Use five recurring checks—DNS, TCP, TLS, HTTP(S), and repeat or location comparison—to spot changes in what your site’s visitors can observe. The floor card below is a practical workshop aid, not a standardized monitoring framework. A failed probe is a reason to investigate; by itself, it does not prove that your shared host caused the problem.
What the floor card can—and cannot—tell you
A scheduled check observes a specific protocol, target, location, and success rule. It does not test every part of a website. For example, Google Cloud’s public HTTP(S) uptime checks can follow redirects and test response status or required content, but by default they do not load page assets or execute JavaScript. The default configuration also does not include authentication. See Google Cloud’s uptime-check documentation.

That makes a floor card useful for tracking observable changes, not for assigning blame. A timeout, changed DNS answer, or certificate warning can prompt an investigation, but the check alone cannot distinguish a hosting issue from a DNS, network, application, or configuration change.
The five checks to put on the card
For each check, record the target, the rule for success, the observation time, and the result. Keep the same configuration when comparing later results with your baseline; otherwise, a changed target or rule can look like changed site behavior.

| Check | What to record | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| DNS resolution | Whether the hostname resolves and the address or addresses returned. | Why an answer changed or whether the web application is healthy. Uptime.com lists DNS checks among its monitoring types: Uptime.com monitoring documentation. |
| TCP reachability | Whether a connection to the chosen service port succeeds. Google Cloud supports public TCP uptime checks configured with a port: Google Cloud uptime checks. | A successful connection does not show that the application returns a correct page. |
| TLS certificate | Whether the HTTPS certificate validates and when it expires. DigitalOcean documents SSL expiry monitoring for HTTPS checks: DigitalOcean uptime monitoring. | Whether other page features work. Google Cloud notes that invalid certificates can cause checks to fail: Google Cloud uptime checks. |
| HTTP(S) response | A stable public URL or health path, expected status, and—if useful—required response content. | By default, the check does not load assets or execute JavaScript, and it cannot test an authenticated page without an appropriate configuration. |
| Repeat or location comparison | Whether repeated checks over time or checks from different locations produce the same result. | A difference identifies an observation pattern, not its cause. Google Cloud describes multi-location checks; DigitalOcean documents regional latency and a global metric. |
Build the card and baseline in 85 minutes
The 85 minutes are a suggested workshop timebox, not a vendor-defined agenda. Adjust it to your site and monitoring setup. The aim is to leave with five configured observations and a baseline against which future results can be compared.
- Minutes 0–10: choose stable targets. Write down the public hostname, the service port to test, an HTTPS URL that should remain available, and the expected HTTP status or response text. Prefer a simple public path that does not require sign-in.
- Minutes 10–25: record the current DNS answer. Check whether the hostname resolves, note the returned address set, and timestamp the result. Save the observation rather than assuming one answer is permanently correct.
- Minutes 25–40: check TCP and TLS. Test the chosen port for reachability, then inspect HTTPS certificate validity and expiry. Record connection outcome and certificate details separately; they measure different things.
- Minutes 40–55: check the HTTP(S) response. Request the stable URL, record its status, and set a content condition only if there is a reliable phrase or marker to verify. A content rule can detect some wrong responses, but it does not make the check a full browser test.
- Minutes 55–70: compare repetitions or locations. Run the checks again later, or from more than one available location. Record where and when each observation came from so an isolated result can be compared with the others.
- Minutes 70–85: set alert rules and save the baseline. Choose which failures matter, how retries or sensitivity should work, and where alerts should go. Save the initial results and configuration together; future comparisons are only meaningful if you know what was checked.
Choose locations, retries, and alerts deliberately
Multiple locations can help reveal a symptom that appears only from one network or region. The available number is service-specific: Google Cloud requires at least three checkers for a public uptime check, while DigitalOcean documents four selectable regions. These are product configurations, not a universal minimum. Sources: Google Cloud uptime checks and DigitalOcean uptime monitoring.

Alerts are only as useful as their conditions. DigitalOcean documents alerts for downtime, latency thresholds, and SSL expiry; Uptime.com describes sensitivity and retry settings. Decide whether a single missed check should notify you or whether the service should retry first, and set latency thresholds around what your site needs rather than treating every slowdown as an outage. See DigitalOcean uptime monitoring and Uptime.com monitoring documentation.
Before enabling a check, confirm that the target is reachable without authentication from the monitoring service’s checkers. A public uptime check with no authentication cannot verify a private or login-only page as a visitor would see it.

Investigate an alert without jumping to a hosting diagnosis
- Read the exact failure. Separate a DNS lookup failure, refused TCP connection, TLS validation or expiry issue, HTTP status/content mismatch, and a location-specific timeout. They are different observations and call for different follow-up checks.
- Compare with the saved baseline. Check whether DNS answers, target URL, port, status rule, certificate, or monitoring location changed. A changed monitoring configuration can explain a different result without any site change.
- Repeat the observation. Compare another run and, if configured, another location. One result is evidence about that check at that time; it is not enough to establish a persistent failure.
- Use the result to narrow the next question. A DNS change merits checking the intended address; a TLS failure merits inspecting certificate validity and expiry; an HTTP mismatch merits checking the response from the target URL. These are investigation directions, not proof of a shared-host cause.
When an optional ping is useful
ICMP ping can add a basic network-reachability signal, but it is not a substitute for checking DNS, HTTPS, or the page response. Google Cloud supports up to three optional pings per check as a troubleshooting aid, and DigitalOcean documents IPv4 ICMP checks. Ping availability depends on the monitoring service and whether the network permits it. Sources: Google Cloud uptime checks and DigitalOcean uptime monitoring.
If ping is included, treat it as an additional probe or deliberately replace the repeat/location comparison only if that comparison is handled elsewhere. A responding ping does not demonstrate that the website’s HTTP service is working.

Select a monitoring service by the checks you need
Vendor feature descriptions show why it is worth checking fit instead of assuming monitoring products are interchangeable. Google Cloud documents HTTP(S) and TCP public uptime checks, with configuration for status, content, locations, and optional ping. DigitalOcean documents HTTP(S) and ICMP checks, regional latency, SSL expiry monitoring, and alerting. Uptime.com lists DNS and other check types and describes retry and sensitivity settings. These examples do not constitute a full feature comparison or a recommendation.
