In the GWM Worlds 2 research preview, a persistent scene description and first frame establish the world; timestamped actions and camera input then guide continuous audio-video generation. It is a research system, not a conventional game engine with deterministic state.
What does WorldPrompt represent?
WorldPrompt separates the lasting setup of a scene from the events that happen in it. That distinction lets a prompt describe more than a one-off video: it provides context intended to persist while actions and viewpoints change over time. Runway introduced the format alongside GWM Worlds 2 in its September 3, 2026 research preview.

Persistent context: the world and its first frame
The persistent context has two parts: a genesis prompt and a first frame. The genesis prompt can establish the scene’s layout, materials, lighting, and ambient sound; describe subjects and their attributes; and set reusable rules such as gravity, collisions, character abilities, or camera perspective. The first frame gives the model a visual starting point for that description.

The event stream contains free-form text actions with start and end timestamps. An action can address a particular subject or the scene as a whole, and actions can overlap. They may describe movement, gestures, object interactions, speech, or sound. Camera control is represented separately as per-frame viewpoint translation and rotation.

Runway’s street-corner example uses a genesis prompt to set a wet urban scene, two characters, and a camera-follow rule. Timed events then describe speech, sweeping leaves, pointing, and walking. Dialogue is therefore represented alongside physical actions, rather than treated as a separate script format.
How does GWM Worlds 2 generate a world over time?
Runway describes GWM Worlds 2 as an autoregressive diffusion audio-video model. Its stated process is to fine-tune a foundational audio-video model on WorldPrompt, then post-train it for autoregressive generation. At each step, generation is conditioned on the genesis prompt and first frame, current text and camera input, and past generated frames held in a sliding cache. Runway also describes its video and audio decoders as causal and cached to speed decoding.

In the preview, Runway specifies continuous 720p video at 24 frames per second and audio at 48,000 Hz. Those are vendor-stated output specifications, not results of independent performance testing. The description and specifications are in Runway’s GWM Worlds 2 announcement.
In a September 25, 2026 Latent Space interview, Runway Principal Research Scientist Robin Kahlow described a sequence of fine-tuning on WorldPrompt, post-training for autoregressive generation, and distillation methods to make generation real time. Runway co-founder and co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis described the shift as generating a frame or a few frames at a time instead of producing a whole clip in one pass. These are the interviewees’ explanations of the approach.

How can people interact with it?
Runway outlines three interaction patterns. They differ mainly in when actions are decided: before generation, between generated segments, or continuously during generation.
| Mode | How it works | Examples Runway gives |
|---|---|---|
| Ahead-of-time event stream | Write a timestamped sequence of events before generation. | Filmmaking and advertising |
| Turn-based segments | Generate a segment, pause for a user decision, then continue. | Visual novels and interactive film |
| Continuous real-time input | Generate while a user acts and steers the experience. | Games and interactive experiences |
Runway’s live demo maps keys and mouse inputs to prepared text actions, such as moving or throwing a ball, and uses mouse movement to steer the camera. Runway says ahead-of-time prompts currently yield better quality because they can describe more of the scene; live interaction has to infer newly visible details from the persistent context and previous frames.

Is it a game engine or a deterministic simulator?
No. WorldPrompt is a prompting and control surface for generated audio and video, not a conventional engine that exposes a structured, authoritative world state. The Latent Space interview reports Kahlow saying GWM Worlds 2 has no structured state: an agent observes the generated video and audio. Runway’s preview likewise says an external real-time harness may be needed to track state and produce actions such as NPC dialogue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat difference matters when evaluating uses such as agent training or simulation. A generated scene may look and sound interactive, but the sources do not establish that it maintains the explicit state, repeatability, or rule enforcement expected of a scripted environment. The interview reports CTO Kamil Sindi discussing synthetic data generation for agents, and Runway presents agent evaluation and training as possible applications—not as demonstrated production capabilities.

What are the current limitations?
Runway labels GWM Worlds 2 a research preview and identifies trade-offs that affect how reliably it can support open-ended interaction:
- Speed versus fidelity: real-time generation currently sacrifices some visual fidelity.
- Rapid camera motion: fast turns can degrade detail, texture, and geometry.
- Long-term memory: the system’s ability to retain details over extended interaction is imperfect.
- Reference inputs: image references are limited to the first frame, apart from continuing from prefilled video or audio.
- Open-ended control: free-form interaction may need external logic to track what has happened and decide which actions to generate.
The Latent Space interview adds discussion of error accumulation and memory or context management. Germanidis characterizes error accumulation as a central challenge for autoregressive models. These constraints mean that the continuous mode is not simply a finished game or simulator that can be handed arbitrary inputs without additional control design.
How does this relate to Runway Game Worlds?
Runway’s Game Worlds announcement from August 21, 2025 described a beta for AI-generated nonlinear narrative experiences, including preset worlds, user-created games, private-by-default custom worlds that could be made public, and Chat Mode and Comic Mode. It framed that product as an experience intended to evolve with general world models. That earlier beta and the separate GWM Worlds 2 research preview announced in September 2026 are related in theme, but they should not be treated as the same product or release. See Runway’s Game Worlds announcement.

What WorldPrompt changes—and what it does not
WorldPrompt gives a generated world a persistent setup plus a timed stream of actions and camera changes. This makes it possible to describe speech, movement, sound, and viewpoint in a shared evolving scene. GWM Worlds 2 applies that format to continuous autoregressive audio-video generation, but its preview status and reported limitations are important: it offers a new way to prompt and interact with generated worlds, not the guarantees of a deterministic, fully stateful game engine.
