That can add monitoring, judgment and accountability, but the available evidence does not establish that workers generally do this work without manager-level pay. Whether a particular job has changed—and whether its pay reflects the change—depends on the duties, authority and compensation at that workplace.
What does it mean for a worker to manage an AI bot?
In this context, it usually means a worker oversees an AI system while it performs part of a job: watching its work, checking outputs, stepping in when something goes wrong, or deciding whether its recommendations can be used. That is different from an algorithm managing people by monitoring, directing or rating their work.

The distinction matters. A worker supervising a customer-service bot is overseeing a tool. A worker whose schedule or performance is controlled by an algorithm is subject to algorithmic management. The OECD’s 2025 report, Algorithmic Management in the Workplace, addresses the latter as well as questions of responsibility and worker recourse.

From doing the task to supervising it
MIT’s Industrial Performance Center report Humans in the Loop: The AI Workforce and the Future of Work (2026) describes a shift in studied generative-AI implementations: “Across applications of generative AI, the role for the human worker shifted away from executing a task and toward supervising a task.” It gives customer service as an example, where a worker may oversee a bot’s interaction with a customer.

That observation does not mean every AI rollout changes a job in the same way. Nor does the label “human in the loop” tell a worker how much review time is expected, whether they can stop or override the system, or who is answerable when it makes a consequential mistake.
Does supervising AI automatically make someone a manager?
No. Checking or correcting an AI output is not, by itself, proof that a worker has taken on a manager’s role. The meaningful questions are what decisions the worker controls, what authority they have, and what responsibility the employer assigns—not whether the job description uses phrases such as “AI supervisor” or “human oversight.”
The OECD recommends that organizations make responsibility for algorithmic recommendations and decisions clear, particularly when workers’ rights, safety or opportunities are affected. It also recommends routes for workers to seek explanations, review and redress. In practical terms, an employer’s oversight arrangement should specify who sets goals, who makes the final decision, who can intervene, and who handles an error.

What to establish about a job’s actual duties
- Authority: Can the worker pause, correct or override the system, or are they expected only to accept its output?
- Time and workload: Is review time included in the workload, and how is the volume of bot-generated work monitored?
- Accountability: Who is responsible for errors, customer complaints or safety consequences?
- Preparation and evaluation: What training is provided, and how is the worker’s performance judged?
- Recognition: Have the job description, classification, pay or credit for the work changed?
- Worker protections: What privacy safeguards and channels for explanation, review or challenge apply?
These questions help distinguish a limited quality-checking duty from a substantial change in responsibility. The reviewed studies do not establish how particular employers have changed job descriptions or pay, so those points need to be checked at the workplace in question.
What does the pay research actually show?
One 2025 preprint, Experimental Evidence That AI-Managed Workers Tolerate Lower Pay Without Demotivation, reports an experiment with 382 participants. In its AI-manager condition, the authors report a 40% wage reduction. That is a result under the study’s specific experimental design; it is not an estimate of how often employers cut real workers’ wages, nor evidence that workers supervising AI agents routinely receive less pay.
A separate paper, People Reduce Workers’ Compensation for Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), studies a different question: whether people pay workers less when those workers use AI. Its reported studies include a real-pay gig-worker study, and the authors say perceived credit and contractual constraints mattered. This finding concerns compensation for using AI, not compensation for overseeing AI systems. The two studies should not be treated as evidence for the same claim.

So the evidence supports a live question about how work and compensation may change, but it does not settle whether AI oversight is commonly unpaid, whether it qualifies as management, or how prevalent any pay gap is. Those claims require evidence about named jobs and employers, including the duties assigned and the pay before and after the change.

Yes, at least in the perceptions measured by one study. In a preregistered vignette experiment with 2,172 Dutch adults, Milena Nikolova’s 2026 IZA Discussion Paper No. 18782, Let Me Check on You: Job Quality Under AI and Human Oversight, compared human, AI-only and hybrid workplace safety oversight. AI-only and hybrid systems reduced perceived job satisfaction, meaningfulness and social value relative to human supervision; perceived fair wages changed little.
This was a vignette experiment about perceived job quality, not a measurement of workers’ pay or satisfaction across workplaces. It nevertheless shows why compensation is not the only relevant question: added monitoring can affect how autonomous, meaningful or socially valued work feels, even when respondents’ perceptions of fair wages change little.

What do current employment findings say about wider job risk?
Stanford Digital Economy Lab researchers Erik Brynjolfsson, Bharat Chandar and Ruyu Chen analyzed ADP payroll data through June 2026 in their report, revised August 12, 2026, Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts about the Recent Employment Effects of Artificial Intelligence. They found no evidence of widespread economy-wide displacement in those data, while reporting that employment for workers aged 22–25 in AI-exposed occupations was 19% below the comparison counterfactual.
The 19% figure is a relative employment comparison for that age group and set of occupations, not a count of jobs eliminated by AI. The analysis concerns employment trends; it does not measure whether workers assigned to supervise AI receive manager pay. It therefore cannot resolve the pay question in this article.

What should workers and employers compare?
For a specific role, compare the job before and after AI is introduced, rather than relying on the phrase “human in the loop.” A useful assessment records the tasks added or removed, the time spent reviewing outputs, the consequences of errors, and the worker’s ability to make a different decision from the system.
For workers, that record can make a conversation about workload, training, performance expectations, classification and pay more concrete. For employers, it clarifies whether oversight is meaningful or merely nominal, and whether people have the authority and support needed to do it responsibly. A role that gains substantial judgment or accountability deserves a direct evaluation of those changed duties; the research cited here does not prescribe a particular job title or pay rate.
