchase decision.

Ferriman’s separate advice on course costs

In a LearnDash article dated May 8, 2017, Ferriman advised people planning a course business to begin with essential functionality and add features as the business grows. He framed costs as dependent on the project’s needs and said WordPress course sellers could control the offering’s look, feel, and policies.

“If you are currently attempting to map out the costs for your own project then I would recommend starting off with the ‘must have’ functionality first and then adding more features over time as you generate more business.”

This recommendation comes from Ferriman’s LearnDash post, “The Cost of Selling Online Courses Using WordPress,” not from a verified transcript of the WP-Tonic episode.
