Workout headphones that fit your training: how to choose

The best workout headphones depend on how you move. For vigorous training where earbuds must stay put, WIRED names the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 its top wireless workout earbuds and reports that their redesigned ear hooks remained secure during testing. For outdoor runs where hearing your surroundings matters more, Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 uses an open-ear bone-conduction design. These are recommendations reported by the cited publications, not products independently tested for this article.

Choose by workout, not by a single “best” label

Start with the activity that is most likely to expose a poor fit. Earbuds that feel secure while walking may shift during sprints, burpees or jumping jacks. NBC Select highlights secure fit for those movements; WIRED reports that the Powerbeats Pro 2 ear hooks stayed in place in its workout testing.

  • For vigorous indoor training: favor a retention system such as an ear hook, then consider whether a sealed earbud will block too much of the room around you.
  • For outdoor running: decide whether awareness of nearby traffic and people is more important than keeping ambient sound out. Open-ear designs preserve more access to environmental sound.
  • For sweat or rain: compare the product’s stated moisture rating with your conditions. Tom’s Guide recommends at least IPX4 for sweat and a higher rating for outdoor rain; a rating is not a blanket promise of waterproofing.
  • For long sessions: check battery life with noise cancellation enabled, if applicable, and distinguish earbuds’ per-charge runtime from the charging case’s added capacity.

WIRED says its workout picks were assessed across activities including weightlifting, indoor swimming, trail runs, hikes and cycling. Tom’s Guide describes checking fit and moisture protection and comparing battery life with manufacturer specifications. Those are the outlets’ methods; this article did not conduct product tests.

Workout headphone picks by priority

Priority Option What the cited guide reports Trade-off to consider
Secure fit for vigorous workouts Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 WIRED’s top wireless workout earbud pick; ear hooks stayed secure in its testing. The guide reports ANC, IPX4, iOS and Android compatibility, up to 10 hours per charge, eight hours with ANC, and 35 additional hours from the case. IPX4 is the source-reported rating; it does not establish suitability for every degree of rain or exposure. ANC use reduces the stated per-charge runtime.
Outdoor running with more environmental awareness Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 SoundGuys reports open ear canals, IP55 and up to 12 hours of battery life. SoundGuys notes that gym clanging can cut through the music and describes drawbacks for noisy gyms and bench work.
Budget-oriented running with ear hooks Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless RTINGS reports IP55, 9.5 hours of battery life and 3.4 additional charges from the case. RTINGS flags a build concern around the point where the hook attaches.
Fitness features beyond audio Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport SoundGuys reports IPX5 and app-based biometric features, including heart-rate and body-temperature monitoring. Confirm the current model and feature availability with the manufacturer before buying.
Preference for over-ear headphones Nothing Headphone (a) RTINGS reports IP52 and says clamping force helps stability. RTINGS finds that same clamping force makes the headphones less comfortable.
Open fit without bone conduction Bose Ultra Open Earbuds RTINGS says the design leaves the ear canal unobstructed and reports IPX4. RTINGS notes limited low-bass reproduction.

These are editorial recommendations and reported specifications, not a controlled head-to-head test. Product details, availability and specifications can change; confirm current information with the manufacturer before purchase.

What the protection ratings and open designs mean for training

The cited guides report IPX4 for Powerbeats Pro 2 and Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, and IP55 for Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 and Skullcandy Push Active. The sources do not establish that any of these products is waterproof for all exposure. Use the stated rating as one selection factor, alongside the maker’s current care and use guidance, especially if workouts involve heavy rain or substantial sweat.

Open-ear and bone-conduction designs leave the ear canal open, which can make it easier to hear surroundings. That is useful outdoors, but it is not the same as blocking traffic or making a run safe: stay alert and follow local rules. In a noisy gym, outside sound can also compete with the music; SoundGuys specifically notes that gym clanging cuts through the OpenRun Pro 2’s audio.

Check battery claims in context

Battery figures are not directly comparable unless you know what is included. WIRED reports up to 10 hours per charge for Powerbeats Pro 2, or eight hours with ANC enabled, plus 35 additional hours from the case. SoundGuys reports up to 12 hours for OpenRun Pro 2. RTINGS reports 9.5 hours for Skullcandy Push Active and 3.4 additional charges from its case. These are figures as stated by those guides, not results measured for this article; actual runtime can vary with use and settings.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Match retention to movement. If you run intervals, jump or lift, prioritize a fit system designed to resist shifting, and consider whether you can adjust it securely before training.
  2. Choose sealed or open listening. Sealed earbuds can reduce surrounding noise; open-ear designs preserve more environmental sound but may be harder to hear in a noisy gym.
  3. Check the reported moisture rating. Compare the rating with the sweat and weather you expect, and consult the manufacturer for limits and care instructions.
  4. Calculate realistic battery needs. Look for runtime with ANC on or off as relevant, then count case capacity separately.
  5. Consider comfort and phone compatibility. A secure fit that becomes uncomfortable is not a good fit for a long session; check compatibility and current product features before ordering.

How to read “expert tested” recommendations

The sources here are editorial guides, not manufacturer specification sheets. WIRED describes workout testing across indoor and outdoor activities; Tom’s Guide describes evaluating fit and moisture protection and comparing battery life against manufacturer specifications. This article did not independently test headphones or reproduce lab measurements. Treat subjective assessments such as fit and comfort as the named outlet’s findings, and verify current specifications with the maker.
