The proposed server mediation could help track who made each change, apply permission checks, and surface conflicts—but the work is still experimental, has no selected engine, and is not ready for WordPress Core.
What is changing
The new proposal makes WordPress the intermediary for collaborative edits. “Collaboration should be server-aware, with WordPress Core in control,” proposal author Chris Zarate wrote in the September 18, 2026 Core post.
In the earlier browser-based experiment, each editor held a copy of the post as a CRDT document and exchanged updates with other browsers. Those changes remained in browser memory until a collaborator saved. The server-aware design instead has collaborators send updates to WordPress, which can record who made them, check that user’s authorization, merge and store them, and send each collaborator updates they have not received. If an update cannot be merged cleanly, the system could raise a conflict for review.
Why contributors are revisiting the design
Attribution and permissions
With browser-to-browser editing, WordPress could not reliably identify the author of every change. That matters when collaborators have different privileges: the proposal describes the risk of a contributor adding a script tag while an administrator edits elsewhere, then the administrator saving content that includes the contributor’s change. Server mediation is intended to preserve attribution and check the permissions of the person making each edit.

Edits from outside the browser
Changes made through the REST API or WP-CLI did not fit cleanly into the browser peer exchange. An integration or scheduled task could update a post while someone had it open in the editor, potentially overwriting work. Making WordPress the point through which updates pass is intended to let those server-side changes participate in the same collaboration model.
Disconnected or overlapping work
If a connection drops or collaborators edit overlapping content, browser copies can drift apart. A server-mediated design gives WordPress a place to coordinate updates and, when automatic merging is not clean, ask a collaborator to review a conflict rather than silently treating every change as compatible.

Three experimental sync engines are being compared
The project is comparing three ways to combine edits. These are candidates, not a ranking; the proposal does not select a preferred engine.
| Candidate | How it works | When updates sync |
|---|---|---|
| Yjs-server | A PHP implementation of Yjs. The server maintains a shared CRDT document, merges updates, and shares the document with clients. | Updates are merged as they are exchanged; the proposal does not state a fixed interval. |
| Distributed Editing (DE-RTC) | Uses a three-way merge of the latest saved version, the editor’s proposed version, and the base version the editor started from. | On save or autosave, rather than on every keystroke. |
| Intent log | An operational-transform approach: the editor sends descriptions of changes, such as moving a block, and the server maintains an ordered log that clients can replay. Genuine conflicts can be left for review. | Clients replay ordered operations; the proposal does not state a fixed interval. |
The Gutenberg Sync Engines repository distinguishes a sync engine, which determines how edits are combined, from a transport, which determines how updates travel between the editor and WordPress. The plugin makes both selectable so candidates can be compared on the same site under the same conditions. Its stated role is a “decision tool, not a solution.”

Performance is a key open question for hosts
Server mediation makes the host’s resources and update transport important parts of the evaluation. The proposal says frequent polling adds cost and is less realistic for effective collaboration on lower-resource hosts. It suggests improving collaboration when peers exchange updates less often, while allowing alternative transports for hosts prepared to invest more resources.
The official proposal and hosting request publish no benchmark results or quantified resource cost for the new candidates. There is no established minimum hosting tier or demonstrated performance winner. The September 24, 2026 Hosting team request asks providers and hosting teams to test in different server environments and share feedback with supporting data. Useful comparisons would therefore document workload, allocated resources, and transport—not assume a particular configuration will perform well.

What happened to the earlier WordPress 7.0 effort?
The browser-based RTC implementation was removed from WordPress 7.0 before release; it did not ship as a WordPress 7.0 feature. A May 2026 WordPress developer update cited the broad feature surface, race conditions, server load, memory efficiency, and recurring bugs uncovered through fuzz testing. It said collaboration work would continue toward a future release.
That history explains why the architecture is being reconsidered, but it should not be conflated with the new candidates. Earlier 2026 updates discussed Yjs data stored in post metadata and HTTP polling, including a post-meta approach that disabled persistent post-query caches while an editor was open. Those were details of the previous implementation, not published specifications or measurements for this server-aware exploration (April 2026 developer update).

How to take part—and what the status means
The September proposal says the exploration is in its early stages and “not ready for Core inclusion today.” The planned next step is to choose a preferred engine and package it as a feature plugin for wider testing. The current hosting outreach asks hosts to test and provide feedback, especially performance data; it is not an announcement of general availability.
WordPress Test previously framed the user goal as collaborating on posts “the way you do in Google Docs,” but that is an aspiration rather than a description of a current WordPress Core capability (March 11, 2026 testing post). For now, developers, editors, and hosts should treat the work as an architectural experiment, with engine choice, transport, conflict handling, and server cost still under evaluation.
