Workday Job API Returns Zero for 100? How to Check and Paginate

A zero-length Workday jobs response is not proof that an employer has no openings. Compare a 20-job request, inspect the response, and validate offset pagination for the specific board.

A request for 100 Workday career-site jobs has reportedly returned HTTP 200 with an empty jobPostings array, even though the same board returned jobs when queried for 20. That is a reported behavior, not a universal Workday rule: another technical report describes an HTTP 400 for requests above 20. Check the specific board’s response before treating an empty page as evidence that the employer has no openings.

What the empty response does—and does not—tell you

Juan Carlos Gutierrez reports that his request with limit: 100 received HTTP 200 and a well-formed response whose jobPostings array was empty; using limit: 20 against the same endpoint returned postings. He characterized that tested response as having no error or warning. A separate DEV Community report also describes an empty array above 20 and says the response’s total may remain populated. These are observations from individual technical articles, not a published contract for every Workday-powered board.

The behavior is not consistent across the reports. FetchSmith says its tests above 20 produced an HTTP 400 error instead. Therefore, neither an empty HTTP 200 nor an HTTP 400 should be assumed to be the universal response to a large page-size request. The sources do not establish how frequently either behavior occurs across employers’ boards.

An empty jobPostings array by itself means only that the response contains no postings for that request. It does not prove that the employer has no openings. Compare a smaller request for the same board and inspect the full response, including total where present.

How the reported career-site request is structured

Third-party technical articles describe a board-specific POST endpoint in this general form:

https://<host>/wday/cxs/<tenant>/<site>/jobs

The host or shard, tenant, and site are specific to the career board; do not assume that values from one employer work for another. The reports describe JSON request properties including appliedFacets, limit, offset, and searchText. This is a public career-site interface described by third parties, not evidence of a universal, officially documented public API contract.

Choosing a page size: one large request or smaller pages

Approach What the reports indicate Practical implication
Request 100 postings at once Gutierrez reports HTTP 200 with an empty array; FetchSmith reports HTTP 400 for requests above 20. These are conflicting observations, not a guaranteed response for every board. Fewer requests if it works, but an empty result or error can make a naive client misread the board. Verify the response against that board before relying on this size.
Request 20 and paginate with offsets Technical articles report receiving postings with a page size of 20 and describe offset pagination as a workaround. The number 20 is reported behavior, not an official universal limit. Requires multiple requests for more results, but lets the client retrieve and inspect pages incrementally. Validate offsets and response fields on the target board.

How to diagnose and paginate safely

  1. Capture the whole response. Record the HTTP status and inspect the response body, especially jobPostings and total. A successful status alone does not establish that the requested page contains results.
  2. Repeat the request for the same board with limit: 20. Keep the host, tenant, site, search text, and applied facets the same so the page-size change is the meaningful difference. Compare the returned postings and status.
  3. If the smaller request returns jobs, try offset-based pages. Request successive offsets with a page size of 20, for example offsets 0, 20, and 40, and collect the returned postings. This sequence is implementation guidance reported by technical sources, not a guarantee that every board uses identical pagination behavior.
  4. Save the first response’s total when it is populated. FetchSmith reports that later responses may show total as zero. Treat the first value as a useful observed count, not an authoritative invariant, and validate how the target board behaves.
  5. Decide whether the board is empty only after checking the request context. Confirm that the board-specific path and request parameters are correct, and distinguish a truly empty result from a page-size response that the endpoint handles unexpectedly.

Why Workday’s WQL pagination documentation is not the same thing

Workday’s Administrator Guide documents limit and offset pagination for WQL query results, and says a WQL query cache returns at most 10,000 rows. That documentation concerns WQL, not the public career-site CXS jobs endpoint, so its limits cannot be applied to career-board requests. See Workday’s WQL pagination guide.
