Compare the same action on World Chain, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, and Starknet using a current wallet quote, then include the cost of getting funds onto and off the network.
Which Ethereum networks are worth comparing?
Ethereum.org lists Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, and Starknet among popular Ethereum Layer 2 networks. They are reasonable alternatives to investigate, not a ranking by price. World Chain is another option: World describes it as a permissionless, open-source Ethereum L2 and says it is “designed for a community of real humans.” World’s overview explains its positioning; it does not provide a stable, like-for-like price comparison against every alternative.

| Network | Why it is on the shortlist | What to check for your transaction |
|---|---|---|
| World Chain | World ID-linked priority blockspace is a distinguishing feature for eligible users; some World App activity may be sponsored. | Check whether your wallet or app sponsors the specific action, whether your intended asset and app are supported, and the transaction’s current quote. |
| Base | Named by Ethereum.org as a popular L2. | Confirm app and asset support, then compare a current quote for the same action. |
| Arbitrum | Named by Ethereum.org as a popular L2; its bridge is one of Ethereum.org’s examples. | Check the route, destination amount, and fees before bridging, as well as the transaction quote. |
| Optimism | Named by Ethereum.org as a popular L2; its bridge is one of Ethereum.org’s examples. | Check the route, destination amount, and fees before bridging, as well as the transaction quote. |
| zkSync | Named by Ethereum.org as a popular L2. | Compare a current quote; its documented fee model includes L1-dependent costs for data and proof-related work. |
| Starknet | Named by Ethereum.org as a popular L2. | Confirm that your app and asset are supported, then compare a current quote for the same action. |
The candidate list comes from Ethereum.org’s overview of the Ethereum network. Its L2 network explorer shows live average transaction fees, but those changing averages are not a quote for your particular wallet, token, or contract interaction.

What makes World Chain different?
World Chain’s “Priority Blockspace for Humans” (PBH) gives valid World ID proof transactions priority inclusion. The technical description says blocks reserve some capacity for non-PBH transactions, while PBH transactions are ordered by priority fee. This is an inclusion and ordering policy for eligible transactions—not a promise that every user’s transaction is free or will always be faster. See the PBH architecture.

Fees and sponsorship depend on how you use the network. World says World App users generally do not currently pay gas for some app activity because World funds those fees; other transactions may incur fees depending on the platform and chain. World Help Center guidance describes free transfers for verified World Money users and says those transactions complete at twice the speed of transactions on Optimism. That speed comparison is World’s claim in its World Money and migration context, not an independently verified benchmark for all World Chain apps or transaction types. Sponsorship terms can change, and self-sponsored transactions may be required in some situations. Check the current World Help Center migration guidance and the fee details shown for your own transaction.
How to compare fees fairly
- Choose the exact action. Compare the same type and approximate amount of transfer, swap, or app interaction. A simple transfer and a contract interaction do not necessarily require the same amount of computation.
- Get quotes at roughly the same time. Use the wallet or service that would actually submit the transaction on each network. Record the quoted fee, its currency, and the time; treat an explorer’s average as context rather than as your personal quote.
- Check what the fee covers. Ethereum defines gas as a measure of computational work. A transaction fee depends on gas used and cost per gas, so both the operation and network demand matter. A failed transaction can still incur a fee. See Ethereum.org’s gas and fees guide.
- Include any costs to move funds. If the funds are not already on the network, check the bridge or other route’s availability, total fees, and amount received before confirming. Ethereum.org’s bridge guide explains the basic process and uses Arbitrum and Optimism bridges as examples; it does not guarantee that a particular route supports your asset or amount.
- Compare the full route you will use. If you expect to move funds back later, include that route too. A lower destination transaction quote may not mean lower total cost once transfers in and out are counted.
Why can an L2 fee change?
Fees can change with demand and with the work a transaction requires. Rollup costs may also reflect expenses for publishing data to Ethereum and operating the system. These components are not identical across all L2s: for example, ZKsync’s fee documentation says L1 costs for publishing data and proof-related operations can fluctuate. A past quote or an average fee is therefore not a reliable promise of what your next transaction will cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which network should you choose?
- Start with the app and asset. Choose only from networks that support the service and token you need; check support before moving funds.
- Use the fee quote for your actual action. Compare at approximately the same time, and distinguish a wallet’s transaction-specific estimate from an explorer’s average.
- Count access costs. Include bridge or other transfer fees and the amount you will receive, not just the fee for the final transaction.
- Consider World Chain’s specific features only if they apply to you. World ID priority and World App sponsorship may matter to eligible users, but they are not universal fee reductions across wallets and applications.
If you self-custody and need a wallet to bridge assets, a hardware wallet may be one option; it is not required for every user and does not reduce network fees. Confirm that any wallet you choose supports the networks and tokens involved.
