Its free edition documents authenticator-app codes, email codes and single-use backup codes; administrators can use a setup wizard to choose who must enroll and when enforcement begins. It is a practical option when you want login policies and recovery paths managed inside WordPress, but you should verify compatibility with your login flow and prepare for lockouts before requiring 2FA site-wide.
What WP 2FA does
WP 2FA is a WordPress plugin from Melapress, distributed through the WordPress.org Plugin Directory. It adds a second verification step to supported logins and lets administrators make 2FA mandatory for all users, selected users or roles, or leave it optional. The WordPress.org listing describes the software as free and open source; it also lists passkeys, backup codes, policy controls and REST API endpoints.

That range of controls makes WP 2FA more than a switch to turn on. The meaningful evaluation is whether users can enroll in the methods you allow, whether the policy fits your site’s roles and login routes, and whether administrators can recover access if a factor becomes unavailable.
Which authentication methods are available?
| Method | Availability described by publisher | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Authenticator-app codes (TOTP) | Listed for the free edition by WordPress.org and in Melapress’s setup guide. | An authenticator app generates codes on the user’s device, so sign-in does not depend on the site’s outgoing email delivery. |
| Email codes | Listed for the free edition by WordPress.org and in Melapress’s setup guide. | Check that messages reliably reach users before making email their only available factor. |
| Backup codes | Listed by WordPress.org; the setup guide describes them as a backup method. | These are single-use recovery credentials. Users should store them somewhere accessible but protected. |
| Passkeys | Listed by WordPress.org; Melapress describes passkeys as passwordless sign-ins using cryptographic keys stored on a device and unlocked by biometrics or a PIN. | Confirm the feature and enrollment experience meet your site’s needs. The publisher’s description is not a guarantee covering every device or login flow. |
| Hardware security keys, SMS, email links, trusted devices and additional options | Melapress lists these among paid features; its hardware-key material names YubiKey. | Check the current edition comparison for the specific method and controls you need. A physical security key is optional, paid-edition functionality, not a requirement for using WP 2FA. |
Melapress characterizes hardware keys as phishing-resistant. That description applies to the key-based method, not as a blanket security guarantee for the plugin or its other authentication methods. Feature groupings may differ between vendor pages, so use the live Melapress feature page to confirm availability before choosing an edition.

How setup and enforcement work
Melapress’s Getting started with the WP 2FA plugin guide, updated 14 July 2026, describes a wizard-led activation process. Administrators select allowed authentication methods, backup methods, the users or roles covered by the policy, exclusions and a grace period. When enforcement applies, affected users are prompted to enroll at their next login.
- Choose the methods. Allow the primary methods users can complete, and configure a backup method where appropriate. If email codes are allowed, first verify that site email delivery works reliably.
- Set the policy scope. Decide whether 2FA is required for everyone, particular users or roles, or optional. Melapress says policies can vary by role; its feature page also describes controls to allow or restrict methods and prevent users from removing or changing 2FA.
- Set a grace period. Give users a defined opportunity to enroll before enforcement takes effect. This is especially useful before applying a requirement to a large group.
- Test enrollment and sign-in. Check the process with representative accounts and the login routes your site actually uses before expanding enforcement.
- Document recovery. Make the backup-code and administrator recovery procedures available to the people who may need them before rollout.
Recovery and lockout planning
WP 2FA’s WordPress.org FAQ describes two administrator recovery routes if someone is locked out: another administrator can reset that user’s 2FA, or an administrator can manually deactivate the plugin, sign in without 2FA, reactivate the plugin and reconfigure it. Treat the second route as an administrative contingency to test in a controlled environment, not as proof that lockouts cannot happen.

Melapress’s setup guide puts the purpose of a backup method plainly: “A backup method acts as a safety net when the primary method is unavailable – for example, if a user loses their phone or email delivery fails.” Backup codes are useful only if users save them securely and can retrieve them when needed; administrators should also know who can perform a reset.

Data handling
The WordPress.org FAQ says the plugin does not send data to Melapress except premium license data. This is the publisher’s statement, not an independent privacy audit.
Support channels
The WordPress.org listing points free users to its support forum and says Premium customers receive one-to-one email support. It directs security-bug reports to the Patchstack Vulnerability Disclosure Program. These are documented channels; the listing does not establish a response-time guarantee or security certification.

Who should consider WP 2FA?
- A good fit to evaluate: WordPress administrators who want role- or user-based enforcement, grace periods and multiple documented recovery options, with basic authenticator-app and email-code methods available in the free edition.
- Check carefully first: Sites relying on custom authentication, multisite, WooCommerce or headless flows. The publisher documents support for these areas, but the specific flow and edition still need to be confirmed on your site.
- Look at paid features only if needed: Consider the paid offering when a required method or control—such as hardware-key authentication, SMS, email links, trusted devices or a WooCommerce-related feature—is essential. Confirm current edition details and pricing with Melapress before purchasing.
WP 2FA is worth evaluating when the value lies in the policy and enrollment workflow as much as the extra login factor. Its documented free methods cover common needs, while paid options address additional methods and controls. A sound rollout depends on testing the actual login flow and recovery procedures, not merely activating the plugin.
