If you have respiratory-virus symptoms, stay home and away from others until your symptoms are improving overall and you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine. If you feel well enough to work before then, ask whether remote work is possible rather than going onsite. Once you resume normal activities, take added precautions for five days because you may still spread the virus. These are general U.S. recommendations, not a diagnosis or individualized medical or legal advice.
Should you go to work if you’re sick?
For symptoms caused by a respiratory virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says to stay home and away from others until both of these conditions are met:

- Your symptoms are improving overall.
- You have had no fever for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication.
The guidance applies when another cause does not better explain your symptoms. The CDC’s “Preventing Spread of Respiratory Viruses When You’re Sick” page also advises staying away from others at home if they are not sick.
That threshold is about when to resume normal activities; it does not mean you are certain to be noncontagious. Consider your ability to work, the people you might expose, and your employer’s rules as separate parts of the decision.

How to choose between a sick day, remote work, and onsite work

Feeling able to work is not the same as being well enough to work productively. If you cannot concentrate, safely perform your duties, or get through the workday without worsening how you feel, taking leave is a practical choice. This is a decision aid, not a CDC-defined fitness test.
When are you no longer contagious?
There is no single point in this guidance at which everyone can be considered noncontagious. CDC says people may continue to spread a respiratory virus after they feel better. For five days after returning to normal activities, take added precautions to reduce the chance of passing it on.

- Consider wearing a well-fitting mask around other people.
- Use other available precautions, such as cleaner air, distancing, hygiene, or testing when relevant to your circumstances.
- Be especially thoughtful about contact with people who may be at higher risk of severe illness.
These are precautions for after you meet the stay-home threshold; they are not substitutes for staying home while your symptoms are not improving overall or you still have a fever.
What workplace attendance research can—and cannot—tell you
A CDC-published observational study in Emerging Infectious Diseases followed about 8,000 participants over a four-year period spanning prepandemic and pandemic periods. Among participants with COVID-19, 51.2% reported working onsite on illness day 1, 22.3% on day 2, and 14.1% on day 3. Those figures describe that study’s participants and period; they are not estimates of how often people currently work onsite while sick.

The study also found that, compared with workers whose experience was onsite-only, workers with hybrid experience had lower adjusted odds of working onsite on illness day 3: 0.38 (95% confidence interval 0.29–0.49) during the pandemic period and 0.69 (0.54–0.87) during prepandemic influenza seasons. These are comparative study results, not absolute risks. They describe attendance patterns and do not show that working while sick is advisable or speeds recovery. Check leave rules and job-specific guidance
Leave rights vary with location, employer, contract, and eligibility. A CDC summary of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) describes unpaid, job-protected leave for eligible workers of covered employers for specified reasons; it does not mean every worker qualifies. The CDC’s healthcare personnel guidance summarizes that federal framework, but it does not determine your individual rights. Check your employer’s policy and the rules that apply where you work.

Work in a healthcare setting may be covered by separate infection-control guidance, so do not assume the general public return criteria automatically govern clinical work. CDC recommends that employers provide paid time off and flexible leave and telework policies to support workers staying home when sick or caring for sick family members; this is a public-health recommendation, not a universal legal requirement. When to contact a healthcare provider
Contact a healthcare provider if you are at higher risk of flu complications, feel very sick, or are worried about your illness. CDC says antiviral treatment for people at higher risk from flu complications provides the greatest benefit when started within two days of symptom onset, so seek advice promptly if flu may be involved.
