Wowza Video vs OBS for Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: OBS Studio is a local encoder; Wowza Video (formerly Wowza Streaming Cloud) is a cloud transcoding and delivery service. Wowza’s legacy documentation describes looping one hosted MP4 through a transcoder, but a support reply dated July 10, 2025 said scheduled playlists of prerecorded videos sent directly to YouTube were not then available in Wowza Video. That dated answer is not confirmation of the service’s current 2026 capabilities. If you want a simpler cloud service specifically for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo is another option: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

What are you comparing?

“Wowza Streaming Cloud” is legacy branding. Wowza says the service is now called Wowza Video; its support page says existing functionality was retained for current customers alongside additional platform features. The older documentation and support answers relevant to this comparison use different product names, so the distinction matters.

OBS Studio and Wowza Video are not equivalent tools. In Wowza’s documented combined workflow, OBS captures or encodes a source locally and sends it over RTMP; Wowza Video receives, processes, and delivers that stream. OBS can also send a stream directly to YouTube, so the Wowza workflow does not establish that Wowza Video is required for direct OBS-to-YouTube streaming.

Can Wowza Video loop prerecorded video to YouTube?

Wowza’s legacy file-streaming documentation describes looping a single H.264-encoded MP4 using a Wowza Video transcoder. The file must be accessible from a web server or supported cloud storage such as Google Storage or Amazon S3. The transcoder downloads the source after the live stream or transcoder starts; startup and download time vary with transcoder startup, file size, file location, and network conditions. The loop control is an advanced transcoder property and is disabled by default.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That workflow documents a single file, not a playlist of separate recordings scheduled to go out as a YouTube Live broadcast. In a Wowza Community response dated July 10, 2025, Senior Technical Support Engineer Jason Hilton said scheduled or playlist streaming of prerecorded video to platforms such as YouTube did not then exist in Wowza Video. He suggested combining clips into one MP4 as a limited workaround and pointed to Wowza Streaming Engine with a module for playlist support. Because that answer is dated, check Wowza’s current documentation or support before treating it as the service’s status today.

OBS vs Wowza Video: the practical differences

Question OBS Studio Wowza Video
Where does the streaming workflow run? On the computer running OBS; the computer and its network connection must remain available while it sends the stream. In Wowza’s cloud service after a source is sent or a hosted file is configured for a transcoder.
What does Wowza’s documented prerecorded-file loop cover? Available information does not establish OBS’s version-specific media-source loop controls or playlist reliability. A hosted MP4 loop through a transcoder is documented. The documentation does not establish scheduled playlist delivery to YouTube.
How does the documented combined workflow connect them? OBS sends an RTMP source stream to Wowza Video. Wowza Video receives, processes, and delivers the stream.
What operational burden is documented? The local encoder depends on the computer and connection staying available. The source file must be hosted and downloaded; startup and download take time, and the transcoder must be managed and stopped.
What is established about cost? No cost figure for OBS is established in the sources used here. Wowza says a looping transcoder continues running and accruing charges until stopped or scheduled to stop. Current plan pricing is not established here.

The choice depends on the actual job. For a locally operated stream, OBS may be enough if you can keep the computer and connection running and configure the required source workflow. For a cloud-transcoding workflow, Wowza Video can process a hosted single-file loop under the documented legacy method, but do not assume that this is the same as a scheduled playlist delivered to YouTube Live.

How Wowza’s documented single-file loop works

  1. Prepare the source: encode the video as an H.264 MP4 and place it on a web server, Google Storage, or Amazon S3 so Wowza can access it.
  2. Configure the Wowza Video transcoder: set the hosted file as its source and enable the loop option in the advanced transcoder properties. The option is off by default.
  3. Allow startup and download time: Wowza’s legacy documentation recommends allowing at least five minutes before a scheduled start for startup and file download. This is a vendor recommendation, not a guarantee; file size, location, and network conditions affect timing.
  4. Reduce the risk of a cutoff: Wowza recommends adding 10–15 seconds of buffer at the end of the file.
  5. Set a stop time or stop it yourself: enabling loop overrides idle timeout. The transcoder keeps running and accruing charges until you manually stop it or use a schedule to stop it at a specified time.

For the combined OBS-to-Wowza workflow, Wowza’s setup tutorial says to start the Wowza Video live stream first, then start OBS to send the RTMP source. Wowza warns that charges accrue for started live streams even when they are not actively carrying content, and advises stopping the stream when the event ends. That tutorial describes a Wowza processing-and-delivery setup; it is not evidence that you need Wowza to send OBS directly to YouTube.

Choose based on your destination and format

  • One prerecorded file, cloud transcoding: Wowza’s legacy documentation covers a hosted MP4 loop through a transcoder. Confirm the current controls and pricing with Wowza before relying on this workflow.
  • A playlist of separate clips sent to YouTube: the July 10, 2025 support reply said this was not then available in Wowza Video. Its suggested single-file workaround means joining clips into one MP4; the reply pointed to Wowza Streaming Engine with a module for playlist support. Verify current availability before choosing a setup.
  • OBS sending directly to YouTube: this avoids adding Wowza’s cloud processing layer, but the local computer and network must remain available. The available sources do not establish detailed OBS loop or playlist settings, so consult current OBS documentation for the version you use.
  • Uploaded videos running continuously from the cloud on YouTube: StreamNeo is purpose-built for this workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month.

Troubleshooting and operating checks

The Wowza loop starts late

Wowza identifies transcoder startup, file size, file location, and network conditions as factors in startup and download time. Start early enough for the source to be fetched; its five-minute recommendation is a planning allowance, not a guaranteed launch time.

The stream stops before the file loops cleanly

Wowza recommends a 10–15 second end buffer to reduce the risk of premature cutoff. Check that the configured source file is accessible and that the loop option is enabled.

Charges continue after the content appears idle

In Wowza’s documented loop workflow, looping overrides idle timeout, leaving the transcoder running until it is manually stopped or stopped by a schedule. In its OBS-to-Wowza tutorial, Wowza also warns that a started live stream can accrue charges without actively carrying content. Stop the relevant service or stream when it is no longer needed.

A playlist option is missing

The July 2025 support response addressed playlist delivery of prerecorded videos to platforms such as YouTube and said the feature was not then available in Wowza Video. Since the response is dated, ask Wowza about current availability rather than assuming either that the feature remains absent or that it has been added.

YouTube rights and live-stream eligibility

Whichever workflow you use, only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. A cloud service, encoder, or playlist does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, performances, or other copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and policies before scheduling a continuous channel, especially if the content includes third-party material or repeats the same recordings. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist to help review rights issues.
