A working Apple-1 with a Wozniak-signed motherboard is being offered in Bonhams’ History of Science, Technology & Computing online sale, scheduled to close October 14, 2026. Bonhams estimates the Hatfield machine, Registry No. 48, at $500,000–$800,000; that is a pre-sale estimate, not a final price. The lot also includes its original cassette interface and a 1978 letter signed “Steven Jobs” declining a proposed trade-in.
What is the Hatfield Apple-1 auction?
Bonhams lists the computer as Apple-1 Registry No. 48 and identifies Fred Hatfield as its original owner. The auction house describes it as fully functional and says Steve Wozniak signed the motherboard. Its online History of Science, Technology & Computing sale runs October 4–14, 2026. As of October 7, the scheduled close is still ahead, so no final sale price is established here. Bonhams’ September 2, 2026 announcement gives the estimate as $500,000–$800,000.

What comes with the computer?
The lot description lists a 1976 Apple Computer 1 motherboard built around a MOS Technology 6502 processor, with a keyboard interface and connector, three original Sprague “Big Blue” capacitors, 8KB RAM, an expansion connector, a cassette-board connector, and the original Apple cassette interface board. Manuals, a preliminary Apple BASIC guide, and an invitation to the Apple-1 Owners Club are also included. Bonhams’ lot description identifies these items as part of the offering.

The accompanying letter is dated January 18, 1978, and signed “Steven Jobs,” identified at the time as Apple’s Vice President, Operations. It authorized an exchange of Hatfield’s Apple-1 for an Apple II 4K board; Hatfield declined. Along with Wozniak’s signature on the motherboard, the letter gives the lot provenance tied to both Apple co-founders.

- Used Book in Good Condition
It is a historic board, not necessarily a complete desktop setup
The Apple-1 was sold as a bare board, so buyers supplied items such as a case, power supply, keyboard, and display. The available lot description establishes the motherboard and listed accessories, but does not establish that a complete modern desktop setup is included. A buyer should rely on the auction’s current lot inventory for the precise contents.
How rare is this Apple-1?
Bonhams describes the Hatfield machine as one of fewer than 75 verified Apple-1 computers known to survive, with an even smaller number still operational. That is the auction house’s attributed count, not an independently established census. The registry number given for this example is 48.
The reported working condition, original cassette interface, Wozniak signature, and Jobs trade-in letter are distinct aspects of this lot’s appeal. Bonhams’ Ian Ehling, Director of Fine Books & Manuscripts, North America, called the Hatfield example “among the most compelling surviving examples.” That is the auction representative’s assessment, not an independent grading.

How does the estimate compare with reported past prices?
The current $500,000–$800,000 figure is Bonhams’ estimate for this auction, not a realized price. Notebookcheck’s October 6, 2026 report says this board sold in Cologne in 2013 for $671,400 after repair, and reports that working Apple-1 computers have previously exceeded $900,000 at auction. Those are historical figures reported by a secondary source; they do not establish what this sale will bring. The same report gives $666.66 as the Apple-1’s launch price, without citing an original 1976 price document. Notebookcheck’s October 6 report provides that historical context.

When does the auction close?
