For most workouts, TechRadar’s 2026 roundup names the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 its top overall pick, citing its secure ear-hook fit and workout-focused features. If you would rather keep your ears open to surrounding sounds, the Bose Sport Open Earbuds offer a different approach. The right choice depends on whether you prefer an in-ear seal or open-ear listening, how each design fits you, and the resistance and battery limits that match your routine.
Which workout headphones should you choose?
Start with the way you want to hear your surroundings. Powerbeats Pro 2 is an in-ear option with flexible hooks designed to help keep the buds secure during movement. Bose Sport Open is designed to sit outside the ear canal, leaving the ears unblocked. These products serve different listening preferences; the available evidence does not establish a direct, same-reviewer head-to-head test.

Why Powerbeats Pro 2 is TechRadar’s overall pick
TechRadar’s current 2026 workout-headphone roundup selects Powerbeats Pro 2 as its top overall choice. Its flexible ear hooks are intended to help keep the in-ear buds in place, and five eartip sizes let listeners try different fits. Those features can be useful for workouts involving repeated movement, but comfort and stability still depend on the shape of your ears.
#1 Best Overall
- BUILT FOR ATHLETES WHO DON'T STOP: After 1,500 hours of testing across athletes of every ear shape and intensity level, Powerbeats Pro 2 delivers a secure-fit earhook that stays locked on — whether you're in a sprint, a heavy lift, or a full class.
- TUNE OUT THE GYM. TUNE INTO YOUR WORKOUT: Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) designed specifically for training environments — filters the noise floor so you can lock on, with Transparency mode to let in what matters when it matters.
- YOUR HEART RATE, RIGHT FROM YOUR EARS: Built-in sensors pulse 100+ times per second for real-time heart rate tracking without a chest strap or watch. Train smarter and keep your hands free. IPX4 rated for sweat and water resistance.
- 45 HOURS. ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE WEEK: Powered by the Apple H2 chip, Powerbeats Pro 2 delivers up to 45 hours of total listening time with the charging case — the first wireless Qi-charging case from Beats. Running low? Fast Fuel means a 5-minute charge gives you 1.5 hours of playback.
- WORKS SEAMLESSLY WITH APPLE AND ANDROID: One-touch pairing, automatic device switching, and hands-free Siri on Apple. Full feature access including Heart Rate Monitoring, customizable controls, and battery widgets on Android via the Beats app for Android.
Beats lists the earbuds as IPX4 rated. Its battery claims vary by listening mode: up to 10 hours from the earbuds and 45 hours total with the case in Adaptive EQ mode, or up to 8 hours and 36 hours total, respectively, with ANC and Transparency enabled. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtime for every listener or workout.
For product specifications, see Beats’ Powerbeats Pro 2 page. TechRadar’s selection is an editorial judgment from its roundup, not a universal result for every ear shape or training style.
When open-ear Bose Sport Open makes more sense
Bose Sport Open uses a cuff-like design that leaves the ear canal unblocked. Bose says the model has no noise cancelling, so it is not the choice for someone seeking to shut out gym noise or focus on audio in a noisy setting. The open design may appeal to people who want to remain more aware of nearby activity while listening.

Bose lists an IP54 rating, up to seven hours of listening per charge and up to 29 hours with the case. These are Bose’s published specifications, not a promise of the same endurance in every use. See Bose’s Sport Open product page and its September 17, 2026 announcement for product details.
What IPX4 and IP54 mean for sweaty workouts
An IP rating is a stated resistance limit, not a waterproof guarantee. Powerbeats Pro 2’s IPX4 rating applies to the earbuds; its case is not water resistant. Apple Support says the earbuds are not waterproof or sweatproof, are not intended for swimming or showering, and should not be charged while wet. Apple also notes that resistance can decline through normal wear. Read Apple’s Beats sweat and water resistance guidance before exposing the earbuds to moisture.
Bose lists Sport Open at IP54, but that rating should not be treated as permission to swim or submerge the product. Neither model is established here as suitable for swimming. After a sweaty session, follow the maker’s care guidance and make sure earbuds and charging contacts are dry before charging.

How to match headphones to your workout
For running and other high-movement sessions
Consider how securely the design sits on your own ears. The Powerbeats Pro 2 hooks are intended to help maintain placement, while its five eartip sizes offer fit options. Try a comfortable tip size and check that the buds stay put during the movements you actually do; no design can guarantee a fit for everyone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor outdoor sessions where awareness matters
An open-ear design such as Bose Sport Open avoids blocking the ear and does not add noise cancelling. That can suit listeners who want to hear more of their surroundings, though it also means less isolation from ambient sound.
For noisy gyms or focused listening
Favor an in-ear design if you want more isolation than an open-ear model provides. The Bose product page explicitly says Sport Open has no noise cancelling. Powerbeats Pro 2 lists ANC and Transparency modes; check the battery claim for the mode you expect to use rather than relying on the longest figure.

- FOR POWERBEATS PRO 2 EXCLUSIVE: Precision-engineered only for Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds. Not compatible with Powerbeats Pro (1st Gen) – guaranteed perfect nozzle lock & seal.
- 5X LONGEVITY: Industry-first 5 PAIRS (XS/S/M/L/XL) – replace lost/worn tips or customize fit for workout/music/calls. Double the standard kit!
- BASS-BOOSTED SEAL: 25% thicker silicone walls vs. stock tips – blocks gym noise while amplifying for the Powerbeats Pro 2’s low-end thump.

- HYPOALLERGENIC COMFORT: Medical-grade silicone prevents itch/redness. Oval-shaped core distributes pressure evenly – wear all day pain-free.
For long sessions away from a charger
Compare battery claims at your intended settings. Powerbeats Pro 2’s published totals differ between Adaptive EQ and ANC/Transparency use, while Bose quotes up to seven hours per charge and up to 29 hours with its case. Actual runtime can vary, so treat all of these as manufacturer estimates.
What to verify before buying
- Fit: Ear shape and comfort matter as much as the retention design. If possible, try the style before committing to long sessions.
- Listening preference: Decide whether you want an in-ear seal or open-ear awareness; the open Bose model does not provide noise cancelling.
- Moisture exposure: Check the rating for the earbuds and the case separately. Do not infer that either product is waterproof or suitable for swimming.
- Battery mode: Match the advertised “up to” figure to the feature settings you plan to use.
- Controls and price: Check the current product listing for the control details and price in your region. Current prices and stock were not established here, and can change.
